200k Transmission Flush

Well...I decided to flush the transmission not knowing if it was ever done from any of the past owners. It definitely was not. Fluid was black and needed to be changed. I have not had any issues shifting before so I know there is no damage done, and she is running smooth as ever. Have you all changed your fluids at high milage?

Not quite that high, but I have done a drain and fill on multiple high mileage BMWs with no issues.

If you've ever been inside an A/T, and I have a little, you understand why you should change the fluid. Clutches in particular are designed to work with fluid, wet clutches, not with fluid and grit in between them.

Yeah, sometimes you have to take a deep breath before you do it, there's so much rumor about A/Ts, but it's a good thing. I don't do flushes, that makes me nervous, but a drain and fill? Absolutely.

I did the fluid exchange 'Timmy the toolman' on Youtube shows for the A750F transmission on my previous 4.0, and the same again for the A343E on this 2.7

No issues with either, apart from the A750F being more hassle with no dipstick!

I used Motul fully synthetic ATF, not WS.

I just did the same thing on my 08 V8 w 238k, I used just over 13 quarts. The temp when adding the last quart was around 130f so just a little out of spec. I would recommend making sure your trans fluid is topped off and full before starting this procedure. It will help when it comes down to adding the last quart.

I ended up being short on fluid when I checked it, because I was stupid and curious and decided to check the level at the fill port when the car was cold and off. Ended up burning myself on the exhaust by rerouting the line from the hood to the fill port when I noticed I let too much out. :doh:

On my 04 V6 I had my mechanic do two drain and fills on the tranny in 2022. It took a total of 6 quarts (3 quarts each visit). Guess only 3 quarts drained each time. Anywho, was going over all my maintenance history and remembered the tranny takes 12 to 13 quarts, so I am going to do two more drain and fills this year. How often do you recommend I do drain and fills as I don't put on a lot of miles each year? Also would I be better off trying to change 12 quarts in one year or would you space it out since my mechanic can only get 3 quarts out each time? Tia!

At most I would do a drain and fill with every oil change. Absent of problems I would tend towards a drain and fill every other engine oil change. Since you don't do a lot of miles I would say once a year.

Not an A/T tech, just IMO. (with a ton of miles on my own cars)

The drain and fill you had done is not the same as what is being referred to in this thread it is not a complete fluid change . The TOTAL system fluid replacement will be somewhere around 13 quarts. Look at the video from the tool man referred to above.
