Dynamism with Refinement

The European version of the new RX300 uses a development of the transversely mounted high-performance 3-litre V6 engine of the original model. Power is increased from 201bhp to 204bhp by refinement of the intake and exhaust systems. A combination of these engine refinements with a more aerodynamic body and higher-performance tyres increases the top speed from 112mph to 124mph.

A new five-speed automatic transmission is used for the first time. In addition to offering additional driver appeal with a sequential manual gearchange, combined fuel economy is also improved as a result; from 21.7mpg for the original RX300, to 22.4mpg for the new model. Thanks to this, the new Lexus RX300 also complies with EURO IV emission regulations. The new gearbox is combined with a new drivetrain in which the torque distribution between the front and rear wheels is electronically controlled by the Traction Control (TRC), rather than the previous mechanical control by a viscous limited-slip differential. The new TRC system provides more precise control, providing smooth traction even when the throttle pedal is used roughly.

The improved engine and new drivetrain set new standards in refinement, even beyond the class leading standards set by the original RX300. One key to this is the straightening of both the exhaust system and the driveline routes under the car, to minimise resonance and vibration. As a principle source of vibration is under hard acceleration, the front section of the driveline is canted forward by 2 degrees to allow it to assume the optimum straight line under load.

This attention to detail is matched by similar refinements in structure and sound deadening to ensure that wind and road noise levels are the lowest in the class. The new RX300 has been developed with the use of the Maibara wind tunnel, which was also used for the development of the Shinkansen Bullet Train and is capable of generating wind speeds up to 250mph. The wind tunnel’s very low background noise allows Lexus to concentrate on the reduction of wind noise to all-time low levels. Computational Fluid Dynamics research was also used, with areas such as the positioning of the parked windscreen wipers and the shaping of the A-pillars being refined to reduce wind noise by an average of 5dB in all frequencies.

"The development team strived in improving the new RX’s performance in the areas of high frequency noise, idling booming noise, vibration and wind noise. As a result, passengers can enjoy a relaxed drive at cruise speeds and an absence of noise and vibration at idling speeds. However, the excellent NV performance of the Lexus RX will not deter its driver from enjoying superior driving pleasure," said Chief Engineer Okane. "The new RX combines this with

Advanced Styling, Dynamic Performance, Safety Equipment and some outstanding features – that is how it should be for the new Lexus RX."

Original, Attractive Interior Design

"The new interior design must have originality and attractions suitable for the new breed of SUV buyer," says Mr Okane. "The interior concept reflects the dynamic style of the exterior."

As well as the customary standards of Lexus comfort, ambience, practicality and luxury, the RX combines the latest contemporary design with the highest quality materials. The interior design is sporty but spacious, solid but luxurious, in a light and roomy cabin trimmed with a choice of three colours which match the ivory, black or light grey leather seats.

The main instrument cluster in front of the driver is housed in a distinctive three-pod design with a central speedometer, flanked by tachometer and a multi-function display.

The dashboard features a distinctive brushed metal surround on each side of the centre console, containing the 7-inch screen for the optional Lexus Navigator, climate and audio controls. An 11-speaker premium audio system will also be available based on Lexus’ unique collaboration with the world’s most exclusive maker of home audio systems, Mark Levinson.

The central ‘cool metal’ trim is complemented by curved light wood in the lower console containing the selector lever for the sequential automatic transmission, and as highlights on the steering wheel, door trims and on the centre console box between the front seats. The adjustable console box can either slide forward to give a feeling of continuity with the centre console, or backwards to allow a ‘walkthrough’ between the front seats.

Safety

The new Lexus RX offers a wealth of features to set new standards in both active and passive safety. Uppermost are the excellent driving dynamics, aided still further by Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist technology, but additionally the new RX carries more safety equipment than any other vehicle in its segment.

AFS, Adaptive Front-lighting System, is one of the several safety features available in the new Lexus RX. For the first time in an SUV, AFS uses an electronic controller to calculate from the vehicle speed and steering angle, the optimum swivel of the lighting area for better visibility while cornering. Unlike earlier systems which were merely linked to a car’s steering, the AFS controller controls the lighting direction independently and is combined with HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlights with an automatic levelling system for optimum night-time vision.

Rain sensing windscreen wipers will be available and a timed spray windscreen wash system is fitted to ensure the best possible visibility in poor weather. This is further aided by the use of water-repellent glass, which is specially coated to maintain clear vision through the front side windows.

