I recently bought an '87 4x4 pickup, showing 317,000 miles. It's all stock, except for a 3" body lift and 33x12.50 tires, and I plan to drive it until my 4Runner is finished. Obviously, this is a carbed engine, and yesterday it acted up on the interstate. I was in 5th gear running an indicated 68-70mph, (which is probably closer to 75-78) at around 2600rpm. It began to lose power and felt "flat", or lean. I depressed the clutch, and the engine returned to idle speed. I down shifted, (by now I was at an indicated 55 mph), and it still ran rough, acting like it didn't want to run under load. I got to my destination, took a look under the hood and everything looked okay. When I went home, I drove it a bit more slowly and it never missed a beat. I got on it merging onto interstate, and never had an issue. I'm wondering if it's fuel related. It feels like a bad fuel filter, or a lack of fuel. I also wondered if the cap could be an issue. Every time I fill it up, I hear that whoosh as the cap is removed and breaks vacuum. It's been so long since I drove anything with a carb, I'm confused. Do you guys think I'm headed in the right direction, or is it more likely to be ignition/timing? Thanks for any ideas you may have!
