2005 transmission (4 speed) Type IV shudder solved

"I was able to fix the issue with my 2005 4Runner LTD 4x4 regarding the strong vibration (as if going over a rumble strip) with light acceleration. I put a one ounce bottle of a friction enhancer in the sealed transmission and the issue was solved. I was initially told that I needed to replace the transmission, then it was the torque converter. The bottom line is, the transmission was serviced with other than WS fluid and the viscosity did not match what was needed. The friction enhancer stopped the torque converter from shuddering (torque converter shudder) and it has been fine through 205,000 miles. It took a bit to find the transmission plug to pour the friction enhancer into, but the transmission has worked great ever since."

This was a copy and paste
Any calm educated responses are welcome:peace:

calm educated reply: the copy & paste quote clearly says the trans uses WS fluid & he used the "fill plug" on the trans, which means its a 5 speed, not a 4 speed with a dipstick & T-IV fluid.

many people have reported using the shudder fix additive helped the shudder issue regardless of fluid type. many also say just changing the fluid with WS or maxlife which is a full synthetic universal fluid rated for WS improved the shudder issue.

Here we go again.

There are NO 4speed 2005.
There are NO sealed 5 speeds...whoops...
That should have read there are no sealed 4 speeds.
(Thanks for pointing that out firebirdguy)

The 5 speed is WS.
The 4 speed is T-IV.

all correct info, but 5 speeds are usually called "sealed" just not completely sealed up... just means they dont have a dipstick to fill & check fluid like 4 speed T-IV trans. have to do it via the check plug to check level & fill plug on the side of the trans to fill. but i know what you meant. :wink2:

Lol...thank you.
Yup see i screwed up...how easy to do.
And easy to admit to.

5 speed IS sealed.

Guess that should have been.

Just to clarify, there are 5 Speeds with a dipstick, the 2003 5 speed for sure and possibly the very early 2004 5 speeds had dipsticks and use the same T-IV fluid as the 4 speed does, most if not possibly all 2004 and onwards 5 speeds are the sealed version and use WS fluid.

my 2005 4runner doesn't have a dipstick and the dealer used Type T-IV (it's a sealed tranny) when they did the tranny service at 105,000 miles. Shifts fine - just like new in 2005.

I personally will not change to a different brand of T fluid. Just Toyota recommended Type I-V

Over 150,000 miles and the OEM engine and tranny work perfectly. No slip. Plenty of power for a V6.

synthetic is overrated IMO. Change the oil every 5000 miles.

ok, thanks for confirming that. if youre 4runner doesnt have a dipstick & is "sealed" then it is a 5 speed & it calls for WS fluid. the fact your dealer used T-IV is only because, as you said before, they just couldnt get WS. doesnt mean its the correct fluid toyota says to use & it didnt come with it when new. if you want to use T-IV thats your choice.

& the synthetic statement was about valvoline maxlife trans fluid, not oil.

2003 V6 5speed?
Have links to that info?

Even my 2004 built in 03/9 is a 340 4speed.

I have never seen any V6 T4R 2004 or before have anything but the 340 trans, with a dipstick and the 4speed.

After the 750 5speed it went sealed, with the "lifetime" BS fliud (import tax dodge).

...i am not trying to argue with any of you guys.
Happy to learn, if wrong i have no issue with that.
I was just trying to keep others from putting T-IV in a WS transmission.

...how the hell did i get in this thread...

#1 Toyota's official statement is that transmissions with T-IV fluid in them should always have T-IV in them. No swapping to WS or anything else

#2 Toyota does not approve of Maxlife for use in any of their transmissions and they have not tested it (Valvoline will tell you this)

#3 Valvoline says Maxlife is "Suitable for use" to replace pretty much any Toyota trans fluid including T-IV & WS and several reputable members have reported good results using it in multiple vehicles

When I had the dealer service my 2005 4runner at 100,000 miles they used T-IV transmission fluid by Toyota.

I have 150,000 miles on my transmission so I will continue to use T-IV in my next D/F.

I have the 4-speed and its a sealed transmission.

I'd be afraid to use anything else after 15 years with T-IV - and nothing else.

I never mentioned the V6 engine, only 5 speed transmissions.