The original RX remains one of the best-performing sport-utility vehicles in terms of passive safety performance, as confirmed by crash-tests conducted by independent organisations in the United States, like IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). Lexus engineers have ensured that the new model protects its occupants even more thoroughly. Standard equipment includes multi-stage driver and front passenger SRS airbags. For the first time, the driver airbag features three deployment modes, adapting the inflation pressure according to information gathered from the seat position sensor, crash severity sensor and seatbelt buckle switch. Standard side curtain shield airbags offer supplemental head protection for occupants in side impacts.

The side protection is further enhanced by "Thorax-Abdomen-Pelvis" side airbags. This new type of airbag features a capacity of 13 litres, compared with 10 litres for the conventional side airbags. For this reason, it can reduce the risk of chest and abdomen injuries by spreading the forces over a wider area.

Injuries to the legs, common in major frontal impacts are likely to be significantly reduced by the RX’s provision of a knee airbag for the driver, for the first time in the segment.

The main purpose of knee airbag adoption is to reduce injury from contact with steering column and lower dashboard structures, but they have also been found to reduce head and chest injuries by reducing the pelvis displacement and rotation of the torso in a major impact.

The overall structural strength of the new RX also plays a significant part in protecting its occupants. Over 80 cars were crash tested, achieving optimal results in impacts far greater than the mandatory crash test requirements.

The new RX300 will go on sale in the UK in May 2003. Further details regarding exact specification, grading structure and pricing will be available closer to launch date.

New RX 330 Model Is First Lexus To Be Built In North America

The 2004 Lexus RX 330 will be the brand's first vehicle built outside of Japan. The award-winning Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Inc. (TMMC) assembly plant in Cambridge, Ontario, and its team members have been prepared to match the quality standards established at the Kyushu, Japan, plant where some RX 330 models will continue to be built. Production at the Canadian facility will begin in September 2003.

The RX 330 succeeds the RX 300, the first crossover-based luxury-utility vehicle and the best-selling model in its segment. The new RX 330 is expected to continue as the brand's top-volume model.

"The TMMC plant has been building vehicles since 1988, and the workforce there is as passionate about pursuing perfection as their colleagues in Japan," said Denny Clements, Lexus group vice president and general manager. "Their focus is craftsmanship, not manufacturing."

The pilot team has spent two years working on the RX 330 project, including benchmarking the Kyushu plant. Hundreds of TMMC team members received special training at Kyushu, including tearing down a new RX to do a complete analysis of the body panel gap dimensions and paint.

TMMC honed the production process using a 3D computer tool called digital analysis to "assemble" a virtual RX 330. Engineers in Kyushu and Canada both were able to watch the process and observe if the TMMC plant presented any kind of assembly line interference and to determine if special tools would be required. This phase of development even took into account the larger size of the average Canadian team member compared to the Lexus team members in Japan.

The TMMC plant has been enhanced in preparation for RX 330 production, adding exclusive welding and paint shops for the Lexus model. Only the plastics and stamping shops are shared with Toyota models. The TMMC welding shop is equipped with a laser measurement system that checks some 700 points on the vehicle for body panel alignment.

The new paint shop was designed to be among the most environmentally conscious. It features its own climate control system, glass walls and zero-dust, high-efficiency ovens. A new water-based paint system uses individual cartridges for each color, and these don't need to be cleaned out between color changes.

The team members in the paint shop are truly passionate about their craft and have visited competitors' dealerships to inspect paint and even borrowed cars to examine them under the paint shop's lights.

"Independent organizations repeatedly judged the original RX model as the highest-quality vehicle in its segment, and we're fully confident that the North American-built RX 330 can achieve that standard of excellence, as well," said Ray Tanguay, president of TMMC.

The Cambridge plant has always applied high standards. Since the facility opened 12 years ago it has earned seven J.D. Power and Associates awards for Initial Plant Quality - four of which were Gold Plant awards.

The TMMC plant is flexibly configured to build several different models, including the Toyota Corolla and Matrix. Approximately 60,000 units of the plant's annual 250,000 vehicle capacity, will come from RX 330 production. Employment at the Canadian facility is about 3,500 people. To make room for the Lexus RX 330, assembly of the Toyota Solara will move to the Georgetown, Ky., plant, and assembly of the Sienna minivan will move from Georgetown to the Princeton, Ind., plant.

