2007 4unner motor issue.

I have a 2007 4runner v8 SR5 full time 4wd. It has 68,000 miles and has been trouble free. It has the following issues; rough idel at cold start up, kinda sounds like its knocking. At lower RPM when you hit the gas it falls on its face. Reduce gas mileage by about 2mpg. There are no dummy lights on. I have had it to the dealership and they said there is no codes so they don't know what is wrong and want to start charging me $60 and hour to figure it out. I changed the oil and put a new air filter and no change, I ran some chevron injector cleaner in it and it seemed to help slighlty while it was in there but right back to the same. I am thinking plugs but have read they should go 100k miles?

Thank you if anyone has experienced similar issues and has an idea where to start.

i would say start by changing the plugs, its a cheap easy process that may help the issue. they may be 100k but it doesnt hurt to change them early
make sure that your air filter is clean/replace

I'd clean the throttle body, Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and Mass Airflow sensor (MAF). Threads are on here for all these. Pretty easy & cheap to do too. You'd be amazed how dirty the throttle body is after 5 years and 70k miles.

No TPS on the electronic TB's any more. It's built into the TB motor. But definately to the other stuff. After you do that, disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to let the computer relearn the TB cleanliness.

Ok went to clean the throttle body, there is engine oil being sucked through the air intake. Why, what the heck is wrong?

Change your plugs. I understand the manual says 100k for the v8 and 30k for the v6 but i think 100k is to long and 30k is to soon. I do mine every 50k and that seems to be about just right based on how the plugs look. When i did mine i noticed the truck ran a bit smoother.

There is a hose running from the top of the left head into the air intake and it looks like it has been blowing oil into it. I have disconnected it for now and taped it off until i can get it to a knowledgeable repair person. And it won't be the dealership since it has been there twice.

That's a normally functioning PCV system. You're going to find oil in the intake manifold and back of the TB. It's meant to go that way so the engine burns off the oil and fuel vapors and you're going to get some liquid oil as a byproduct of the system.

The PCV is on the D/S cylinder head cover. When was the last time this was changed? The oil should be coming in from the PVC valve (not pouring in), and the air line attached to the intake should be sucking air in, not blowing air out.

Some pictures of what you're talking about to clarify things would definately help.

Untape the hose and put it back. That is the ever important vent for the motor and you will get oil vapor into the TB from it. It's part of the emission equipment and clean the MAF and TB like others have told you.

Installed new PCV, the old one was all gunked up. Installed new plugs, cleaned throttle body out. Hooked everything back up. Runs like a top.
