bang up job by the QC department on those new fancy trucks.

After James Bearing bought a Chevrolet Colorado, he noticed a discrepancy between the truck's spec sheet and the truck's tachometer: Chevrolet said 3.6-liter V6 in the little pickup produces 305 horsepower at 6,800 rpm, but the tachometer indicates a redline at 6,500 rpm. So either he wasn't making as much power as he was promised, or the tachometer display was incorrect. Bearing said he asked Chevy about it but got no response.

Until now. A General Motors spokesman said the rev limiter is indeed set for 6,800 rpm, but the tach graphics "are slightly off" in the Colorado and the GMC Canyon, and submitted an SAE horsepower certification to back him up. If you're wondering how such a thing got past quality control... well, let's just say you're not alone. GM is going to fix "the graphics on future trucks," which makes it sound like Bearing will just have to learn to live with the indicated redline he's got. He could always pretend he's driving a sleeper, with four more ponies waiting to be unlocked in the danger zone for those who dare.

Is it a mistake? Yes. An important one? Not really. Not like the frame on my '03 4Runner that rusted into oblivion.

totally agree. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a huge deal. The computer will prevent any over-revving. Does suck if the operator uses the tach to shift (can't see why one would). I sat in a Colorado in an auto show the other day. It was terrible, cheap plastic inside. I wanted to like it but walked not liking it at all. Of course, I'm not a pickup guy, but a Tacoma certainly looked/felt better put together.

Any pics of the Sport Trim? So far I've only seen the pics of the limited and Off Road trims. I'd like to see the Sport and SR5.

My favorite so far is the Limited trim but I'd imagine the Sport will look similar. Maybe its just the tan color or the extended cab, but I am not a fan of how the Off Road looks.

I like it. The current one is OK, but I've never been able to get over my dislike for how the wheel wells are "peaked" towards the back. Looks like they corrected that for 2016.

On edit: I see the new Tacoma has the trailer wiring plug relocated to an easier to access location. Good on them. Too bad for my 4runner... lol

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma pick-up is reportedly powered by a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine and a 3.5-liter Atkinson cycle V6 paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. A shift-stick option for the manual transmission is only offered with the V6 nets. V6 has the D4-S technology, which allows switching from port injection under low engine loads and direct injection systems at higher rpms.


A previous report from NY Daily News noted that the 2016 Toyota Tacoma pick-up's price ranges from $21,000 to $30,000 subject to trim selections.

Apparently the goal of the dual port + direct injection is to prevent carbon buildup in the intake manifold -- something which has been a problem on other DI gas engines.

well its was speculated that the port would be for low and DI for high, but the article I quoted just kinda confirmed it.

That is part of its purpose. The other part of the purpose is to prevent carbon buildup which has been a problem for other manufacturers.

The current 4Runner engine specs:

270 hp @ 5600 rpm; 278 lb.-ft. @ 4400

Too bad it is down a little on torque and power peaks are a bit higher in RPM -- not what you want for a truck engine.

On the other hand, if it improves fuel economy that would be welcome. Also, the 6-speed transmission might make up for some of the performance loss due to lower low-rpm power.

well you do have to realize they are getting the same hp and just about 17 ft lbs less in an engine that is .5 liters smaller.

I imagine these numbers will improve after a few years of production.