Lexus Introduces New RX 330 Luxury Utility Vehicle For 2004 -- Second Generation of Segment-Leading Model Sets New Luxury Standard

Lexus RX 330 Brings Premium Features To Entry-Luxury SUV Segment

The vehicle that started it all is back with more luxury features than ever. The all-new 2004 Lexus RX 330 is equipped with driveline and safety systems that provide the RX driver and passengers with even greater peace of mind in all types of driving conditions. In addition, Lexus increased standard luxury content in the new RX 330 compared to the previous model while making new premium-level options available.

New technology added to the RX 330 was designed to make the vehicle easier and more enjoyable to drive and more comfortable for passengers. "Lexus customers expect any new technology to improve the driving experience, not to complicate or frustrate it," said Denny Clements Lexus group vice president and general manager.

Adaptive Headlight And Cruise Control Systems
The new RX 330 offers several options designed to help improve visibility for night driving and poor weather conditions. Rain-sensing windshield wipers and High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights are expected in this segment, but Lexus goes further by offering an Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) for better illumination in turns and curves. A central controller calculates the optimum lighting direction based on input from vehicle speed and steering angle and swivels the right and left headlights independently. As a result, the driver can see further into a curve.
In place of the standard cruise control system, customers can choose Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) like that offered on the Lexus LS 430 flagship sedan. It uses lasers to measure distance from a vehicle traveling ahead and maintain a set distance from it.

Optional Air Suspension System
A new optional air suspension system helps enhance handling, driving comfort, and versatility in the RX 330. Automatic leveling ensures generous suspension travel and helps to preserve ride comfort. Four driver-selectable height settings allow the driver to tailor the RX 330 to specific driving conditions or needs.

In "Normal" mode, the system lowers ride height by 0.3 inches (7 mm) when vehicle speed exceeds 62 mph (100 km/h) to reduce aerodynamic drag for better handling and ride comfort. The vehicle returns to normal ride height when speed falls below about 50 mph (80 km/h). A driver-selectable "Low" mode reduces ride height by 0.6 inches (15 mm), resulting in more responsive steering and better tracking through curves and further supports the vehicle's sedan-like driving characteristics.

The air suspension system helps boost the light-duty off-road capability that some customers want without compromising the on-road performance and comfort that are cornerstones of the vehicle's appeal and success. For driving over rough roads or unpaved trails at speeds of 30 mph or under, the driver can select the "High" position, which increases ground clearance by 1.2 inches (30 mm) and also increases the angles of approach and departure.

The air suspension's "Access" mode lowers ride height by 1.2 inches (30 mm) to make it easier to exit or load/unload the RX 330. The driver can select this mode while the vehicle is idling in the Park position, and the RX 330 can change to "Access" mode automatically when the ignition switch is turned off if the driver chooses.

Components of the air suspension system include a compressor/dryer unit mounted at the rear of the vehicle, a low-pressure tank under the floor and a pneumatic cylinder at each wheel. Each of the cylinders integrates an air spring and shock absorber. There is a height-control valve between the compressor and each of the pneumatic cylinders, and a height sensor for each axle. A central electronic control unit (ECU) controls the valves in response to signals from the height sensors. The low-pressure tank ensures quick suspension lowering response time. All RX 330 models with the air suspension system are equipped with a multi-mode automatic (sequential) transmission.

New VSC-Controlled Four-Wheel Drive
Both the front-drive and four-wheel drive RX 330 models come equipped with the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system as standard. In both models, VSC helps keep the vehicle going on its intended course by detecting front wheel slide and rear-wheel slide during cornering and attempting to control either condition with torque intervention and/or by braking individual wheels.

The new four-wheel drive system for the RX 330 is simpler and lighter than the one used previously and uses VSC to redirect engine power when wheel slippage occurs. In addition, driveshaft elements are situated in a straighter line, which helps reduce friction and driveline noise.

Like its predecessor, the RX 330 uses a center differential to split engine power evenly between the front and rear wheels. If wheelslip occurs, VSC re-apportions power front-to-rear and side-to-side, eliminating the need for the viscous coupling used on the previous model.

A new standard tire pressure monitor alerts the driver in the event of tire under-inflation. VSC and the Brake Assist feature work with the standard four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS). Brake Assist is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking and, if the driver has not stepped hard enough on the brake pedal to engage the ABS, the system applies maximum braking power until pedal pressure is released.

