2007 V8 hitch issue

Thanks guys, yes, I am looking around at other dealers. You guys are right though, there are not very many sport V8s out there right now. Thank goodness I did not put a deposit down on the vehicle. The dealer tried to get me to do it, but I told them I did not want to commit to anything I have not seen yet.
I also agree with everybody too, this whole thing does not seem right. In case you folks are wondering, it is Folsom Lake Toyota.

I'm running into similar problems here (in SC). I decided I wanted a SE V8 at the beginning of December and was told that there wasn't one in my region. The dealer said he'd include it in his next order set to arrive in mid-January. The first week of January, I was told it wouldn't be in until mid-February, and now I'm being told that it probably won't be until late March. Its getting frustrating and I've considered contacting other dealers to see what they have to say, but based on what I've read here and seen in the various inventory searches I've done that there just aren't that many of the model I'm interested in moving around.

Maybe the Maryland Carmax dealers hijack them as they come off the ship in Baltimore.

I saw the nautical blue and dark charcoal last weekend at Carmax. So they really do exist.

I left with an immaculate '99 4Runner SR5 that only has 45,000 miles to replace my totaled 2000. I think maybe the Carmax Superstore and Carmax Toyota dealer in Laurel are bigger than my hometown in SC. So they probably have some serious buying power.

The dealer doesn't usually put those additional items on the vehicle...the distributor does (and the dealers themselves often have very little choice in the matter). All Toyota vehicles built in Japan are processed through regional distributors, and this is a holdback from the original days of Toyota's importing into the US. That system has remained in place even though in reality it just isn't necessary anymore. The regional distributors decide (sometimes with very little dealer input) what stock models to order and with what options. In addition, they will often add additional "upsell" items to vehicles as "port options". Dealers may request port options on incoming vehicles or delete them at will, but this is often only done for vehicles ordered though the distributor for special purposes (i.e., the customer "special order").

The limited availability of V8 engines is due to a number of factors including the new Tundra release making a good number of them allocated for that vehicle. In addition, the 4Runner has historically had a fairly small V8 "buy in" -- customers tend to opt for the V6 by a very large percentage margin. The performance difference between the two engines in this vehicle is one of the smaller spreads that is seen on this type and many customers do not perceive a huge difference between the two (and in fact for the most part and for most people, there isn't).

Vehicles are NEVER shipped back to Japan. Ever. It isn't cost-effective for any purpose. Problem vehicles are repaired in port or in a worst-case scenario they can actually be scrapped. I suspect your dealer's allocation isn't sufficient to get the vehicle you want right now so he is stringing you along until he can.

Exactly. This is how they operate on the West Coast. Dealers usually only swap out rims or add leather, one dealer in San Jose lifts Tacomas and put 305s on them. My dealer SF Toyota doesn't change any of the vehicles, they are exactly the way they came from the factory. Some dealers usually add those cheap ProLock alarms too, drilling the dash panels for the override/valet switch and LED--leaving holes if you don't pay for the alarm. Certain regions are different, like South East.

swordfencer,
When I first saw your post about the lack of V8s, I checked buyatoyota.com and there wasn't any. I checked yesterday and V8s are available. V8s are probably in a smaller percentage, but I highly doubt there are none and the ship got turned around.

You're in Sac, and if you don't mind driving down to the Bay Area, Putnam Toyota in Burlingame is a Costco program dealer. I was able to get a better price through SF Toyota without the Costco program.

Thanks Uneek, with the way things are going here in the Sacramento region, I may end up having to go to your area to buy one. I will continue to look around and eventually find one to buy.

And I do hope that it does not come with the goofy 'extras'. I would rather not pay for something that I did not want in the first place.
