Hey all,

Here is another upcoming SUV...very luxurious and capable! It also costs about $72,000!

The new Range Rover has something that is pretty cool to have on our CRV. It has independent suspension all around with air bladders. These bladders are cross-linked. Therefore, if one wheel is up on a rock, the system will force air from that bladder to go to the OTHER side, thus, pushing down the other wheel. This is very helpful in off-roading because you increase wheel articulation.

2003 Range Rover Review

Leader of the pack. Again.

"I have GOT to get me one of THESE!" (Will Smith, "Independence Day"). This sentiment, referring to the thrill of piloting a spaceship, is just what we felt after spending 10 hours behind the wheel of the New Range Rover.

We wondered how New Range Rover was going to be introduced to the participants. After all Freelander's introduction was a big splash, literally: a crate was dropped from a helicopter into Lake Las Vegas, and out of the water came Land Rover's newest child. Anticipation built after dinner as we were led around the hotel's lawns past candlelit earlier reincarnations of Range Rover. Our stroll ended in the hotel ballroom, transformed for the occasion into a sumptuously decorated 'drawing room' in which the BBC could easily have filmed a period drama.

Not waiting for an invitation, the assembled audience stampeded to examine Solihull's latest. This was the first time most had laid eyes on the New Range Rover. They crawled under the vehicle, sat in the front, in the back, even in the cargo area. They looked under the bonnet, they slammed doors, and even kicked the tires! This was a tough crowd with more than one skeptic. What no frame? No beam axles, etc?

If the evening had been all about pageantry and image, the technical sessions in day two revealed the "real" New Range Rover through a series of classes that dissected the vehicle. By the end of the day heads were spinning with the sheer volume of information, but everyone was impressed with the technical sophistication of the vehicle and the attention to detail.

The 5:30 A.M. wake-up call on day 3 was tough but this was the day we had all been waiting for. We would finally get to drive the New Range Rover. Bob Burns, LRNA off road driving guru had put together a 10 hour driving tour of the mountains of Southern California that would take us from sea level to over 7,000 feet and back to sea level. The tour promised winding mountain roads and spectacular off roading.

Americans are obsessed with size, and during the technical sessions there had been a few grumbles about the smaller Range Rover motor. But it only took a turn at the wheel to convince our group of skeptics that size isn't everything. The 4.4L engine moves the heavier Range Rover quicker and smoother than the old 4.6L ever did. Don't get me wrong, the New Range Rover is no Vanquish. Wait, now there's an idea _ how about the Aston Martin V-12 as an optional engine

As the first twists in the road neared we decided to give the transmission a workout. A quick flick of the wrist and we downshifted a notch, engine braking nicely scrubbing excess speed as we entered the turn. Passing the apex of the turn, we pushed the throttle and the vehicle responded instantly. Revved it up a bit, another quick wrist movement and we were cruising in top gear. The transmission was crisp and responsive, but more importantly it was FUN! Up and down we worked the tranny as we twisted, turned and climbed the Santa Ynez Mountains.

The Range Rover's road manners were indeed very impressive, taking with ease the tight mountain curves at over twice the recommended speeds with nary a lean nor a wobble. I can attest to the fact that even at 110 mph on the straights, the ride was smooth as silk. But we had expected excellent road manners from a vehicle developed in part by BMW. It was the off road capability we were worried about, we wanted proof that the New Range Rover wasn't just a larger X-5!

Burns' off road foray didn't pull any punches. Within 100 meters of the end of the pavement, a 3 foot high boulder appeared to block the trail. Jaws dropped as the Range Rover smoothly climbed the boulder and with a tire a good 2 feet off the ground easily moved forward! The traction control system works without appreciable wheel spin. This system is the closest we've seen to having differential lockers front and rear.

