2005 4Runner Sunroof

After reading posts about the sunroof problems I was closing in on 36K mi so I took it in to Toyota dealer and told them it was making rattling noises and leaking air.They did the TSB on the
old grease hardening and re adjusted the tracks.I must say i am glad I had this done because the guy told me it was loaded with
chunks of old dried out grease and he said it could have jammed any time.It now is quiet again and works super smooth and leaks no air.I hope this prevents any future costly problems.

I feel like I'm playing Russian roulette with my new sunroof. I don't use my sunroof too often and I must admit that I don't even notice it's there at times (but am reminded when my hair brushes the ever low headliner). I try to use and open/close it once in a while just to keep the parts lubricated. However, at the same time I am apprehensive that at those moments it will stop tracking properly. I keep thinking (or praying), "Please close, please close, please close."

Has anyone tried to grease the sunroof tracks themselves? I've searched most forums to no avail.

Thanks, Fro. So I guess any grease other than the Li based should be used. However, I wonder if the new assembly mentioned in the TSB is used in the '07 models because that's what I have for my SE. My '05 SR5 doesn't have a sunroof, however. Still, good idea to lube just the same.

the TSB does include the 2007 model years.

If the above attachment doesn't download then you can also get it from within the same link I gave you in previous sentence. I hope this helps you out....just remember to lube the roof's parts every 6 mos. if you use it often or yearly for rare usage.

Ah. Thanks again, Fro! That TSB has some good info. I love reading stuff like this, anything that gives me more info to learn about my trucks. Kind of makes me wonder what the plastic tubing is for if it is not needed as stated in the TSB.

When the weather gets nice,I use my SR alot.This seems to be the only serious issue with the 4Runners.I have a good friend that
is a Toyota Master Tech and he did the TSB so i know it was done correctly.I am also not afraid to use it because he will also fix it for me out of warranty.He said that the 4Runner is one of the most reliable vehicles that Toyota produces.He rarely ever has them come in for major repair.My brother had a 97' with almost 300K on it and never had any major problems,a guy down the street purchased it from him and he drives it daily.He put it at the end of his long driveway for $7500 and walked in the house and his phone rang and the guy was outside on his cell looking at it.
He started it up and bought it on the spot.

Kind of makes me wonder what the plastic tubing is for if it is not needed as stated in the TSB.

My guess is that they are for the sunroof rattle tsb, where the little metal rods that arementioned in the TSB's can rattle around. The tubing goes over the rods to keep them from making noise, I believe.

I just went through hell with my 05 sunroof. I took it in for some rattling noises and they did the TSB on it. The ordered the necessary parts and then fixed it. That took 4 days as when the new sunroof came in the motor was DOA. They ordered a new motor and then had everything all installed. I drive it home that night and after the gym I open it and it makes a loud clicking sound as it opened and got stuck open! It wouldn't close regardless as hard as I tried pulling on it while pushing the button. Took it back in again and some to find out, the new cassette they put in was bad along with the stripped gears. They ordered another and it still wasn't working properly. They get a Toyota engineer to come out and look at it. They put some aluminum rails on it and after at total of 16 days without my vehicle, its working...for now. My next Runner will NOT have a sunroof. I don't know what their problem is with them but they definatley need to get it fixed. I had to have my sunroof replaced in my 03 Runner as well.

One solution i just completed today is to remove the entire headliner and take a look at what could be jamming it. Apprx 1.5-2 hours of work, mainly a lot of unscrewing. I have photos if needed. Mine wouldn't close and i found that the driver side black plastic slider was broke in half and jamming it in the back. after getting that out of the way, the only way to actually get it to move forward was to hold the UP button down for 15 seconds. If nothing is in the way it will move on forward. PROBLEM FIXED. I wont be opening my sunroof anytime soon