New Safety Systems
The new-generation supplemental restraint systems (SRS) in the RX 330 include multi-stage front airbags for the driver and passenger, a new knee airbag for the driver and a new kind of side airbag in the front seats. The multi-stage front passenger and driver front airbags deploy according to impact severity. The technology behind these systems also takes passenger weight and driver seat position on the seat track into account.

The Lexus RX 330 side airbags cover the torso, abdomen and pelvis and are larger than those used in other vehicles. The side airbags also help provide additional crash energy management for the front and rear outboard occupants.

The RX 330 is available with the optional Lexus Link system. At the press of a button, or automatically in certain emergency situations, Lexus Link combines GPS satellite and cellular phone technology to connect the customer with experienced and trained Lexus Link advisors at anytime, day or night, 365 days a year (when cellular and GPS services are available). Lexus Link services include automatic notification of air bag deployment, dispatch of emergency services, accident assistance, roadside assistance with location, theft notification and stolen vehicle tracking, plus remote door lock and unlock.

New Options Raise the Level of Luxury
A number of new options for the RX 330 are designed to increase comfort, convenience and listening pleasure. Lexus expects most RX 330 customers to choose the power rear liftgate, which can be controlled by the standard in-key remote entry unit. An available power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel column helps to ensure comfort for drivers of all heights.

Lexus is the only car company to offer custom-tailored Mark Levinson audio systems. The RX 330 system produces 240 watts of continuous average power at a remarkably low .01% THD, through a 20-20,000 Hz frequency response. The Mark Levinson system available in the RX 330 plays through 11 speakers, including a center channel speaker.

An optional, factory-installed DVD rear-seat entertainment system uses a high-resolution TFT screen that lowers from the headliner, and the package includes a remote control and two wireless headphones. Rear seat passengers can listen to a different audio source than those in the front when using the wireless headphones.
A DVD-based Lexus Navigation System with a rear back-up camera is optional. The rear back-up camera is mounted near the top of the license plate surround and automatically projects an image of what is behind the vehicle onto the navigation screen when the vehicle is in the reverse gear.

Lexus Leads Luxury SUV Category With Three-Model Strategy

The 2004 Lexus RX 330 is an integral part of the three-model luxury utility vehicle strategy that has made Lexus the leader of this category. The all-new GX 470 introduced for model year 2003 is a full-capability V8-powered SUV positioned between the RX 330 and the premium-luxury LX 470. The two new-model introductions and a revised LX 470 give Lexus the youngest line of luxury utility vehicles in the industry.

"The concept of 'luxury utility vehicles' aims to clearly describe to consumers what Lexus produces, promises and delivers," said Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager Denny Clements. "Lexus luxury utility vehicles not only symbolize power and prestige, but their upscale, aspirational image and generous luxury appointments set them apart from other automotive makes."

Lexus was the first full-line luxury brand to offer a luxury utility vehicle, with the launch of the LX 450 in March 1996. Within two months on the market, it had surpassed the Range Rover in total unit sales. With the addition of the RX 300 in 1998, Lexus became the leader in luxury SUV sales, and since then, has been able to capture 26 percent or more of total luxury SUV sales.

Over the years, the luxury SUV market has changed dramatically. Several luxury brands have adopted a two-SUV strategy or expanded the variations available on one model. The segment continues to expand, adding both traditional-type models and crossover vehicles based on passenger car platforms. The luxury SUV segment has grown from just under 90,000 units in 1997 to just over 322,000 in 2001, and is expected to reach 580,000 in 2005.

"Lexus broke new ground when it launched its first Luxury SUV more than six years ago," said Clements. "At the time, there were doubters - including the competition - who questioned whether a luxury brand could successfully expand into sport utility vehicles. Today, the competition is following our lead."

With significant growth of new product entries, the luxury SUV category segmentation has grown to mirror that of luxury sedans, with entry, mid-size and premium luxury models. Brand loyalty in the luxury category is highest among SUVs, strengthening the business case to offer three different models. Each of the Lexus luxury utility vehicles appeals to distinct customer needs and desires. Moreover, each of the three models fulfills a distinct role in the brand's line, with little or no overlap in pricing.

RX 330: New Generation of Entry-Luxury Crossover Pioneer
The 2004 Lexus RX 330 succeeds the RX 300, which had remained the best-selling model in its competitive set right through its final season.

