I have a 2014 trail edition too and I have the same problem .I also have a noise coming from my sunroof as well that s driving me crazy.:frusty

Mine did rattle softly for a while. So I stopped putting sunglasses around shift knob, tightened the shift knob, and drove a couple miles in 4HI with about 1/2mi in 4LO before going back to 2HI. I still see the knob vibrate a bit when starting and going over bumps, but the rattle is gone.

I'll get a little rattle from time to time but literally all it is is a hairbrush leaning against the shifter. Due to the shifters vibration, it makes anything touch it make a rattling noise. Maybe that's not the problem, just sharing my experiences with ya
I had the same problem with my FJ, and now again with my Runner. There are not enough places to put things, so invariably a pair of sunglasses, a USB power cord, boat keys or something else always ends up against the shifter, and then I get a very annoying buzzing/rattling/vibration thing happening.
Just move the offending item and the problem is solved!
Not saying this is the same problem with yours, but worth mentioning in case this simple solution will work for you too.

No rattles here on mine. Good thing, squeaks and rattles drive me nuts.

Yea my '10 trail rattles like everyone else says, not much room or compartements for "stuff", it ends up near the transfer case shift knob and rattles. I haven't noticed it yet on the '15 TEP... probably only a matter of time. It is quite annoying as well.

Not much you can do about it, that's sorta the nature of a manually actuated transfer case. The shifter is gonna vibrate/move around and anything close to that may rattle as a result (i.e. sunglasses USB cable ect.)
Now if there was rattling from the shifter itself or the trim panels, that might be a concern.

Agreed, I had a passenger this week say "hey your shifter is moving and suggested I should take it in to Toyota to look at". I had to explain that that is one of the main reason I bought the truck!

I have had that discussion with a few folks on mine already, including on t4r.org. On anything that is mechanical in nature, for better or worse, there is going to be feedback. Drive an old car without power steering, the wheel talks to you. Some people like that, some could care less. Me? The mechanical transfer case shifter is why I have the trail, or a least a good part of the reason.
yah , i dont have any clutter in my center console yet as its new for me , but when i grab the shifter and pull it slightly over when driving the vibration goes away . i was just wonder if a TSB was listed for a fix .
if it goes away in 4H can i just drive it all the time in 4H? if so then that may be the fix for me .

It should not rattle unless something is touching it.
Mine rattles like crazy if I put something in the boot area near it.. Just put your hand on it and you will feel the vibration.. However, it should not be touching anything normally.
If you have a rattle with nothing sitting in the boot area.. take it to the dealer or pull the console and look for the issue.

I had a rattle that would not go away. It was something in the actual knob. If you buy some plastic spudgers online, the top piece with the shift pattern will pop off (mine is 4.5 years old so the glue probably has rotted some). The clips that keep it in place are hard plastic --one broke taking it apart, but the break was clean so it glues easily back into place. Anyway, the troublemaker is out and the rattle is gone.

[MENTION=265943]samszelepka[/MENTION] you and I had the same issue. This rattle drove me nuts for a while and finally found it was the shift knob itself. Had the same cruddy glue chunks in the top rattling. Finally, the issue is gone! Feels like a new truck again.
