TPMS programming issue on 2016 4R

One of the TPMS went out on my 2016 PRO, and I took it to a local repair shop that assured me they can do it for around $130. They checked the other 3 and said the battery in another one was almost dead so they recommended replacing both sensors. They installed 2 Autel sensors, but could not get those programmed, thought maybe all 4 had to be the same so they replaced the other two as well. Three days later they still could not get the 4R to synch with the sensors, and they gave up. They left the 4 sensors in, and did not charge me anything. Instead of the TPMS light binking and staying on, now it just blinks rapidly, even after driving it for a few days. Figuring that maybe the local shop did not have the correct scanners, I took it to a tire shop. Several of their techs tried for about an hour, using different programmers, and also gave up. Other than going to a dealer, or taping over the dash light, any other ideas? Should I get an Autel scanner and try to do it myself?

I've been getting the OEM Denso sensors for $40 or less each and programming them with an Autel programmer.
Recently found Home Depot sells them, and they have been working flawlessly.

As for the Autel programmers, they work great, but have been found to phone home for their country of origin. So don't install the software, it is not needed.

Buy the OEM sensors from any on-line Toyota dealer. Either install them yourself, or have a tire shop do it for you. Then follow the procedures listed in your owner's manual to "Register" and "Initialize" your sensors. That's what I did. No programmers needed. That was two years ago and no more problems with the TPMS system.

if you are going to be using autel sensors they need to be programmed a specific way (I believe there are three different methods), and then need to be relearned via OBD II into the ECU

here is a video showing how to program if you have the tool, that same tool they show then also can be used to relearn sensors if you do tire swaps etc via OBDII port. some tire shops have issues with TPMS sensor programming since it's not consistent between makes and models. the best solution is to use the toyota OEM sensors for your vehicle and then wake them up/load them to the ECU with your tool. if your tire shop installed the sensors from autel and then tried to learn them to the ECU it will not work, they have to program the sensors first, then install usually, then learn to the computer

If you have or know someone with a Launch handheld full control scanner (I have the 919X). You can program your new tpms sensors (verified with MobileTron sensors). In short you just need to take a good picture of the new tpms sensors front and back before installing, then replace the data values for the unresponsive sensors with the data of the new sensors one at a time. Lastly (with engine running for inflation and deflation only) inflate all tires to 35 PSI (do NOT exceed 40 PSI), deflate all tires to 18 PSI, inflate all tires to preferred daily pressure above or equal to 30PSI. Check the driver dash display, if the tpms light is still illuminated go test drive for 10 miles. All of that last part with inflation/deflation is to bypass the need for a tpms radio tool you'd otherwise need to trigger the new tpms sensors. **Make sure whatever tpms sensors you buy are the correct frequency for your vehicle year and submodel** Good luck!!
