Lots of "speculation" going on, even by the authors own admission. Me thinks the '17 4R will be the last of the Gen 5's with the tried and true 4.0/5-speed combo....time will tell. :thumb:

My thoughts exactly. Read half, scanned last half - it was like seeing a fat girl in a short skirt; yuck.
I'm thinking I will wait another year before pulling the trigger on a new T4R. If it leaks that there will be a 6th Gen when the 18's are released there may be deeper discounts on the 17's. Other than mior gripes about color options I have no problem buying a 5th gen. I'm not sure what the next gen will offer that will be worth waiting for. Now if the 6th gen IS too irresistible then I'll go that way. I'm pretty confident that I'll get another year out of my 02, even with >265k miles.

And? When the introduced the 2016 Tacoma they did not release a TRD Pro version that year either. They waited until 2017 to introduce a TRD Pro Taco. If they come out with the 6th gen 4Runner in 2018 they are likely to make a TRD Pro 4R in 2019. They are making too much money on the TRD Pro's not to continue it in the 6th gen models.
Saw this thread and the speculation on the next redesign. This is entirely anecdotal, but should rest a few minds at east that no, the 4Runner doesn't have to go away to comply (the standards were set so that this sort of thing doesn't have to happen).
The model (VOLPE) used by NHTSA to predict how manufacturers might comply with CAFE standards by analyzing their entire fleet of vehicles in the cheapest way possible. The model uses manufacturer-supplied inputs, and the model outputs vehicle-by-vehicle "estimates" based on available tech profiles. It's only a model... it's obviously impossible to predict the future, let alone the automaker's compliance strategy.
Below are the big technology changes it suggests for the 2018 4wd 4Runner.
I would (at least) say it's safe to assume 2018 is a redesign year and it will shed a little bit of weight and get a 6 speed auto. The model doesn't really suggest flat out engine changes, but I thin it's safe to say something less thirsty will be used. Otherwise, I doubt the 4Runner is going anywhere - Toyota has no problem complying with the standard. Remember to thank your neighbor who owns a Prius, they make it possible for the 4Runner to exist

- MSRP increase by $1,800 (very unlikely, the model usually far overestimates $$)
- 300 pound curb weight decrease
- Cylinder deactivation (?)

It's the color of sadness.
I actually call that color "institutional gray". It's the same color as prison, or the welfare office, or detention hall, or a dingy factory. If 1974 had a color, this would be it.
With that being said I do love that Toyota comes out with unique colors. I almost bought an FJ Cruiser in Quicksand but they wouldn't budge on the price and my Trail edition cost about 1k more. Cavalry Blue is pretty boss too.
My Dad loves this color. To each his own. I guess I just spent a lot of time in detention lol

The general consensus is that its a prototype, likely built off of a trail. We wont be seeing one any time soon :noidea:
