2006 Sport v8 worth the asking price?

Hello!

I am currently in the market for a used 4th gen 4Runner. Long story short, I lost my job about a year back and am now in the market again! I have found this via Craigslist and it has everything that I want on it except that it has the V8. The black 4x4 sport is hard to come by around this area, especially for the price. The timing belt was done about 20k ago, but he wasn't sure on the water pump.

I won't beat around the bush here, I have been pre-approved for $15k thru my local credit union. KBB says PP is about $13,500 and Suggested Retail is $15,500.

I currently have 3 dealerships out there looking for a vehicle for me but both Toyota dealerships say "it's going to be hard to find one at that price with those specifications." Which all I want is:

2005+
Black or Red
4x4
v6
sunroof (doesn't have to have it)

for $15K maximum.

don't limit yourself to the V6...no appreciable reason i have heard. The v-8 is a tank going 200,000+ miles
 
You can't even think about getting serious until you drive it and check it. That's a bunch of miles.

Trust nothing but your own instincts.
 
He said clean title but an accident is on car fax. That's fine, accidents can be anything but if it was ever totalled, stolen, water damage, etc it would have been "totalled out" by insurance and given a salvage title.

If someone love taps you in traffic and cops are involved it will show up on carfare, you just never know the severity of it
 
I'm just asking cause it's about a 45 minute/ferry ride from where I am at right now. The pre-approval wasn't for this vehicle, just a 4runner in general that the dealerships are looking for me.

The title is at the credit union (which come to find out we both use the same).

The only known problem is "the backlight to the climate control is out, which still works, you just can't see it at night". How difficult is that to replace?
 
I am at 109,000 miles on my V8 Sport Edition and plan to own it until I'm locked away in a retirement home (I'm 46, so have about 40 years to go). Bought it new in 2007 and am very impressed with the quality of the entire vehicle.

I have the JBL audio. I went from a 2005 V6 SR5 with base audio to the 2007 V8 SE with JBL and I can vouch for the greatly improved audio quality. When people ride in my truck, they compliment the sound system.

That 4.7L V8 is a glorious engine. A friend of mine who has ridden across TX and back in my 4Runner was so impressed with the engine, he bought a 2006 Sequoia just so he could have a large SUV with that engine. The fuel mpg diff between my former V6 SR5 and the V8 SE was only 1 mpg diff on the hwy, and 2 mpg diff in the city. IMO, the V8 is the way to go.

Do I think that truck in that ad is worth the asking price? Yes. Do I think you should pay that? No...I'd offer $14,200 and top out at $14,500.

Edited to add the light replacement is easy for the climate control. There's a thread on here about replacing those lights with LEDs. While you may not do the LED part, the thread is full of photos showing how to remove the console to get to the lights.

The backlights? Easy. Just a bolt, some clips and a little pulling, oh and aa white harness. All you'll need us a small flathead, a 10mm socket, a racket and some strong but gentle hands.
 
Maybe offer 14k and go from there. He stated OBO so he's obviously open to negotiation. If you offer 14k,expect to meet near the middle around 14,450 or so.

Of course, that's without seeing it. Get the VIN and enter it at Toyota.com/owners

Check the VIN stickers on each panel; hood, doors, lift gate fenders etc. so you can try to sleuth out how bad the accident was.

Maybe ask him to provide a carfax....
 
Actually already did that! Found out some info on it:

The accident was on the left drivers side (headlight replacement at 106k) but it doesn't tell it all.

Few things were done at 106K

Timing belt (no water pump?)
Console HU shorted out and was replaced
Power Steering Flush
4WD service
Spark Plugs

He doesn't have the Carfax but "got the info from the dealer about the accident." But from what I can tell about it from the Toyota website: It was purchased in Huntington Beach, CA then transferred up here to WA in late 2007. Hopefully shouldn't have to worry about rust from the road salt like you do with Eastern US cars.
 
Hmmm. Well, compared to this, is $3-4k worth a seemingly minor accident and 30k miles?

Depends on how important the vehicle history and mileage is to you. And depends on your budget. If I only had ~$14-15k and I had my heart set on a 4Runner, that's not a bad one to get. :)

Yeah, I was just putting it up as a price comparison point. Sort of as a frame of reference so you could see what the same truck with less miles and no accident damage is worth.

So I've been chatting with him a bit before I check it out this weekend. He's only had the 4runner since Feb, and can't find the paperwork from the original owner.

The #1 reason he is getting rid of the vehicle is that he wants a high-performance car. "The 4runner isn't fast enough for me, so I've changed my mind, I really want to get an STI." That just sends up a red flag that maybe he's been hot-rodding it these few months? Is there any way to actually tell if he has when I go to look at it?
 
After your last post about him not having any papers from just last February and him saying it isn't fast enough, I recommend passing on this one. There are too many red flags and too many unknowns.
 
Yeah, I'd pass on this one. If you are serious about it though, ask if you can have it checked out at the dealership/mechanic etc. Have them give it a good go-over.

I just paid a little over $15k, and it has 1/3 of the miles. Granted it's a couple years older, but his price is a little high, IMO.

I'd say 13k with paperwork issues/accident etc.
 
I bought an 06 Sport V8 4X4 with 44k miles on it at the time for 19.5 or so out the door. That was with new BFG AT KO's as well. That was in July I think.

The V6 doesn't have a timing belt. I personally wouldn't trust this guy and wouldn't waste my time.

#1 rule in finding the right vehicle: BE PATIENT! The right rig will come along.
