I wish that Toyota would release a video comparing frame strength b/w its frame and competitors to dispel the myth.

Question: What is a "proper" frame strength? What is a proper frame rigidity? What is the proper frame flex needed for a decent ride? What are the proper materials needed to make a perfect frame? How does manufacturing process and material cost factor into the frame strength?

My point is as consumers, we would not know a "proper" frame strength if it came up and tapped us on the shoulder. It's easy to make something thicker or lighter or stiffer or stronger or weaker or bigger or smaller. It's NOT easy to make something that works perfect for many different applications and is reliable and durable. That "proper" frame strength might not be the strongest but the best for the application.

I understand all that...and have stated such earlier this thread. However, the previous Taco was NOT known for its frame strength as many have observed flexing of the frame with minimal road undulation.

With competitors coming out boasting about boxed frame, Toyota should address it IMHO. Go to a Toyota dealership and see how Toyota advertises its huge disc brakes and frame of the Tundra (even tho Tundra frame is C-based).

It does not always have to have a scientific reason to advertise something...more than anything, advertisements (even bias ones) are made to settle potential buyers' minds...esp you know that every competitor will shit on Tacoma's frame. Frame is very important to truck buyers...probably more so than you think.

Thai understood. If I were Toyota I would just keep showing the video of the Toyota that Top Gear did trying to kill a truck. Seriously.

Agree 100%...they should just buy rights of that video! That video is worth whatever Top Gear charges. Classic Toyota quality on film.

Everybody wants a boxed frame. That will solve all the problems.

Well, I had a boxed frame on a 2012 F150 that I once owned. In fact, it was the thickest frame you could get on a F150 (crew cab, 6.5' bed, max tow package, rated to tow 11k). I think most of us saw that video of the F150 going over the speed bumps with the bed barely shaking then the Tundra going over the same course but the bed was moving all over. I know I watched it, definitely a selling point right? Well, Ford must've not tested my truck because the bed on my F150 danced harder than the Tundra. I honestly didn't notice it the day, maybe even the whole first week I owned it. Then driving to work one day, I went through one of many bad spots on the way while I happen to glance in the mirror. It honestly looked like the rear section of the bed wasn't bolted. That night, I crawed under there and checked all the bolts, all were tight. Then I thought, maybe it's just the way the mirrors made it look. So I had a buddy drive it while I followed in his truck. I couldn't believe what I saw. Clearly something was wrong.

I had Ford check it out too. While they said they could see the bed move, it was normal. Even slow, offroad conditions I could clearly see the bed move due to all the frame flex. Having owned a couple older Ford pickups, frame flex wasn't anything new to me but I was under the impression that this truck wouldn't do it.

So, my experience was that, the boxed frame did very little to curb frame flex. Going back to what someone posted, there are trade offs when designing/building a frame. Clearly, Ford was concerned with weight so while it was boxed, it was still thin. Probably why they stick with a C-channel frame for the Super Duty trucks. The stoutest frame I have witnessed in a pickup truck is on the GM heavy duty trucks. Not only is it boxed but it's thick and the beds don't seem to move at all. Although, they are heavy, ride rough, and don't get very good mpg. Another trade off.

Never understood the bed bounce/frame flex marketing bullshit. Stiffness != strength. Ever ride a hard tail aluminum mountain bike versus a chromo or titanium? Which has the better ride and which is stronger (not counting welding techniques)? Ever see the frame flex in a Unimog?

Pretty sure the Taco has a C channel rear section to make up for the leaf suspension ride characteristics.

While I absolutely love that video and it is totally one of my favorites. It is great advertising for a 1988 diesel Hilux, not a Tacoma.

The current generation Hilux and Tacoma are on two separate frames (before the introduction of the Tacoma, the two vehicles split into separate platforms. The Hilux retained it's rugged work-ready frame, while the new Tacoma adopted a frame more tuned for ride quality, handling, comfort, and safety) and thus it is hard to believe even a first gen Tacoma would survive that kind of abuse, let alone a second or third gen. So far the 3rd gen Tacoma seems to be a slightly updated J150 platform (much in the way the J150 is a slightly updated J120 platform rather than any significant redesign.)

I'm still not convinced that this 3rd gen Tacoma is anymore more than a new body bolted on the existing J150 platform. So far all the data just seems to indicate they updated the cab and bed and it still rides on essentially a J150 platform from the previous generation. It wouldn't shock me if everything from the cab down besides the engine and transmission were the same or barely different than the current 2nd gen Tacoma equipment.

Who cares? It's a Toyota taking the abuse. People don't care and are easily manipulated. If you have Netflix watch "Brain Games" or "Head Games." I watched an episode last night and they took lemon jello, colored it red and fed it to several people. Every one of them said it tasted like berry or cherry. Why? Because it was red. It was lemon jello....

All what data? And does it matter? You'll never know unless someone cuts up complete frames from Gen 2 and Gen 3 and does metallurgical testing on every single part of that frame and at the end of the day does it matter? No, because the only place it matters is in people's minds.

I thought I ended this frame discussion several pages ago when I proved, unless you know every single thing about the design, material spec and manufacturing process of these frames you are just pissing in the wind.

Think about it.