Launching an SUV first in the premium luxury class helped to create brand aspiration and spur demand for a lower-priced model. However, Lexus recognized that a high-volume model would attract many customers who would be moving out of passenger cars, and so it would need to provide passenger car-like ride and feel. With the launch of the five-seat RX 300 in 1998, Lexus created the template for today's entry luxury SUVs.

Based on a passenger car/SUV "crossover" platform, the RX 300 was the first luxury brand vehicle to truly combine SUV versatility with the performance and comfort of a luxury sedan. The RX 300 quickly became the best-selling luxury SUV in the market and helped grow the Lexus brand significantly.

The 2004 RX 330 builds on the successful formula of the RX 300, giving loyal customers more of what they loved about the original while providing additional technology and luxury content that have helped to make Lexus the No. 1 selling luxury brand in the U.S. market. Direct competitors include the Acura MDX, BMW X5 3.0i, Mercedes-Benz ML320 and Volvo XC90.

GX 470: Mid-Size, Full Capability
The 2003 GX 470 fills a gap in price and capability between the car-based, entry-luxury RX 330 model and the premium luxury LX 470. With body-on-frame construction, V8 power and seating for up to eight passengers, the GX 470 is conceptually similar to the LX 470. It offers more room and greater towing capacity than the RX 330, and its innovative four-wheel drive and advanced dynamic control systems help give it the capability to navigate rugged off-highway terrain. Lexus expects to sell more than 20,000 of the new model in 2003.

The GX 470 is slightly smaller than the LX 470. Its standard equipment and options give customers a taste of the luxury that's available in the LX 470. The off-road system unites several advanced technologies to give the GX 470 the kind of off-road capability that customers in this segment have come to expect.

The GX 470 will attract new customers to Lexus. It also will provide a new choice for previous RX 300 owners who are looking for greater vehicle capability but want to remain within the brand. Competitors include the Mercedes-Benz ML500, BMW X5 4.4i, Land Rover Discovery, as well as the larger Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.

LX 470: Full-Size, Premium Luxury
The eight-seat LX 470 is a premium, full-size, full-capability model that will remain a relatively low-volume flagship in the Lexus luxury utility vehicle strategy. Its body-on-frame construction, high-torque V8 engine, sophisticated chassis and four-wheel drive provide uncompromised off-road capability for customers who need it, without sacrificing the smooth ride quality that Lexus customers expect.

As a flagship model, the LX 470 is a technology leader. Adjustable Height Control suspension debuted on this model, for example. For 2003, the LX 470 introduced a new optional Night View System that uses near-infrared technology to help enhance nighttime driving visibility.

The LX 470 has also been something of a model for others to follow, with more competitors introducing full-size luxury SUVs in the past few years. Its key competitors include the BMW X5 4.6i, Land Rover Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG and G-Class.

nice

The RX330 is nice for what it is.... but Lexus missed the mark I think, for me personally at least. But it definitely has a lot of nice features I would like. HID headlamps mostly haha maybe the looks of the RX will grow on me. I'm sure to see tons of them in my area

Lexus Introduces New RX 330 Luxury Utility Vehicle For 2004

Five years ago, the Lexus RX 300 created the luxury crossover segment. Lexus will once again revolutionize this segment with its all-new 2004 RX 330 which made its worldwide debut at a press conference yesterday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The second generation RX will go on sale in April and will offer luxury amenities and technology not available in other vehicles in its class.

"The original RX 300 became the template for a new kind of luxury vehicle, one that many competitors are now following," said Denny Clements, Lexus group vice president and general manager. "The RX 330 was designed to surpass its successful predecessor in every way and set a new benchmark in the segment."

The RX 330 will become the first Lexus to be manufactured in North America when production begins on a new line at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Canada, seven months after initial production starts at the Kyushu plant in Japan.

The 2004 RX 330 is an integral part of the unique three-SUV strategy that has allowed Lexus to lead this category of the market. It will have an annual sales target of 75,000 units and the base price for the RX is expected to remain at about $35,000.

Several new features help the RX 330 raise the standard in the entry-luxury SUV segment. Examples include the innovative Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), adjustable-height air suspension, adaptive cruise control, power rear liftgate, and rear backup camera.

The sleek new RX 330 has more room than the previous generation afforded by a 6.1-inch longer body and a wheelbase that is almost four inches longer. Width has also grown by 1.1 inches while height has grown by just under half an inch.