The trail didn't get any easier. The steepness of the terrain we were ascending more than once made us feel we were astronauts at blast off, with nothing but sky visible through the windscreen. Thank goodness for Burns' team of instructors spotting us through the tighter bits. Mile after mile the convoy of 20 Range Rovers climbed boulders, rock ledges, ditches and ravines; negotiated steep loose hill climbs and descents; and maneuvered around tight obstacles, all with complete aplomb. The vehicle truly dwarfed the terrain.

The air suspension blocked out all but the largest bumps and together with the independent suspension allowed the vehicle to gently crawl over rock ledges keeping all four tires flat on the ground. Without beam axles, underbody ground clearance is awesome, allowing one to simply drive over rocks that would otherwise need to be moved. And surprisingly, although the vehicle is bigger all around than its predecessor, it is more maneuverable, having a tighter turning radius, and generally feeling much more nimble. The New Range Rover definitely isn't an overgrown X-5!

If no beam axles, no frame, and independent suspension means a vehicle that so effortlessly handles tough off road conditions, I can't wait until the Discovery and Defender get the same treatment.

Range Rover's Cross-Link Air Suspension

Engines are electronically controlled; automatic and some manual transmissions are also electronically controlled; and ABS braking and traction control must use computers to provide the quick reaction times necessary for these systems to work. Suspension control is the next area of the automobile where we can expect to see big changes in the near future.

Electronic suspension control is not new. Relatively simple yet expensive systems have been available on luxury cars and SUV's for a few years. Now however, faster computers and innovative design are creating systems that provide superb ride, excellent handling, and off-road capability too! One of the newest systems on the road is Land Rover's Cross-Link Suspension system found on the 2003 Range Rover. With a price tag at over $100,000, only a select few drivers will be in a position to drive this luxury SUV, but expect to see this technology filter down into other new vehicles. Here is how it works.

The four-wheel independent suspension on the Range Rover uses a computer-controlled compressor and air springs on each corner of the vehicle. The computer enables the suspension to automatically alternate between stiff on-road driving and soft off-road driving. There are four modes of operation, with three of these modes selectable by the driver using a dashboard switch.

The first mode is standard ride height. The driver can inhibit automatic height changes if desired, and if a trailer is connected, no other settings are available. The next selectable mode is Access Ride Height. In this mode, the Range Rover lowers 40 mm to provide easier entry, exit, and loading. A button on the driver's door can also be used to select this height, or the system can be set to automatically lower when the vehicle slows to less than 15 mph. Increase speeds to greater than 18 mph and the ride automatically changes to standard ride height.

Motorway Ride Height is the only non-selectable mode. When the vehicle exceeds 100 kph for more than 30 seconds, the computer lowers the vehicle 20 mm for improved high speed handling. The vehicle will return to standard height if the vehicle speed drops below 69 kph for more than one minute.

The fourth and final mode is the most interesting: Off-Road Ride Height. This mode is driver selectable at vehicle speeds less than 50 kph and automatically returns to normal ride height at speeds greater than 50 kph. In Off-road mode, the front of the Range Rover is raised 60 mm and the rear raised 50 mm. Off-road mode also enables the Cross-link system to activate.

The Cross-link system looks deceptively simple. The front air springs are connected together with an air line and the rear air springs are also connected together. A computer-controlled valve for each axle allows air to move from one side of the vehicle to the other as the wheels move up and down. As a wheel on one side of the vehicle is forced up by the terrain, the air is allowed over to the other side, pushing the other wheel down. This improves traction on the unloaded wheel. It also keeps the Range Rover relatively level so passenger comfort is far superior to vehicles without the system.

Using ride height sensors at each wheel, the computer can control air to each air spring so that during off-road driving the front wheels have 175 mm bump (upward) travel and 95 mm rebound (downward) travel. This is very different from the 115 mm bump and 155 mm rebound travel used for on-road driving. Rear suspension travel changes similarly, with much greater bump travel and less rebound travel for off-road use and less bump travel and more rebound travel for on-road motoring.

