22re needs to be replaced... Help

My 1987 T4R with only 190k miles is in need of it's 2nd engine. The original made it to just 180k. PO owner went the cheap route and used the $999 shop in "Moreno Valley" and this one only made it 8,000 miles!!! Yes, JUNK!

So now I'm left to pick up the pieces and do it right.

Can ya'll recommend a reputable place to either buy a complete 22re and/or a trustworthy shop to install. Will travel south as far as San Diego and as far north as Fresno.

Also looking for help on what the MUST AVOID or MUST HAVE items are during this process.

Nice and clean runner!
I have no recommendation (long story) for installer. However, some people made special mention of a Toyota Master Mechanic in Escondido, San Diego County, who hot rodded a Supra. Forgot his name but he must know his Toyota's

The owner of the shop that rebuilt my 22RE also knows his 22RE very well. However, from my experience his crew did sloppy work; missing many minor things. Covered under warranty but wasted my time.
The fuel injector ground control wires near intake were found broken/intermittent after I picked up vehicle.
Clutch fork rubber boot was missing after rebuild.
My main bearing seal was leaking after rebuild,
Valve cover gasket leak was never fixed 2 years after the rebuild. I'll correct that myself.


Whoever ends up doing our rebuilt, trust them but verify. Double-check quality of their work.

Nice looking truck! If you have a large budget and don't want to deal with the downtime or questionable work by someone else check out 22reperformance. They sell complete motors from stock to built, I was looking into it a while ago when considering if I should save or just do the rebuild myself when the time comes

This guy Mark Chefyota4x4 is a toyota pro!! He has done some recent 22re swaps for people. I'd send him a message on instagram..he's big on that.

I've also heard good things about the truck shop in San Diego. They specialize in toyotas.

So we've got your rig over at the shop. It rolled in on the tow truck, I thought they were taking mine!

Parked my rig next to yours and they're really similar! Those $999 shops are a joke, sorry about the knocking and the smoking from the tailpipe. You're in good hands now!

PS: Marlin crawler makes a great set of shifter bushings!