Lexus optimized interior comfort and utility in the RX 330 for five passengers. The second-row seats both slide and recline while the seatbacks feature a new 40/20/40 split design. The available power rear liftgate is controlled from the standard in-key remote entry system. An automatic-retracting tonneau cover adds a measure of security and convenience.

The RX will be one of the first U.S. vehicles with AFS. It features swiveling headlamps to help illuminate the driver's path on curves. The RX 330 also offers a unique adaptive laser cruise control system like that on the brand's LS 430 flagship sedan.

A revised V6 engine displacing 3.3 liters and producing 230 horsepower and 242 lb-ft. of torque powers the RX 330. It features a new electronic drive-by-wire throttle and continuously Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) system for excellent response. A ULEV rating is also achieved.

Teamed to a new five-speed electronic automatic transmission, the larger V6 gives the RX 330 all-wheel drive model a best-in-class zero-to-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds (vs. 8.8 for the RX 300) while providing EPA estimated fuel mileage of 18 mpg city/ 24 mpg highway (+1 mpg on each cycle over the RX 300).

The 2004 RX 330 provides an even smoother and quieter ride than the previous RX, thanks to a stiffer body structure, a redesigned active engine mount, new sound-absorption materials and refined aerodynamic details. Noise from the powertrain, road and wind have all been reduced to nearly the same levels as in the Lexus ES 300 sedan.

The stiffer platform, newly standard 17-inch wheels and revised steering help to optimize handling response in the RX 330. Eighteen-inch wheels also are available. The optional air suspension system provides automatic leveling and four selectable height settings which allow the driver to tailor the RX 330 to specific driving conditions or needs, including an access mode to provide easier entry, exit and cargo loading. A multi-mode automatic (sequential) transmission is standard on air suspension-equipped models.

All RX 330 models come equipped with the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system, which helps control loss of lateral traction while cornering. VSC and the Brake Assist feature work with the standard four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS). A tire pressure monitor alerts the driver with a light on the instrument panel in the event of tire under-inflation.

The high-strength cabin and a comprehensive new supplemental restraint system are designed to help provide a new level of crash energy management for occupants in the RX 330.

Supplemental restraint systems (SRS) include multi-stage front airbags for the driver and passenger, side-curtain airbags, a new knee airbag for the driver and a new large side airbag in the front seats that covers the torso, abdomen and pelvis.

Available rain-sensing windshield wipers, AFS and High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights with washers enhance visibility in poor-weather and night driving. The RX 330 can also be ordered with the optional Lexus Link system.

Lexus craftsmanship and attention to the smallest details provide true luxury by design. Dual-zone automatic climate control and an eight-way power front driver seat with memory (four-way for the passenger seat) highlight the front cabin. The three-spoke steering wheel comes with standard, easy-to-use controls for the audio system and trip computer.

A sliding center console, adjustable light in the visor vanity mirrors and a choice of two genuine wood interior trim options are among the luxurious details that set the tone for luxury in the RX 330.

The high-performance CD audio system upholds the Lexus tradition of making premium-quality sound standard. RX customers will be able to upgrade to an optional Mark Levinson 11-speaker system with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer. A factory-installed rear DVD entertainment system is also available.

Lexus has been adding premium-level options to its entry-luxury models, and notable examples for the RX 330 include a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel with memory, a wide-opening multi-panel moonroof and a new illuminated entry system that lights the door handles, scuff plates and front foot wells.

A DVD-based Lexus Navigation System with a rear back-up camera also is optional. The rear back-up camera automatically projects a color image of what is behind the vehicle onto the navigation screen when the vehicle is in the reverse gear.

The RX 330 will be available in nine colors, six of which are all-new to the model.

2004 Lexus RX330
It’s testosterrific!
by John Pearley Huffman

The exact same teenage girls whose parents gave them VW Rabbit Cabrios during the Eighties have been, as young mothers and professionals, driving Lexus RX300s during the late Nineties and early 2Ks. Having survived their journeys through the Greek system at the University of Southern California, they’ve married the men of their dreams (all of whom are securely employed as senior vice presidents in their fathers’ construction firms) and now live in 4500-square foot mini-mansions along the shore in California cities like Laguna Niguel, Dana Point, or Palos Verdes. Their kids are undeniably cute, their hair is perfect, and they don’t want anyone screwing around with the design of their Lexus.

