What a mess this has turned to and decided I needed to ask those who know about these more than the tire shop flunky I was talking to today.
OK, first time 4runner owner as of 6 days ago. Picked up a very clean 07 Limited 4.0 V6 4x4 with 140K on it. It has highway tires which won't work for my needs so I began looking for new tires and came across a set of 17" Toyota 4Runner wheels in like new condition for a great price so I bought them. I was a bit surprised when I learned the Limited came with 18" and the other models came with 17" back in 07. Can't say I recall seeing wheel size changing by model like that but figured it wouldn't be an issue. Stopped by the local tire shop to see what some BFG AT's would run in the 17" size.
Next thing I know I am being told the 17" wheels won't work on my Limited because the 17" are not only smaller but they are an 1/2" wider than the 18" wheels and this would cause severe rubbing issues. He went on to say that switching over the TPMS sensors wasn't possible because the 17" wheels used a different TPMS sensor that has a different angle and set to a different psi and wheel diameter than the 18" Limited wheels.
Who would have thought I would run into all this just by going down in wheel size? I bought the 4Runner from the original owner who told me that the TPMS sensors had never been changed as far as he knew and he handed me a pile of receipts for everything that had ever been done to it and I didn't see in any of those receipts. There was no light on in the dash for the 2 hour drive home but a couple days later had a solid TPMS light come on but a few lbs of air in the spare made it go away. Coming back from a long road trip this morning brought up a flashing TPMS light so it's probably a weak battery in one or all of the sensors.
So my question is, am I really going to have a rubbing issue going with the smaller 17" 4Runner Wheels? Next is are the TPMS sensors different for the 18" and the 17" wheels? I had always planned on installing new TPMS sensors when I have the new tires mounted on the 17" wheels and I will be installing them myself as a buddy of mine has a shop with the mounting and balance machines, I just want to be sure I buy the right sensors the first time.
Is there an aftermarket brand that is preferred for the 4Runner or is it best to stick with OEM? Thanks for the advice and info and I look forward to learning more about these 4Runners. Hope y'all have a great day.
