2006 4th Gen AC Question....

So looks as if I have the dreaded Evaporator Core problem, truck is a 2006 with 158k miles...

My question is, we have two other cars, live in FL. Will it make matters worse to just use a few cans of something such as

To just make it through the warmer months??? Or will it further damage the system?!

what is the "dreaded evaporator core problem"? is it leaking? if its not leaking, adding more freon wont help anything, if it leaks & is low on freon then adding the correct amount will help temporarily untill it goes low again.

& that freon in the link is not 134a, its some new type that says is compatible with 134a... but you can buy the right 134a anywhere for $5/can or less. use the correct freon if its low, if its another problem you might want to have a professional look at it or repair whatever is wrong with the evap core.

Personally I think you are ok. If you leak strictly 134a, you can refill basic 134a. DO NOT use the stuff with the "stop leak" ingredients. Once that stuff hits oxygen it turns hard causing more problems down the road.

The evaporator is buried deep within the dash assembly, if it develops a leak the entire dash and everything behind it, electrical, AC duct work, dash reinforcement bar..EVERYTHING up to the firewall has to be removed to access the evaporator/heater core housing to replace the evaporator, very labor intensive and if not put back together correctly many issues can be had afterwards, hence the "Dreaded" description!

What you want to do is put some UV Dye in there to see if there is a leak anywhere in the system using a black light to spot a leak because adding more refrigerant is practically useless