All 2003 and 2004 V6s had the 4 speed transmissions.

2003 V8s had the non-sealed 5 speed, and as I mentioned that possibly the very early 2004 V8s also had the non-sealed 5 speed, but I'm not certain that the case, I have a mid year build 2004 with a V8 and it has the 5 speed sealed transmission.

Sorry AuSeeker i was talking v6 4runner because thats what captsolo said he had, thought we were all on the same page with captsolo.

Still it would be nice to see this 2005 with a sealed 4speed.
Would shut me right up! LOL

Maybe its the first one before the 05 switch to sealed 5 speeds?
Or Euro build?

Whats the build date captsolo?
Can you at least give that much info?

I was just harassed out of a JBA uca thread on TW, for asking questions.:dammit:
I am just here to learn.

Like when there was a rash of SPC ucas with the balljoint installed backward.
I would try and point this out so it can be remedied and to try and help others for making the same mistake.

/cheers

My 2005 4runner came to the dealer from Japan. I am in Nassau Bahamas. And, yes, it has no (tranny) dipstick. I bought it off the Toyota dealer's lot here in the Bahamas.

I had the dealer do a 5-quart D/F of tranny fluid at 100,000 miles, but have to bring it to them again now at 150,000.

Might try the D/F myself. Not sure. T-IV they told me they don't have any left, and that's what the dealer used the last D/F. I got 5 quarts of T-IV. Tranny holds almost/about 12 quarts in 2005. Mine did not come with WS. T-IV and WS are not compatible.

Getting 150,000 miles out of transmission blows my mind, but I've read of some 4runerrs with 300,000 miles on their original transmissions.

Engine/car still runs like a top. No rust on the body anywhere in 15 years.

All Toyota 4runners came to the dealers from Japan, no matter where you live, the 4runners are only built in Japan.

Also all the 4runners with the sealed transmission came from Japan with WS fluid in the transmission, so when your dealer use the "5 quarts" of incorrect T-IV fluid they mixed it with the WS fluid it came with!

Agree...+1

why is the fluid used in a 2005 4runner still such a problem to understand??? :noidea:

we have posted numerous sources & facts on 3 or 4 recent threads regarding this... ALL 2005 4runners came with WS fluid when new. ZERO 2005 4runners came new with T-IV. period.

the dealer in question here used T-IV because "they couldnt get WS" for some strange reason, as was stated numerous times in the past threads. claiming the 4runner came new with T-IV fluid is misleading to others that may read these threads & is flat out wrong.

This is my synopsis on the OP and his 2005 4runner.

We all know once he thinks he's correct, no matter if he's sometimes wrong no one can change his mind, no matter how much evidence he's is shown, I don't think he even looks at that evidence.

I think he looks at the shifter and only sees the numbers up to 4 and the 4 is beside the D not above it so 4th must be "D", and we all know he lives on a island and has a short commute (no real need for a 5th gear) so he's been driving in "D" but really he's only in 4th for over 15 years, so in his mindset, if he actually counts the shift points he really does only have a 4 speed since he's never actually has used the 5th gear, so if this is correct to how he thinks he has a 4 speed then I think he possibly told or convinced the dealer of what kind of fluid to use, I just can't grasp that any Toyota dealer anywhere in the world not being able to get WS fluid since to my knowledge all Toyotas since 2005 uses WS fluid, and now he's said the dealer can't even get T-IV, if so then what fluid are they using now!!

He also stated they don't have 5w30 on the island due to temperature. A quick Google search proved that wrong in a matter of 30 seconds. In stock in Nassau. He just types words and edits them later. No point in even trying to make sense of his ramblings.

Well I don't commute to work. You (Warwicke36) just make up a bunch of guesses as you go along.

I have lived here 30 years. I know. You a google idiot perhaps..

Toyota dealer here used Type T-IV and it's on their receipt when they did a 5 quart D/F on my 5 speed at 103,000. They replaced the filter as well.

They sold me the 4runner new.

I've contacted AISIN about this and Toyota dealer's association as well as this forum has been a waste of my time.

Personally, I doubt it makes any difference what Toyota T fluid is in my transmission. It has 150,000 miles and works perfectly.

You all can believe whatever you like.