Many vehicles have used air-springs, with their compressors and ride-height sensors in the past. Range Rover's addition of sophisticated computer programming and Cross-Link air lines and control valves enable this SUV to offer luxury car ride on the highway, with stable, almost sports car like handling, yet still make it a tough, go-anywhere off-road vehicle. Just hearing about this suspension system, I must admit I had my doubts. After driving the Range Rover both on the highway and over very tough off-road routes, I am impressed at how such simple designs can make such a huge improvement.

2003 All-Star Large Sport-Utility: Land Rover Range Rover

There have been luxurious sport-utility vehicles before, but the Land Rover Range Rover is the first SUV that represents a true alternative to a luxury sedan. It's not just that the Range Rover wafts down the road or that it rides with aplomb or that it has a beautiful interior. The Range Rover makes the same kind of grand, sweeping statement as a Mercedes-Benz S-class or a Bentley. Honed by BMW, Land Rover's previous master, the Range Rover is as triumphant off-road as you might expect, and its on-road poise is compromised only slightly by the 4.4-liter V-8's limited grunt. Of course, had BMW held on to Land Rover, the Range Rover eventually might have employed a 400-horsepower-plus V-12, which would have made for an even more amazing vehicle. As it is, we likely will savor this Range Rover as the best of its breed, because it's difficult to imagine that Ford's financially troubled Premier Automotive Group has the resources to repeat BMW's feat. It would be nice to be proved wrong, but sharing components with Ford just doesn't have the same ring as commonality with BMW.

In short, the new Range Rover lives up to its reputation as the standard to which other SUVs aspire. It is a pleasure to drive and it's easy on the eyes. For many, it truly is the SUV heavyweight world champion.

The 2003 Range Rover carries a window sticker reading $69,330--before options, tax, title and plates.

Hard to comprehend why anyone would spend $70,000 for a vehicle designed to bounce over jagged boulders, climb mud-spattered hills, shoulder its way through forests and then, after a quick bath to remove the grime and expose the scrapes and scratches, carry Mom and Dad to dinner and the theater.

Spokesman Bill Baker says 70 percent of Range Rover owners report they take the machine off-road.

"Of course, they might mean they've driven on a gravel road, but 30 percent do say they regularly take it to a national park or the back country or the beach and 7 percent say they are hard-core off-road hobbyists," he said.

Folks who need to be medicated when the first scratch appears on their $15,000 Chevrolet Cavalier can't comprehend the beating other folks will give a $70,000 Range Rover.

Of course, those who don't comprehend can't afford a $70,000 sport-ute, especially one that gets only 12 m.p.g. in city and 17 m.p.g. in highway driving on smooth, flat pavement in clear, dry weather thanks to its size, weight (5,400 pounds) and full-time all-wheel-drive.

But, of course, while some purchase a Range Rover out of a sense of adventure, others acquire one for the image as evidenced by the fact the typical buyer profile shows the average age at 43 and average income at $300,000, and the owner typically has two or more homes and three or more cars--none of which is a Cavalier.

Regardless of who buys and where they take it, it would be difficult to imagine anyone handing over $70,000 after falling in love with Range Rover's fashionable styling.

The '03 Range Rover, only the third remake of the machine in 32 years, sports a 5-inch stretch to the wheelbase, as well as more than an inch added in height and width and 5 inches added to overall length.

Yet it still looks like a Range Rover, a box on wheels that stands rather tall to provide clearance to traverse boulders, hills, fallen trees, swamps, streams, sand dunes and, if needed, Cavaliers.

One of the problems of standing tall is that it raises the center of gravity. So when you get behind the wheel of a Range Rover and take a turn at speed, you'll get a quick education in the laws of physics as they pertain to body lean that neither high-school teacher nor college professor could successfully demonstrate in a classroom.

The Range Rover we tested came with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which keeps the 19-inch, all-season, mud-and-snow, radial tires planted firmly without slipping even during extraneous gyrations. When sensors detect wheel slippage, DSC reduces engine power and applies the ABS to the wheel that needs braking to keep the vehicle going in the direction intended.

