I'm concerned. You said you are a photographer, yet there is a distinct lack of pictures in your posts. So what do you really do? Looking forward to your build :cheers:

To my defense, I've only had the thing for a few weeks, and haven't shot 1 thing on my SLR (due to its soccer mom appearance :loco:.) BUT, I totally agree, and will put a bit more effort into the photos Thanks for the callout

SLIDER BUILD
Time to get some sliders on. It was VERY difficult to find metal on a Saturday. Let me tell you

Loading up

17 feet of leftover 2x4 tube steel + some scraps

Cut to about 7 feet each side with some leftover

Wanted to boatside the sliders, but didn't want them to look bent up, so we mitered the long edge to around a 35 degree angle. This cut took a while.

Grinding out to a sharp edge. We saved the bend, so it looked pro.

With the flat stock

Welding downhill longways

weld and slider 2 cut

Fit test

Push outs back to 90 degrees

AND THEN I HAD TO LEAVE. I know the suspense is killing me too. Ill post more pics soon!

Ah I was gonna guess 5DIV! Either way, b-e-a-uuuuuutiful photos man. Pumped to see where this build will go. Keep it up!

Those general grabber 285/70/17's are no joke. Put them on mine with a fender liner mod and they crush the snow/ ice in the NE. Crushed highways at 65 comfortably with the wife and kids in the truck with about 4-6 inches of crap on the road this past weekend. Their only draw back is the is hard to have fun sliding around with them in empty parking lots douching around without 4 wheel.

I love how those tires and wheels sit. I'm trying to decide on a wheel/tire package at the moment for my new 4Runner. What are the specs on those wheels you have those Grabbers on? Backspace/offset?

those are the Method Standards. -12 offset, 8 wide. yes i have the grabber AT2s on there. love them:jump:

I can only find the Method Standard wheel in 17x8.5 with 0mm offset and 4.75" backspacing and 17x9 with -12mm offset and 4.5" backspacing. Am I missing something? 6x5.5/6x139 is the right bolt pattern right?

My apologies. I went back to my order and yes, I got the 17x9 with -12mm offset set. You may need to cut the front fender slightly (about an inch). Hope that helps!

SO,
Long story short, had a shoot with GoPro happening with the rooftop tent... on... Problem was, I was not into having the stock racks holding the weight, and had a weekend to get this F*CKER on. It was a ton of work, and a bit of a doghouse with the ol' ball and chain.

So it begins - more fab for ya

Realized that once I pulled the stock racks off, there were no rails! This was a problem, so we grabbed some 1/4 inch strap that fit perfectly. All scrap steel by the way. Stoked.

Measured to where I wanted them to land.. this was longer than we expected, so yes, we welded studs to the roof..

Needed to cut the original studs down, since this is much more low profile than OEM.

Bolted in and fit PERFECT. We left the weather stripping in as a cushion.

Needed to fill in the space from the bottom of the stock rail holster to the new rail. Made a (should I say quick?.. it wasn't.) set of spacers out of 1" steel plate. These needed to be drilled and ground down. Tacked em to a plate, and started grinding.

So we didn't shoot a ton of pics of the entire build (it was an all nighter and we were over it) but you can see here the standoffs - these were mitered at a 45 for a stylish look. And in between these pics, the crossbars were added - 1.5"x1.5" tube steel. We cut through the standoffs and plated the ends, welded up and ground em down- they look like one piece of steel.

Next was the roof tack.. Man - welding/grinding on a 16 body is scary as hell. :crybaby: but needed to happen for future plans.

At this point its 7:30 AM and we were FRIED. We tacked to whole frame together on the car, (also scary as hell) took it down and threw a coat of paint on. (its Sunday by the way, and I needed to be in Santa Cruz on Monday ready to shoot.) I hit the hay until 11 AM and got up to throw it on the rig. I was not stoked. BUT we lifted it on with our "lift" and the thing literally bolted on with absolutely no issues - not even a push or pull. it was nuts.

everything worked out! Still catching up on sleep though. :violin:

I'll post some of the actual rack as soon as I can!



Next is front bumper. All fabbed, no cookie cutter :drum:
