Wondering about Toyota Safety Sense-P off road, and also on modified vehicles.

Can you turn off pre-collision off road (ie wouldnt you have to?).

Also, are there any conflicts or concerns with modifying susension, etc?

It *should* assuming it's the same as the Taco - apply brakes if it detects a collision. It does not have any steering input. Just brakes and alarms. It does remove the panic braking boost that current 4Runners have and replace with a dynamic brake boost so it may add more braking force while you're also pressing the brake to keep you from hitting something. Most likely it is totally disabled in 4lo. Whoever gets the first one should try a simple test with a cardboard box in the road to see how and when it brakes.

If you put a "leveled" suspension on that is not level - I would expect it to potentially not be aimed correctly and it may run into some issues. I don't know what the field of view is like. Subarus eyesight is supposedly very sensitive to this. I have never heard of any issues with Toyota's system. My parents '19 tacoma has no issues with a load in the bed that significantly changes the angle like a leveling kit would. So I'd guess it's probably not an issue, but who knows?

I hate the pre-collision system on my Tacoma and you can turn it off.

Toyota makes you sign a waiver when you lift the vehicle, put on different tires or on a different grill that it didn't come with, etc. You can check over on Tacomaworld on this.
 
Just wondering what the collective opinion on TSS-P is for off road driving? I'm mainly on old logging roads and farm roads in 4hi. Wondering if long grass in the middle of the two track or bushes sticking out from the edge would activate braking?

I understand it can be turned off each time I drive in those conditions but maybe I would buy a used 2017-2018 instead of new.

I have searched but not found much in the way of discussing how intrusive the system is or isn't.

I would definitely be a believer in it if there was good evidence it helps with car deer collisions.

I welcome any first hand reports.

It is radar and camera-based so it is looking for fairly solid objects. I drove mine on an old farm road with tall grass blocking parts of the road and it did not intervene. It is not designed to prevent animal collisions but it may recognize a slow-moving deer as a pedestrian. It is deactivated in 4-Lo but still active in 4-hi even though it's easy enough to turn off.

I've driven mine offroad a bit...some faster forest roads, some very rocky/flexy areas, and stuff in between. It hasn't gone off or warned for any of it. But the manual does say it recommends during the system off during "sporty or offroad driving".

It's easy to disable via the center screen menu if/when you want to. You can also adjust the sensitivity in the same menu.

In regular street driving it's behaved like two other similar systems I've had in other cars (Mazda6 and Golf R). It really only warns me when either I'm closing on a car that's stopping too fast and haven't started applying the brakes, or when a car is turning right off a fairly fast road and I've determined I don't need to slow for it. It'll flash a red BRAKE warning in the center display, but I've not had it apply the brakes.

Generally these systems will change when/how aggressively they act based on what they detect you doing. If you're still on the gas and haven't let off or started applying the brakes, they'll warn sooner because they assume you're not paying attention. If you left off the gas and/or start applying the brakes the car knows you probably see what's going on and waits a bit longer before it tries to warn or intervene.

Frankly, having had 3 cars with these systems over the past 5 years, I find them helpful and useful from a safety perspective. If you're not driving like a jackass and weaving through traffic or tailgating people aggressively they almost never get triggered in normal driving. I've had them snap me out of inattention a handful of times, however, for which I was thankful.

I have had it disabled as part of turning traction control off (which you can do with a 3 second or so hold of the traction control button while stopped), but you can only adjust sensitivity of the system in regular rear wheel drive or 4 hi driving.

Even with traction control off, it will still detect that you may hit something. It just won't apply the brakes for you.

Go here to Toyota Owners site and download the Owners manual. It's all covered in section 4-5 starting on page 246.

It's simply a matter of going into the settings menu in the cluster display, choosing PCS (Pre-Collision System) and turning it off.
