2006 V8 gets 17 miles on highway?

I drove my 2006 V8 93000 miles from Maryland to NY. I cruised at around 72 on highway I-95. the gas millage was 17 m/g . please advise possibilities and how to check by self? Thank you.

hand calculation is the easiest at the pump. not much more you can do. 17 seems about avg.

Don't feel bad. Those of us with bigger tires are getting 16. With a V6.

But do check your tire pressure. Stock should be 32 PSI I believe? Also cruising 70 or below will yield a bit better MPG. Don't carry more stuff than you need at the time. Not that it likely will help MPG, but have you changed your front & rear differential & transfer case fluids? Maybe a tranny drain & fill, too, being at 93k.

I have an 06 v8 4wd. I get around 22mpg on the freeway going 70(hand calc). I also use non ethanol gas though. I think using e10 I get around 20mpg going 70 on the freeway.

I was only getting 18 mpg at 70 when I first got it(though that was with winter gas). Since then I have changed all drivetrain fluids, ran seafoam through the car, replaced air filter, cleaned maf, and cleaned the throttle body. I still have to clean the injectors, change the tires over to Michelin ltx ms2 tires, and replace the spark plugs before I'm done.

Mine is completely stock with 90k miles.

Cleck the Air filter, clean the MAF/throttle body, and sea foam it first. Those are the cheapest fixes. But definitely check your tire pressure.

I get 20 on the highway doing 65-70 with my '04 v8 4wd with E10 fuel and 17.5 running around town. In the winter I lose about 1.5-2. I have 125k on it and do not nor will I Seafoam my engine unless it gets really dirty or starts running rough.

A well known effect of driving through the van allen belt.

Absolutely kills mpg.

17 mpg is pretty normal on hwy. According to this site it's 18 mpg for highway so your is not too far off.

A V8 getting 17 MPG is normal, as they've already said, and I wouldn't consider it to need fixing. Sometimes, these "fixes" can hurt you. If you damage that MAF you'll be buying a new one and they are sensitive. My advice would be to just drive it as is and enjoy it. Obey the speed limit at all times and you'll be shocked what a difference it'll make in MPGs. 4x4s and especially V8 4x4s do not generally get much better mileage on the highway because they're pushing a lot of air. It's not like a car.

Look at the graph. It makes a huge drop in mpg as you go above 10 mph. This graph is a generic graph for most cars and not specifically for the 4runner of course.

On a recent trip to the east coast and back, I got mine up to 20.1 MPG. In driving around locally since then, it's only dropped to just under 20.

Since getting the V8 in January, I have been very surprised, overall, with how well the MPG has been.

On a long highway drive, driving slow, with little traffic and few hills, I might approach 19. But 17 to 18 is more typical for me. Driving around town lowers that to 15-16, and as little as 14.5 in the winter.

How did you do that? On state highway I cruised around 72 miles/hour and got 17 miles/gal. On the local highwat I cruised around 62 and got 16 miles/gal. My 4runner is 2006 V8 SE model. So far has 94000 miles on it.

I drive a 2003 V8 and I get around 19.5 average according to the console (probably a bit on the high side). I usually use the mid grade fuel but filled it with premium the other day and hit 21.3 running on the highway. Although it didn't stay up since I used it the next couple days at stop and go city driving and went back down to about 19.

I've removed the hydrocarbon filter, cleaned the MAF sensor, cleaned the throttle body and hit it with seafoam when I bought it a few months ago.
