2889 OME coils and 5100s

Before you read/reply....yes I used Google to search before posting. And the answer isn't there...so chill.

Wanting to lift my 4runner.

Looking at the Bilstien 5100 option. Bang for the buck is the biggest driver. OME seems to be taller up front and can't be customized to a specific height like Bilstien.

We vacation on the Outer Banks and I have a surf fishing rack that fits in the hitch. Figure 200 plus pounds for that on the hitch. Plus all my junk.

I don't want the truck to sag when it's loaded down like that. I had air bags in my 3rd gen that worked nicely. Thought about that here but air bags on a trail with KDSS seems like a crime. Since I do some light wheeling already. Plus I want to add 200 more pounds of skid plates.

So, anyone out there running 5100 with OME 2889 coils? Are they too tall for those 5100 rears? Is this just going to stick the back end too far up in the air? Hopefully my rational isn't off with the 200lb of armor and the occasional 400lb plus vacation load. Am I better off with a complete OME setup (or anything else)? Pics and recommendations are welcomed.

This issue is common, i'm going through the same thing. What height lift are you looking for? How often will you ahve that weight hanging off out there? Are you willing to sacrifice your unladen ride for a better ride when loaded? OMEs have about the highest spring rates out there for our trucks. the 889s are 260lbs/in, stock is closer to 200 lb/in, so you are looking at a 30% increase.

Those will also give you a 3" lift in the rear, as mentioned, going the OME route up front (which has a much closer to OEM spring rate) will also net you a 3" lift. You will maintain the stockish rake. What would you adjust the front 5100s at? Or would you just keep the stock springs? I wouldn't worry about rear shock length, the 5100s are jut .25" shorter than the OME nitrochargers (60080)

Also, i am planning to go the route you used to have, air bags on softer springs. I'm already running them with my stock springs. I wouldn't worry about them with teh kdss, they shouldn't effect or limit your travel at all.

What was the issue again with airbags on a KDSS truck??

Stiff springs without a constant load would not be my no.1 choice.

Thanks for the feedback.

Im trying to avoid replacing the control arms, so keeping it in the 2-2.5" lift in the front. The ride quality won't bother me since my daily commute is short. The trips we would take Id be loaded down which is where Id assume the springs would come in.

I was under the impression that air bags limit wheel travel. So they aren't ideal for a truck that will see off road action. Don't want to defeat the benefit of KDSS. And what bit of wheeling I've done, it's impressive.

The Firestone airbags I had on my third gen were great. Simple install and easy to operate.

Might just be I'll need to do the OME kit and get control arms while I'm at it. Just figured the price and ride quality of Bilstien would be the route. But I can't find any pics or reviews of the 5100 and 2889 coils.

The 2884/ 2895E spring setup is supposed to give you a 2" lift, and they are rated for the same rates. Either way, you may still end up having to install UCAs to get the castor back in check.

I run the 5100 and OME set-up on my rig right now, put close to 10k miles on it and it has served its purpose very well. Certainly stiffer but Holds weight without sagging too much and the rear 889s have softened up a little as time went on ending up being a pretty good ride.

All my pictures are 5100s fronts set at .85 notch and OME 884/889.

Hate to bring up an old post, but did you end up going with the 5100/OME 889 setup in the rear? If so, how did it work out?

I have the 5100's in the rear already but I need to replace the Icon springs I have back there and was thinking the OME 889 is perfect but from what I understand the rear 5100's only have 2 inches of extra travel while the 889 springs provide a 3" lift.

Just trying to figure out the combo works together.

Only about a couple years into learning about all this, so please forgive my ignorance.

Bring this back from the dead before I create a new topic.

Wondering if you ended up going with the set up 2884 front and 2889 rear set up and Bilstein 5100s?

I just installed Bilstein 5100 front and back on my 22 SR5 2WD, with 2884 front spring and 36-281817 Rear spring + .5 spacer combo. That said, I was expecting front would lift between 2.5-3” but got about 4” instead. Thankfully I got an aftermarket UCA. The back has perfect 2” lift, which levels out the truck. However, I’m concerned that back would sag when loaded.

Solutions I’m thinking, either
1. Use my stock at front to bring down the front from 4” to 3”.
2. Since I’m a 2WD, 4” lift shouldn’t be an issue and I’m kinda digging the ride height. So I thought about getting the 2889 rear spring which would brings the rear up from 2” to 2.5-3”. However, I’m concerned about overextending the rear shocks since the max lift is supposed to be only 2”.

Additional thoughts: do prefer the ride quality with the 2884 front springs on Bilsteins. It’s stiff enough but also way smoother than stock. Maybe the central gravity helps too with 4” - I feel like I’m riding at the top of the world. So not sure if the ride would be the same if I use the stock spring on Bilstein method.

Thoughts?

Did you end up going back to factory coils?

I’m about to install 5100’s and wheelers t-13 rear coils (1.5” lift) on my wife’s 2022 sr5 2wd. I was trying to keep the front center hub to fender measurement around 21.5” to 22”. Stock, I’m now at 19”. 22” would be a 3” lift from stock. So trying to either utilize factory coils at either 1.75” to 2.5” clip setting and add top plate trim packer to achieve this or possibly try a 883 Ome coil which is approx .5” less lift vs your 884. Just worried the 883’s will lift too much after hearing you got 4” from 884’s.

The 2wd is 275lbs lighter than a 4wd. That’s probably why you got 4” out of the 884’s. I had 884’s on a 2017 5th gen 4wd and got exactly 2.5” lift…..but my stock center hub to fender started at 20” on my 4wd. The 2wd comes with different factory coils vs a 4wd hence the height difference. Guessing the 2wd coils are lighter.

