excuse the random train of thoughts, I am just writing as each item comes to mind ...
overall its a lot quieter than my 2014 4runner LE with oem rims/tires.
now granted my LE has body mounts squeaks since about 6-9 months into ownership, which I've lived with (most of the time its noticeable when slowly going over bumps).
soaks up bumps a lot better than the 4runner.
entune is a hell of lot snappier, most common customer customizations can be done in the head unit app (drivers settings), door locks, lights as an example.
seat belt chime still is techstream though.
wind noise doing 70-75 is still there but a lot more muted than our 2012 Tacoma, engine noise is more muted. this may be due to better insulation/sound deadening and thicker glass than our 2012.
placement of control are not necessarily better, just tweaked. I hate the location of the start button and 4wd knob. (btw push to start is standard on trd models and up)
interior materials are better, less hard plastic (but its not gone).
JBL sound system is a tad better, but downside, 2/3 passenger side rear storage is taken up by the sub.
tailgate hydraulic lowering (how they did this implementing it via mechanical is very nice).
tailgate thickness is something I have to get use to when closing, use to the 2012 thinness.
from what I have heard, a lot of the 2015 mods work on the 2016, supposedly same mount points (sliders, lift kits, etc... verify as I am not 100% sure on what does/doesn't fit as plug and play)
metal-tech and toyotec have concept bumpers already fabbed on the new front end. toyotec even has demo lifted and fitted with 33" already with a bumpter.
arb has a teaser pic of a bumper that looks like a 2015 but slimmer.
looks like rims are the same as the 2nd gens 4.5/5.5 backspace with 25 or 30mm offset on 6x5.5 139.7 pcd
different rim sizes 16/17/18, 17 on sports / 18 on limiteds, 16 on all the rest. (edit : 17 came with firestone dest. LE2, off road 16 came with wranglers)
aftermarket covers will not fit from 2nd gens, that thicker tailgate screws up everything.
oem 3 piece hard cover is nice if you need one now and want to use in conjunction with the locking tailgate. ive seen on a limited, glad I skipped it and waiting for an access original roll up cover. (edit : be mindful as the side rails have lock pins sticking out. the bed rail system would have to be swapped out for a non oem tri-fold bed rail cover)
seats are the same as the 2nd gens, just a tad better overall but no big improvement.
head room will be an issue for those that are long in the torso compared to long in the legs.
moonroof comes as standard depending on the factory options so be mindful.
those are my impressions from when the warden actually lets me drive it (on the 2012 she would make me drive when we went out, now she wont let me at all).
edit : forgot to add, the 4runner PTS fob will not work on the 2016 Tacoma PTS. tried and it will not learn the 4runner fob either using the new procedure or the classic procedure.
was hoping I would only have to carry 1 fob for both vehicles.
