2018 TRD Off Road Premium MPG

So I just picked up my 2018 TRD Off Road Premium 3 weeks ago, and its been really bugging me that I've only been getting 13 mpg. I've driven 1200 so far and 1000 of them have been mainly city miles. I should be getting at least 17... right?!?!?!

Has anyone experienced such bad gas mileage with their new 4runner??

What am I doing wrong?

My lifted TE with 285 Destination MTs gets about 13.

Fuel mileage is highly dependent on driving style. City driving is also bad for mileage as it is usually a lot of start and stop driving.
Your vehicle is just past the break-in mileage, as specified in the owners manual, so you should begin to see it improve as you put on more miles.

I have a 17 Off road and I average around 14-15ish from my daily 20 mile commute to and from work on the 405 freeway. Thats with bigger 275/70/17 tires though and that number changes depending on how aggressive I drive. I track everything with the ROAD TRIP app on iOS

I have a 17 OR stock for now and get 20 on my commute from Idyllwild ca to Irvine ca a few times a week and we average between 18-19 doing anything else.

Drove it fully loaded and pulling my little 12' bass boat that was loaded with camping stuff as well AND did some wheeling on the trip and still got above 16 MPG.

13 seems really low.

I average 15mpg in my 2016 with a 3 inch lift and 275/70/18's on some XD wheels. I was surprised I didn't get 17ish also.

Check your tire pressure. I was getting the same results with the recommended 32PSI. I added an additional 3PSI and it made a world of a difference. I am now getting closer to 19-21 with gentle mixed driving.

You live in Orange County - traffic there sucks. The only way you'll see 17mpg in the city is to slowly depress the gas pedal while pulling away from lights, and in traffic. Of course you'll be moving so slowly that you'll be getting flipped off and cutoff, at the same time.

There's a whole thread or two on this topic. Just like the last guy who posted similar, he would let his 4Runner warm up for at least 10 minutes every morning.

you should be getting at least 15. try feathering the throttle at least for a tank of gas to see how that goes. I get 15.6 in CA traffic mixed. My friend gets 23 on highway, same TRDORP.

EPA estimates are best case scenario, not worst case.

Stop and go traffic and an aggressive driving style will translate to 13mpg pretty quick.

I just returned from a couple of trips which combined stop and go traffic, off-roading and 70 mph cruise control freeway runs.

The most recent trip, which included all of these, netted a 20.5 mpg.

Break in will help, but if you drive it fast and hard, you'll get crappy mileage.

I know, I had the same reaction when I first got my 2018 ORP...

Try to take a little more Zen reaction to traffic and watch the mpg climb quickly. :lookout:

Read one of the 5k threads on MPG and you should get a good feel on how your Runner should progress.

Stop and go is an mpg killer. I’m in LA and averaging about 15 per tank of gas. Saw over 20 when I drove to Vegas on wide open highway. Tire pressure and load are special considerations but you also sacrifice some mpg on the coolness factor alone. [emoji51]

Just hit 900 miles.
Should keep going up.

2017 TRD Off Road. 2.5" Toytec lift, SSO front bumper and Smittybilt winch. Have 7,000 since new and have never got less that 18.5 so far and as high as 21. Stock size tires.

Our 17' took at least 2k miles for the fuel mileage to improve.
