okay so i own a 1994 4runner with rwd and auto trans. I have been playing with the idea of swapping a 5spd into it and was wondering if toyota ever made a rwd runner with a 5spd option or of they were all atuos. I have researched all over and can't find any info on this subject. just a bunch of swap threads, so any info would be appreciated!!!

thanks!

You could possibly use a 90-95 2wd pickup trans if they made them. Just an idea. I did a 5 speed swap and used a (4wd) pickup as my parts truck. They should be the same series transmissions from 90-95 both 4runner or pickup, either 2 or 4 wheel drive whatever you are after.

Why not do a 4x4 swap while you are at it? You could always use the 4wd trans until you could get the rest of the parts for that swap.

that's actually exactly what i'm going to do.

I've been researching all of this for a while now and i just was curious if Toyota ever even made a 4runner rwd 5pd. My plan is to get all the 4wd components and bolt them in and while i'm doing that to put a 5spd in it as well. Like I said though the thought came to me while doing the research and i know that 2wd 4runners are not very common and i realized I've never seen a rwd 5pd. I never even thought about the same year trucks though that is a good idea if I didn't want 4wd.

Doing the swap is relatively easy on the 2nd gen, much less electronics to deal with. A mechanical 4WD swap would be fairly easy, mostly a bolt on affair

I have seen a couple of 90-91 2wd 5spd 22re 4runners locally so yes they made them. Don't think I've seen a 2wd 5spd v6 though

The wheelbase on some of the 2wd pickups from 89-95 was roughly the same as the 2nd gen, so as long as the driveshaft yoke was the same you might be able to use the driveshaft out of one of them, the transmission is the same as long as it had the same engine you have.

ah yes i probably should have said that i have a v6 as well. i may have to do some pick n pulling soon. as far as electronics would i need a new ecm off of a 4wd 5spd or would i be able to keep everything the same as it is now assuming i have manual hubs?

thanks for all the input guys i was really trying to avoid posting this question but for weeks i couldn't find any solid info on it. I guess most people just don't want to buy a 2wd 4runner, but for me it was much cheaper and never offroad so in very good condition.

also here is a picture of her i know everyone loves pictures!

If you are going manual hubs as well as a non ADD diff it it possible to keep your current ecu, however if you get a the ecu for a 4x4 5 speed you will avoid a whole lot of wiring work there still may be some though.

When I did my 5 speed swap I used the engine wiring harness from my donor truck because mine was corroded and chaffed through in multiple spots. Because of this I used the ecu from the donor truck and had zero wiring to mess with. I do not have the safety switches for the clutch so it is like an older generation truck where it could be started in gear, I'm yet to have an issue with this. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Way to finally get a pic up! I dig the blacked out look! What did you use to do the grill and bumpers?

What would be better? what would be some downsides to running a non ADD diff? I would like to keep this as barney style as I could and what you've done seems like the way to do it. swap in a whole new donor ECM and harness. Not worried about the saftey switch because i'm the only one who would drive it and i've never owned a vehicle newer than 97 haha

Thank you! I used plasti dip just to test out it's durability and it has been a year now and the bumper and wheels haven't chipped or peeled. I've painted the door handles and mirrors since then and looks even better. never been a fan of chrome.
