You are looking at the kind of junk that belongs on a Highlander.........I can't WAIT to see how Toyota ruins the next Gen 4Runner with more Nanny State crap and loses sight of why Most of us buy the last Worthy SUV. TOYOTA........NO to the 3.5........NO to more ''Automatic'' Babysitting hardware.......NO to a more ''Soccer Mom'' Truck. Enhance the Off-Road capability and balance it with comfort features but don't ''Wimp'' it out.....leave that for the RAV 4 crowd.

You do know a lot of the "nanny state crap" is becoming mandated, right? Blame all the people that don't know how to drive if you'd like, but progress isn't a bad thing.
Radar cruise control is fantastic. Toyota did pick a somewhat strange combination, leaving out blind spot in favor of lane departure, but still... radar cruise is straight dope.
You can turn it all off. Or just never buy a new car again. The 4Runner is one of the least "nanny state crap" vehicles on the market as of right now.
Do you get mad about backup cameras too?

How many 4R owners do you think are actually on this forum and of those how many cite off road capability as the primary reason for their purchase? Probably a small sample of the entire market. Toyota wants to sell more vehicles (not target niche crowds), and they aren't going to do that with 10-year old tech. They've done a pretty good job so far if you ask me. I actually am excited to see what they come up with for the next gen 4R.

I remember hearing someone was telling me that Toyota was trying to keep the 4runner different from all their other vehicle, but apparently they cave in and make it all the same. I'm really glad I bought mine in 2018 without all those sensor crap. It just sounds like more problems lol.

Personally I hate that stuff, it's distracting me while driving. Suddenly the car decides to do something on it's own.

Crap is the operative word. They charge you more money for something that can cripple your car when it breaks, then charge you to fix it. Most of it doesn't work correctly or is distracting. It took the auto industry 40 years to make the climate control work correctly. What makes anyone believe we will have Level 5 autonomous vehicles in 5 years?
Not exactly, I would permanently disable the PCS and LDA if possible. You can turn off LDA and PCS, but I don't know of a way to turn off the radar part of the Cruise Control.
The LDA seems to stay off once disabled.
The PCS disable is a one time shot and resets when you restart the car.
You can reduce the range of the cruise control, but not turn it off. BTW credit where credit is due, it works pretty well.
The PCS doesn't work all the time. I tested it on an unsuspecting bicyclist and it didn't do crap. OK I didn't really run him over but it did nothing to alert me. They should not have put that in there it's crap it gives in experienced drivers a false sense of security which in turn encourages them to not pay attention.

Agreed, but engineering and the safety Nazi's won over design team. The location and obstructions are critical with sensor placement and usage. The nanny cam on the windshield is ugly too.
The rules of robots are:
- A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
- A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings , except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
- A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.
We seem to forget about number 2, good thing this is not a robot... yet.

I think if it saves just one life, it did it's job. Doesn't need to work perfectly; almost nothing does.
I do agree that life is precious and we should enable those that want to live, should get that opportunity. Also true, it might save lives someday and some of the safety improvements are very good (seat belts).
However, I will respectfully disagree that it needs to work better. This feature is just not baked enough to say it won't take a life as well. Just read the "Limitations of the pre-collision system" on pg 255.
Look at this jewel from the owner's manual.
It is has non-deterministic behavior, and that is bad when it comes to saving lives.
Elevator controls have deterministic behavior. This disclaimer would make me take the stairs.
This elevator may not employ the rapid decent inhibitor if two or more floors below the current position are selected.
When air bags came out they were the greatest things since wheel and they have killed and still kill children. Also killed people because they thought they didn't need seat belts.
The warning was prophetic: 242 deaths — many of them children or small women — are blamed on air bags. Deaths peaked in 1997, when 53 people — including 31 children — were killed.
It is now 25+ years later and the number of deaths has greatly reduced; however, injuries are still common and we still had a massive airbag recall after all these years.
What I'm saying is it takes time to work it out. Personally I don't want to be part of the beta testing in my car or other cars around me.
BTW the owner's manual says that if you mash the gas it will override the PCS. So if you really want to run over the ped you can, good to know that it's fool proof.

Word is the next gen 4Runner will be based on the same platform as the next Tundra so it will get bigger....and more complex. I would rather the 4Runner be a Truck like the FJ than devolve into a bigger Highlander. At least it looks like it will be BOF and that's a good thing. Turbo V-6 will be the likely power plant....no V-8's There is talk of the LandCruiser reverting back into a Off-Road worthy Truck and letting a different model be the over priced Land Yacht! Toyota are moving Tacoma production to Mexico......I hope 4Runner remains a Tahara built vehicle, or I won't be buying Toyota.
