285/70/17 with a 265-65-17 spare?

Hey guys I decided to buy the 285 coopers!

Obviously I wont be able to fit a 285 cooper spare.

So.....should I leave my factory tire under the truck and use it if necessary (will it hurt the truck if i use it as a spare for a few miles??????

or take it out and have a 5th cooper installed on it and keep it in the garage and drive around town with out a spare and if i need one it will be in my gargage?

what do you guys think?

Keep the stock spare. Should you ever need to use it, not being the exact size won't hurt anything. Plenty of cars come with those little donut spares from the factory.

You can always get a 285/70/17 for the spare & deflate the tire & see if it'll fit under the truck.

And when you need it, just be sure you have an air compressor & inflate the tire.

Not true. All the spare dounuts have the SAME DIAMETER as the actual road tires...they are just thin (width wise). With the 4runner having VSC and ATRAC, i would be hesitant to put on a tire with a different diameter...the computer may go crazy!

KC, i learned that you cannot deflate a "radial" tire. I believe that you could do this in the old days with "bias ply" tires. With radial tires, you cannot "squish" them smaller. (BTW, most SUV and car tires are radial tires....)

Trdsupranick, you may need to think this through a little bit more before jumping to the 285 series tires.

boy oh boy...what do I do? Darn it ...it seems like I may need to upsize my wheels from my 17's and get 18's and get a 275/65/18 cooper like promed afterall.

Yes I managed to fit it into the spare, however if you notice in the pictures, I am clearing the panhard bar by nothing more than the hairs on the tire. Literally. 285 Nitto's are 32.7" whereas the 285 Coopers are 33". He will not fit them unless he goes with the Nitto's.

I say just leave the spare at home. There are enough tire shops around town. When you go on trips, just strap it down in back.

Or think about getting the Nitto's like I have.

The easiest option is a BFG TA KM 255/75/17 spare. Its diameter (32.05") is close enough to a 285/70/17 (33"). Stock 265/65's are 30.6. I believe a 255/75 will not cause any problems with the VSC when run as a spare to the 285's because the revolutions per mile will be close. Plus you can pick one up cheap.
