22RE wont idle below 1000 RPM

Went to check my timing. At start up the truck idles high and then settles at 1000 RPM. I tried adjusting the idle but with the screw all the way in, it wont go below 1000 RPM. Do I have a vacuum leak or is something else the cause? How many turns should I have left after I reach 750? I performed a search but nothing came back.

After more inspection I found that the top screw on my TPS was missing. I replaced it and shot all the terminals and it checks good. The only test that wasnt exact was #3 that should have been infinate, I got .01 but not sure if its because Im using a cheap multimeter from Harbor Freight. Anyhow, got that tight and seems to be a good TPS. My PCV gromet needs replaced, I pulled the hose off the valve and plugged it with my finger and it idles down some. Ill fix that tomorrow. Ive read alot about the IAC valve, bolted to the bottom of the throttle body. Most Ive seen have plugged hoses, Ill check that tomorrow also and see if it helps. Any other thoughts?

I removed and inspected the hoses to the IAC, nothing was plugged. I made a blank off plate to delete the IAC so that I dont have high idle at start up. Starts and idles right at 1000 RPM on every start. Once I start driving, it idles anywhere from 1250-1500 RPM's until I hit the brake and then it surges up and down. I have replaced the coolant temp sensor and disconnected the cold start injector. Coolant system has been completely flushed and is full with no bubbles. I have shot all the vacuum lines and components with carb cleaner with no change in idle. I read that the one way valve between the brake booster and intake may have failed and cause some problems. I dont know what to do to make this thing idle properly. I dont want to shotgun parts and hope it works. Im thinking its an internal problem with the TB.

Interesting problem. When I couldn't get mine to idle I found the iacv was out of adjustment. It was either idling to high or wouldnt idle at all.

Have you cleaned the TB?

I have cleaned the TB with carb cleaner but I can still see gunk on the butterfly valve. There also seems to be a gap between the butterfly and the walls of the TB. It needs to be removed and cleaned by hand. I ran a full bottle of seafoam through the PCV hose with no change. My IACV is completely bypassed, no air getting into the TB through there. I dont know what the specs should be on the TB to get it back into alignment. Im thinking rebuild but again, dont want to spend money until I know the problem. Ideal situation would be to install a known good TB and see if there are any changes.

I tore my throttle body apart and cleaned it when I rebuilt my engine about 15kl ago. It was filfthy and I'm sure the cleaning was necessary. If your tb is dirty and your flapper dealy in it doesn't close all the way then it will idle high. Also, if your air ports under the idle adjustment screw are dirty and not letting you turn that screw low enough, your idle will be high.

Are you getting any CEL lights? If your ecu is throwing any codes and running in open loop, your idle will be high.

I do not have a CEL light. I unplugged the TPS to see what would happen when I step on the brake, which usually causes the idle to drop from 1850 or so down to 700 and bounce to 1100 over and over. With the TPS unplugged, I have the same high idle but no drop in RPM when step on the brake. Not sure what that tells me.:ybrick:

The TB would be a good place to start. Pull it off and clean it top to bottom. Also, go ahead and replace all your vacuum lines while you're at it. It will cost less than $10 in hose and it's well worth it.