But Lexus has thoroughly twisted the RX for 2003 making it more powerful, more attractive, more useful and, well, more manly. The question for Lexus is how much testosterone do they dare cram into an RX? Can they build a muscular crossover without disaffecting core buyers who are swimming in estrogen? Can they attract just as many male as female drivers?

Something new, something borrowed

Actually, while everything about the RX330 is new, including where it’s built (Canada, not Japan), it’s clearly designed around the same idea as the RX300, which debuted back in ’98. The sheetmetal is more crisply styled and is free of the over-styling that’s currently infecting so many crossovers. This is probably the only crossover SUV on the market that has the self-confidence and elegance to not look like it’s pretending to be a “tough” truck.

As is to be expected, the unibody structure is stiffer, the sound insulation materials are better, and the aerodynamics have been tweaked to reduce wind noise. It’s slightly larger than its predecessor (the wheelbase is up about four inches and overall length has grown more than six), and a bit roomier (more legroom and more luggage capacity). It’s also slightly more powerful with its 3.3-liter 24-valve V-6 making 230 horsepower, as opposed to the RX300 3.0-liter V-6’s output of 220 horsepower. The engine is also quieter and smoother, and benefits from one more gear in the new five-speed automatic transmission. So a machine that was already refined, quiet, and composed is better in all those ways.

Changes to the suspension are substantial. Now on standard 17-inch wheels (18-inchers are optional) with struts up front and dual links in the back, every RX330 rides well. But it gets better when the optional air suspension system is ordered. The driver adjustable system’s “normal” mode actually scrunches down about a third of an inch closer to the ground when the SUV exceeds 62 mph and rises back to its original height at lower speeds. In “low” mode, the suspension drops more than a half-inch down for better handling. Finally in “access” mode the suspension drops 1.2 inches to help getting people and stuff in and out of the vehicle. The system works, and the difference in ride quality and handling is instantly noticeable.

Thematic progression

Inside the new interior continues with themes established by the RX300. It’s a classy interior with subdued wood accents, and gorgeous electro-luminescent instrumentation. The seats are all comfortable, the materials used are top notch, and the ergonomic hiccups are minimal. New features include a power-operated tailgate (not that anyone was really asking for one), an oversize multi-panel sunroof (because if a little sun is good, a lot is better), an improved DVD and GPS-based navigation system (should the world’s maps suddenly disappear), an on-board DVD entertainment system for the rear seat passengers (that’ll shut the precious children up) and a truly awe-inspiring Mark Levinson sound system. Whoever Mark Levinson is, he sure can tune a sound system. This one sounds so good it’s like New York Philharmonic is in the spare-tire well. It’s sounds so good you’ll wish the in-dash CD changer held 60 CDs instead of just six. It would also be nice if the sound system had a jack for hacking in an MP3 player. Not available at all is a third row seat. If you want one, buy a minivan… or an Acura MDX.

The new engine’s variable valve timing has swollen its powerband, making it an extremely friendly companion. It’s easygoing, powerful, and perfectly matched to the transmission and all-wheel drive system (front-wheel drive is also available). In fact you have to pay close attention to notice any shifts at all. The RX330 isn’t the SUV you want if you’re towing a trailer full of dirt bikes to Mt. Inaccessible, but it handles urban life with ease. In acceleration it’s probably a close match for the MDX. Lexus claims a 0-to-60 mph sprint of 7.7 seconds for a front-wheel-drive RX330 and 7.8 seconds for the all-wheel-drive model.

With Lexus’ Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) working with the all-wheel drive system (the torque split is electronically controlled; the center differential is gone) to protect the vehicle from doing anything stupid the driver tells it to do, this isn’t a vehicle for spirited driving. But for cruising it’s outstanding and reassuring. There are side curtain airbags should the driver somehow trick the RX into crashing.

Two gadgets available on the RX330 rate a special mention. First is “adaptive lighting,” in which the high-intensity discharge headlights steer with the front wheels for improved visibility around corners (insert trite mention of the Tucker 48 here). And second is the rear-view video camera that displays what’s behind the RX in the navigation system’s LCD screen when it’s in reverse. You can’t throw away the rear view mirror because the camera is aboard, but it shoots relatively low where tots could be wandering behind the RX as it backs out of a driveway.

There is a manlier vibe to the RX330 than there ever was to the RX300, but it’s not overwhelming. It’s the sort of vibe one gets from a man of confidence and competence instead of one bent on conquest and domination. In other words, just the type of vibe women like.