But while planted below, you will lean above. When not cornering or turning, the ride is fairly smooth. But a Chevy Tahoe is more agile in getting into or out of the parking space. In fact, a Tahoe is more nimble on the open road as well, and less prone to lean in corners or turns because it isn't as top heavy as the Range Rover. But then, it's only about half the price.

No shortage of stretch space in the Range Rover cabin. There's also ample room for all the buttons, dials and levers to pull, push, tug or yank, such as the hill-descent control that lets off-roaders travel down steep grades at 2 to 5 m.p.h. to maintain control, and the height-adjustable suspension that allows you to lower the machine by 2 inches when loading passengers so they can climb aboard without a running leap.

The adjustable suspension also means that when entering a parking garage, a press of the button provides 2 extra inches of clearance between you and those overhead sprinklers.

Changes for '03 include stiffer body/chassis, fully independent suspension with air springs and a new torque-sensing differential that continuously and automatically changes the torque sent between front and rear axles based on available traction.

A new 5-speed automatic gives you the option of manually up- or down-shifting while an electronically activated 2-speed transfer case allows shifting from low to high or high to low on the move for those hill-climbing moments. There's also 11 inches of ground clearance to provide for better approach and departure angles for those hills.

The 4.4-liter, 282-horsepower, 32-valve V-8 was developed by BMW, which owned the Rover Group until Ford purchased it in 2000.

As part of the purchase agreement, Ford agreed to use the engine until it decides to replace it with one of its own. More than ample power, just keep in mind that each burst from the light reduces the meager 12/17 mileage.

Standard equipment includes traction control, four-wheel ABS, front- and side-impact air bags and front- and rear-seat side air-bag curtains, power windows and sunroof (with "pinch" sensors that retract the glass if hand or arm are in the way), power locks (with motion sensors activated when you use the key fob to set off an alarm if someone tries to get inside or attempts to lift it onto a flat bed to take it away), heated front/rear windows and steering wheel, automatic climate control, trip computer, puddle lamps in the outside mirrors, front and rear fog lamps, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, headlamp washers/wipers, AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player and a navigation system programmed for off-road capability.

Despite the criticism leveled at big SUVs in recent months, Baker said Land Rover anticipates sales of 11,000 Range Rovers this year, up from 8,500 last year.

While even those making $300,000 a year don't like high gas prices, any spike in fuel simply sends them to one of the other vehicles in the garage. And as for criticism that when a big SUV runs into a small car, those in the small car suffer most, obviously those who earn $300,000 a year take that as an endorsement of the big SUV rather than an indictment.

"There are pockets of the country where there is an inventory buildup," Baker admitted, "but there are pockets where the vehicle is in short supply, such as Beverly Hills and Hollywood."

In a Huffington: The Detroit Project, co-founded by Arianna Huffington, the TV talk show regular who sounds like Zsa Zsa Gabor, has been asking folks to dump their big SUVs in favor of smaller, high-mileage cars.

Now her group has issued a press release about two people who listened to the plea.

"A third-generation oil-field worker from Texas explained trading in his Ford Explorer for a Honda Civic hybrid: `I believe this is the patriotic thing to do.'"

And "a Florida documentary filmmaker traded in his Jeep Cherokee for a Toyota Prius, saying: `Trading in my SUV was a personal expression of patriotism.'"

Patriotic to purchase a Civic and Prius produced in Japan?

The last word: Couldn't let Kurt Ritter, general manager of Chevrolet, move over to general manager of Buick-Pontiac-GMC this month without asking whether the 2004 Malibu coming this fall would offer a high-performance SS edition.

"Absolutely. I just won't say when," Ritter replied.

Meet the best Range Rover ever built

When is a BMW not a BMW? When it surfaces in the form of Land Rover's '03 Range Rover. Land Rover conceived its plans for a new Range Rover in 1996--about the same time the company's then-owner, BMW, started development of its X5 sport/utility. The goal was to spread engineering expenses across both platforms. This plan's master was Dr. Wolfgang Reitzle, at the time BMW's head of product development. Dr. Reitzle left BMW in 1999 to join Ford, where he was instrumental in Ford's purchase of Land Rover in 2000 and got a second chance to finish up the Range Rover. Despite this slight interruption in parental involvement, Reitzle has fathered a superb premium-luxury sport/utility vehicle.

