2005 4Runner Center Consloe stays open?

I have a 2005 Toyota 4Runner 60 days out of warranty with the center console storage box cover that stays open. It is spring loaded, and I belive there is a pin that is broken. My local dealer said parts are $450? OUCH
Anyone got a cheaper fix?

I was thinking you could line the edge of the door or console with some adhesive backed foam. When closed it could create a wedge to some degree that the door won't open. Or perhaps very low tack velcro. Opening it would be another problem. You'd probably have to pry it open.

$450 in parts? Damn that's like a tire and a half. If mine were broken like that I would just install the OEM accessoriy ashtray module and in the end have two 12V outlets up front.

I had the same problem. After you remove this little box from the console you will see that on one end of the box there is a metal pin that rides in a groove. On mine the pin had been pushed back away from the groove and all I had to do to fix it was to push the pin back down so it rode in the groove again. Has given no trouble since. If your pin is broken off I would try inserting something else (perhaps another dowel pin that is slightly larger than the original). Directions for removing the console piece are Here

Hey dingo, how much was that part, and where does it get its power from? I would assume it is wired up in parallel with the existing lighter, since it is right beside it. Any more info would be great!

I thought I would help before your question disappears. Toyota part #74110-35010-BO Ashtray $58.65US is plug and play, both plugs are already there under the console.

You saved me multi bucks for sure. I couldn't figure out how to remove just the box, but per your instructions and pics on removing the console I was still able to see the pin sticking out no more than .062", I just pushed it back in past from flush and whala! Fixed. Thanks again!!

Thanks DRmorbius and bonjarta. My 2005 4Runner I just bought yesterday is doing the same thing. I was able to remove the console and see the ashtray but it was connected to the console and I could not get in there to see the pin/spring. Did you take the ashtray/lighter box out of the console first to fix it or fix it while still in the console? Many thanks.

If getting new or used isn't an option try something similar to furniture magnetic pop-up opener. Might need one with good magnet to hold it closed.

Hey guys my name is Noelle I am looking to buy a 2004 4runner with that 126,000 miles on it. It has had regular upkeep and quite a bit of work done to it timing belt changed 1 time and water pump changed twice, with only 1 owner. I live in Colorado, it is a 4x4 and I'm just looking to see if I'm getting a good price. They want $9900 for it. Please help thanks!
