2006 4runner - rear differential replaced after 220,000 km

I replaced my rear differential after 220,000 km. Is this to be expected at this mileage?

How many miles for a rear differential before it needs to be replaced assuming normal driving (city and highway) and no off-roading or towing

no that isnt expected, 500k miles maybe but not at just 220k

all depends on how and where its driven though so you just got unlucky

do you know why it failed? any sign of water intrusion like a bad vent or seals went bad?

I don't think water got in because I don't go off-road and mostly city and highway driving. The odd time we get heavy snow here.

I change the fluid every 100,000 km (60,000 miles). Is that too infrequent for normal driving- no towing and no off-roading

Sounds like a fluke. Diff should almost outlast the life of the rest of the vehicle under normal use. I'm sure there are many T4R's out on the road with 200K+ that have never had the diff plugs even been touched.

How did it die? Broke the gears themselves? What where you doing exactly when it happened? Sometimes they die when driving in a straight line on-road, or sometimes it is caused by the sudden stoppage of a wheel.

well if the vent stops working all you need is hot and cold temperature changes from driving it to collect moisture in there. but if it had water you would have seen milky oil in there

as for oil changes, it should be good for 100k miles minimum between changes but changing it too soon never hurts

I blew mine out at 128k, but I've also been wheeling it like crazy, pulling stuck people out left and right, and I don't know the previous history (bought at 88k)
