285/70/17 ridge grappler tire pressure...lift woes and rough ride..

Hey guys,

I recently got a lift. King shocks with 550 pound springs in the front, toytec superflex (not HD) in the rear. Front is up about 2-2.5 inches.

The truck rides a lot rougher on city streets than I anticipated. I'm a little disappointed honestly.

I tossed a couple sand bags in the back to help with the bone jarring rebound from the toytec springs.

But, in an effort to further make the ride more street friendly, I now have all 4 tires at 29 psi - and it still feels like a dump truck compared to OEM TRD Pro suspension.

Any suggestions? Lower the tire pressure more? Switch to KO2s?

Thanks,
Chris

sounds like this may be more of a suspension issue than tire. c load or e load grapplers? did you have them on before the lift?

Compression adjustable Kings? What Load Rating are the Ridge Grapplers? 29 psi is too low for street driving and might lead to cupping. Lowering it any further will only make it worse. The OEM TRD Pro suspension was geared towards on road driving with mild off-roading in mind. Once you get into the race shocks and stiffer tires things change quite a bit. Although I am surprised you feel the 550lb Kings are too rough as I've heard those are plush. How much off-roading do you do? You may want to consider a P-rated tire. Switching to KO2's won't solve the problem.

According to his other thread... http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/263322-toytec-2-inch-rear-spring-rides-pretty-rough.html

He has C-load 285 ridge grapplers and adjusters on his kings.

Sorry to hear you aren't liking it. I have the exact same set up aside from the tires (E rated St Maxx 255/80r17) and while I will say the rear end is a little bit stiffer than before when I had SAW 1.5" rear springs, I still think it's a great overall improvement. I'll be loaded down for camping for the first time with the new setup this weekend, curious to see how much softer the rear end feels with a couple hundred pounds of stuff back there. Sounds like you might want to try the Sway-a-Way coils, I loved mine and only swapped them out because I was worried about reverse rake when loaded down.

I have the kings w res. 2.5" in front with OME 2" longer springs in the rear, i am running Falken M/Ts 285/70/17 E load with 46 psi front, and 34 psi rear, the rear is just a tad on the stiff side, but not bad at all. Over all i love the way it rides, and handles. I have no after market bumpers, but the sliders added 100 lbs. to it. What part of the country are you in?

As stated in the other thread you started regarding the same issue, this is a very subjective issue. Once you go to a race shock setup things changed quite a bit, as stated above. It’ll get a little better as it breaks in but seeing how concerned you are about the ride I don’t think you’ll ever like the feel. Sell it and put your pro setup back on.

I'm on c-load tires.

I have experience with coilovers on cars and can honestly say this takes potholes worse than my Audi RS5 I have on coilovers with low profile tires at 40 PSI.

Every single bump on the road below 25 mph makes it feel like my teeth are about to fall out. The whole inside of the truck rattles over the smallest of potholes.

I had hoped going with high end stuff and softer springs, C-load tires, etc would help avoid this.

you have quite a bit more sidewall than me with that 80 series tire. perhaps 285 tire on 9 inch wide wheel is also part of the problem.

Yes I understand. I'm just hunting for ideas and pointers from the knowledgeable group here who may have experienced similar.

Between the shop that did the work not tightening everything down during the install, super bumpy rear post-install, etc., I am doing my best to trouble shoot and find solutions.

And I apologize for the multiple threads - but many people won't click certain thread titles if they aren't at top of mind in regards to "search terms".

Its not your tires. I and many others run this tire in this load range and size. Ride is great = ) I hope you are able to solve your issues. Good luck

At this point i am thinking it is a botched install, i don't know what else it could be, i have the same set up and i can haul ass over stuff and have no problem. Were are you located, if close we can get together and compare?

is this your first truck with suspension like this? Perhaps have a local boardmember take a ride with you see what they think.

Have you measured exactly how much lift you got?
If your coil overs are cranked up too high it would cause a really harsh ride. Especially looking at the 550 lb coils which seems pretty light to me it's possible that to get that much lift it had to be adjusted significantly higher than it should be. I was on a 650 lb toytec set up before I added any weight fwiw. That provided 3" lift. With bumper winch etc etc etc I run 700 lb coils and could maybe go heavier

thanks...coils aren't cranked too much up front. 5-8 threads showing...

I was very disappointed with how stiff my King suspension was as well when I first put it on. As it broke in for a few hundred miles it got considerable smoother.

Not running Kings, I'm running ADS with Ridge Grapplers and to me it feels just a little stiffer than stock, but a whole lot more secure. I'm also running Icon 2" springs in the rear.

Thanks. I’m hoping that is the case. Def went with king over the others due to how well reviewed it was in terms of ride quality.

Ok airing up to 34 psi seems to have helped a bit.

So, I went from 40 PSI, to the low 30s, high 20s...now mid-30s seems to make it better.

New problem - another newly developed clunk from the front left.

I'm going to take it to the dealer and have them make sure that everything is torqued down to OEM spec instead of going back to the shop that did the lift.