Compared to the current model, this new Range Rover is a radical departure, at least mechanically. Gone are the body-on-frame architecture, solid axles, and ancient OHV engines. The new chassis is welded to the body in the name of greatly enhanced structural rigidity. MacPherson struts up front and an independent rear suspension out back replace the aforementioned live-axle setups. The new hardware also features airbags rather than springs (similar to the BMW X5).

The result is dramatically improved ride and handling. Land Rover identified the BMW 5 Series as the Range Rover's on-road driving dynamics-bogey. Though it's not quite that good--understandable given its equally important mission as a serious off-roader--it's 85-90 percent as capable as the decidedly sporty X5. Whereas the current vehicle leans and doesn't feel especially pinned down while cornering, the new one tackles curves as well as it does mud.

Off-road, the new version at least equals the present Range Rover--and that's a compliment. Like the current model, ride height is adjustable, offering low, medium, and high settings for entry/exit, highway, and off-road driving. The IRS rear differential is tucked up high, creating more ground clearance (11.0 in. versus old 8.4). Land Rover's renowned Hill Decent Control makes off-roading safer by limiting vehicle speed when descending steep terrain. The electronically shifted 4x4 system can be activated on the fly.

One of today's Range Rover's major weaknesses is its outdated 4.0 and 4.6L V-8 engines. BMW fixed this by providing the smooth and powerful DOHC 4.4L V-8 and five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode (both available in the X5). Yes, a Ford-owned brand powered by a BMW engine--no bad thing. Despite being 485 lb heavier than the current version, the '03 should run 0-60 mph in about 9.0 sec--or 1.5 sec faster than the '02.

While former owner BMW provided much engineering support, and new owner Ford contributed manufacturing expertise, veteran Land Rover designer Don Wyatt penned this bold, modern interpretation of the classic Range Rover theme. This elegantly imposing luxo 'ute is 9.3 in. longer, 2.6 wider, and 1.8 taller than its predecessor, on a wheelbase of 113.4 in. (a 5.3-in. increase).

While the exterior is evolutionary, the interior is revolutionary. Even though Land Rover claims few parts are shared between the Range Rover and X5, much of the Rover's interior is clearly BMW-sourced. No matter: It all makes for one of the most well-detailed, finely finished sport/utility cockpits ever. Its combination of leathers and woods is superb. The HDC and 4x4 levers mounted just aft of the shifter rate special mention for their ease of use. Interior room has increased, especially in the formerly tight back-seat area. Standard safety equipment includes dual front, front side, and front/rear head airbags, ABS, and Dynamic Stability Control.

The first Range Rover was introduced in 1970; the second-generation came along in 1994. Both were benchmarks of their time, but this newest Range Rover goes far beyond. Where the previous models lacked sophisticated engine technology and on-road driving dynamics, this fabulous Land Rover/BMW/Ford hybrid has it all and will be a sure hit among its affluent buyership. The ongoing challenge for Land Rover will be to produce future vehicles that are as well-engineered and as refined as this one, now that Ford has taken over and the access to BMW and its considerable engineering prowess is gone. Look for the new Range Rover to play in the rarified air between $70,000 and $80,000. TT

A New Dressing Room
For 50 years Land Rover has been building vehicles in Solihull, England. And from the outside, it's like nothing's changed; however, with $300 million of BMW monies, everything inside is completely new. Building each vehicle, essentially by hand, is now a thing of the past. Where two robots helped build the previous Range Rover, close to 130 robots are now responsible for production, assembly, and quality control. Land Rover is looking to produce 700 Range Rovers per week at the Solihull plant, with a little less than half of those coming to the U.S.--M.W.
