2005 V6 Rear Locker?

What options/if any do I have?

It appears ARB only makes one for the front? Am I missing something, do they make one for the rear as well?

Or any other selectable lockers that fit? Or retro fit a factory E-locker from some other model?

Or even mechanical lockers? -Although I'd rather not go that route.

Thanks, any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

The rear toyota 8" diff has been used in the US since 1979. Don't quote me 100% but I'm pretty sure any locker that fits any of the earlier trucks/4runners should fit yours. You can drop in an e-locked 3rd but you'd have to cut a notch in the axle housing to accommodate the locker motor.

check out the Zip locker.
I have some buddies with jeeps using these, but they make them for Toyotas as well.

not sure if they changed the 3rd members for the new rigs or not.

ARB makes a rear locker as well.

As far as selectable air lockers go, that's about it. My buddy tried to do a TJM for an LC, but ran into an interference issue inside the diff & had to go ARB.

E-locker retro is doable, but can be a bit of a hassle. Ask me how I know.

Mehcanicals, you can do the Yukon Grizzly and I think a Detroit. The Yukon selectable (Zip Locker), works on 3rd gens but not 4th I believe.

Hope that helps.

I'm running Detroit True Trac in the rear - P/N 913A610.
ARB Air Locker Front - P/N RD121

Love my setup. Before anyone asks, I did the TT in the rear instead of an ARB simply because my T4R spends about 95% of the time on the road. I wanted to have seamless operation not only for myself, but for my wife that drives it as well. It can be debated at great lengths, but I love how it works and used in combination with the traction control system, it is a hard combo to beat aside from an all out locker like the ARB in the rear.

ARB is the only option for up front. I wanted something rather than nothing, but if the TT was available for that, I probably would have gone that route as well.

If you have questions on what to do, I would give the experts at East Coast Gear Supply a call.

good choice on the TT. that is my favorite diff, besides selectables, I think they should be factory equipment in most vehicles.

ive never actually owned/used one. I almost got to install one in a firebird, but they sent the wrong part..
but I just love that design. its brilliant.
works, almost like magic lol.

seems like they make a TT (P/N 913A610) for the v6 but say none for the v8, anybody know of one for the v8?

Toyota "V6" is actually what they call our 8" Diff housing. I've also seen it referred to as a "turbo" sometimes as well. The diffs are identical between V6 & V8 4th gen 4Runners and older FJ Cruisers. Only difference being gear ratios on 04-05 V6 4Runners and 6sp MT FJ's. Hope that helps.

I'm actually a fan of this set-up as well. I've seen some people put a selective in the rear & mechanical in the front, but I'd prefer it the way you've got yours.

How does the Detroit behave for street driving? Never know it's there?

Also, I can tell you now what Chase (ECGS) is going to recommend. ARB... Do it!

I would also recommend a ZIP LOCKER as well. The kit I just installed has an ARB Compressor and everything is esentially the same, just less expensive AND zip locker has a 6yr warranty.

Wait, so you've actually done a Zip Locker on a 4th Gen? That's great news!

TT is totally seamless. No noises or abnormal street behaviors. It will spin both rears up on pavement (step on it in the rain) and it'll drift. Bad weather conditions like snow or heavy rain the 4Runner is a whole heck of a lot more surefooted now. No more traction control fighting side to side like crazy to severely limit the wheel spin, now it's only a minor interjection to keep the truck as a whole from being stupid.

Offroad, the TT works very well and now seems to push the truck over obstacles. You can feel the ATRAC helping it out as well, clamping down on the air born wheel and really sending the power to the one on the ground. Soo much better and surefooted. I can't wait to get down to Uwharrie this Sping/Summer to really try it out.

Sounds good! I may look at doing a Detroit or Zip for the front. Cant't really beat the price.

Let me know when you come to Uwharrie. We'll try to meet you out there.

Just wanted to jump in and see now that you have had this setup for a while how things are going...

Curious because I am looking towards the same route and wanted to know how things have been for you. Thanks.

So far I haven't come across any negatives (at least for me). If you're one who wheels the rocks out at Moab a locker may be your better choice. For day to day driving in bad weather and out on the trail it works extremely well and doesn't require any input or thought to make it work.

Over this past winter with the unusually frequent amount of snowfall that we experienced I got to play with it a lot and can certainly say that this is a vast improvement in traction and surefootedness. I haven't experienced any negatives such as the unloading that some people talk about; get the rear end silly (most cases deliberately) and let go of the gas, it straightens right out.

Front locker works well as can be expected for ARB and I'm not going to carry on about it as it's been discussed at lengths by others. I have used this only sparingly (as it should in the front), but it's there in case I'm in a real jam. Like I've said before, I put this in the front as I wanted something rather than nothing.

I see your picture of your T4R in the snow. Your combination is EXACTLY what I was looking to do, but I still had a lot of questions, especially from those people who drive in snow. I have a thread going currently with a question regarding the TrueTrac in combination with the 4th gen traction control. (1) More specifically, any noticeable differences between the TT and the factory open diff in the snow? (2) Have you found you use the ARB air-locker a lot, or is this something that is a rare, or "just in case" use? I am deciding weather or not it's worth the money because most of my 4WD experience is on snow, ice, and sand...I know what it can do and what it can't, but am not sure how best to improve on the open diff w/traction control in the snow and ice. I might just throw in another OEM open diff in the front and get myself a winch, instead...I don't know. I like the idea of a selectable front and rear locker, as well. 3) How do you like those 4.56 gears? A lot better than the 3.73's, especially around town?