Anyhow was just wondering if you’d tried the factory coils with the 5100’s and what amount of lift you may have achieved on selected clip vs the 884’s on bottom clip. Also, would you mind sharing your front center hub to fender measurement with whichever front coils and 5100 clip position you’re at.

Thanks and hope you get it where you like it.

Sorry I didn't get to reply sooner. I was expecting like 30-50 lbs difference in weight between 2wd and 4wd, but 200+ makes a huge difference.

I didn't end up using the stock coils, at least not yet. I thought it was completely leveled but I actually have about .5 sag at the back. So I just bought 2883 and still waiting for it to arrive. Apparently, it's .5-1" shorter than 2884 but with the same spring rate. I was trying to avoid using the stock spring because I want to make sure I can easily sell my stock suspension with them. I also didn't want to pre-load by moving up 3-4 notches. I'm hoping 2883 would solve the issue. Otherwise, I'll have to end up using my stock springs.

Let me know also what you end up going with.

These are my current measurements: (Center of wheel hub to fender)

Before
FP - 19.5
RP - 22

Current
FD - 23.5
FP - 24
RD - 24
RP - 24.5

I also have the notorious driver side lean with stock weight depending on where I park. The .5 fluctuates from 0 to .5. Also the sag is not noticeable until it's loaded.

Thanks, Sweet looking 4Runner! Turned out nice!
Maybe try an OME 10mm trim packer spacer on your drivers side only rear coil to remedy the lean….the 2883’s should be very close to 1/2” less lift vs the 2884’s so you’ll be very close to level….

Saturday I installed the front 5100’s third notch (1.75) stock coils and stacked two wheelers 1/4” top hat spacers on each side. After settling I’m at 22” center hub to fender both fronts. Rears I installed the 5100’s and wheelers T-13 coils and a 10mm OME trim packer (spacer) on the drivers side rear. Rears are both at 23” center hub to fender…no more lean.
My fronts center hub to fender went from 19” to 22” and rears 21” drivers side 21.5” pass side to 23” both sides. So basically 3” lift from stock in front and 1.5” lift rears.
Have not had it aligned yet. I may take one of the 1/4” spacers out on the fronts to lower it to 21 5/8” to help get some caster….hoping they can get to +2.8-3. If not, I’ll get some JBA uca’s on order. I’m staying with 265’s and will get different wheels (8.5” wide -10 offset) later.

Ride is just a tad more firm, less nose dive and body roll. Actually rides very nice and wife likes it. The lift….??? Shes going to have to get used to entering and exiting. She’s only 5’4” and had been driving a CX5 Mazda for 6-7 years….Lol

I’ll get a pic later this week. I love how it turned out.

Thanks. This is probably the most mod I'll do. Lift, wheels and tires.

Yeah 2883 should give me close to 3", I hope. I'll be satisfied if it's 3.5". Should settle to 3 1/2 or 3 at some point. I might add 1" spacers in the rear depending on how the front goes. I also have the .5 spacer ready to add to the driverside to fix the lean. I'm itching to fix work on the truck this weekend.

Glad you were able to work it out. I assume you went with your stock springs in the front? Wondering why you didn't just go all the way to the top notch instead of adding the spacers. Also, I'm just 2" taller than your wife. Imagine me hopping to a 4" lift haha. I love the high ride though.

Yes, I used stock springs. I also like the higher ride and these just look good lifted! Only reason I did the spacers was afraid it’d be too much preload at 2.5” and would ride very rough. Also the spacers are a tad easier to remove vs moving the clip position.

My issue was the 2wd vs 4wd and expected lift which, with a lot of looking, lead me to your post where you got 4” of lift from 2884’s. With the 275lbs weight difference, it’s hard to know what to expect. As far as i know, the 2wd and 4wd use the same uca and lca and same eccentrics cams. But the factory coils and front shocks definitely have different part numbers.

Hope you get yours lined out this weekend. Sweet looking rig with your lift and scs f-5’s/Falkens.

***I forgot to mention ours has third row seating which also adds weight (~100+lbs). Really didn’t want 3rd row but this one had it and it was available.

Thanks. My wheels are Gen-5s actually :)

Just a quick update. I was finally able to install the 2883s at 0 notch over the weekend. Now my 4runner is sitting at 2.75" (passenger) 2.5" (driver) at the front, and still 2" in the back. I should have fixed that lean while I was at it but whatever. 4runner looks pretty leveled now and I'm pretty happy. Wished I had taken a picture to share. Also, hopping into the 4runner is less dramatic now haha.

Here's side by side pic of the coil springs (2884 vs 2883) for those who are curious, or just happen to stumble upon this thread.
2884 is 15.5"
2883 is 14.5"

Thanks for the update. Weird how OME states the 2883’s are only 15mm shorter than the 2884’s. But an inch is more like 25mm shorter. Anyhow sounds like you have it dialed in close to level. This will sound strange but on my wife’s current 2022 4R and on my 2017 4R I had the .5” lean and installing the ome 10mm trim packer on only the driver side rear fixed the lean both front and rear. There was an old post I found back in 2017 when I installed my 5100’s on my last 4R where I read that worked for correction both front and rear lean.

On my wife’s 4R, I ended up removing one of the two .25” top hat spacers I had installed on the front 5100’s and left my clip at 1.75” setting and factory coils. Now have right at 2.5” lift compared to where it was stock. Went from stock 19” center hub to fender to 21 5/8’s “.
Hope to get it aligned this week.
Thanks again , and your 4Runner turned out looking sweet! I hadn’t seen the Gen-5’s but they look good !!!
