Your mistaken. No 4wd V8 has the option of 2wd. Thats includes SR5, Sports and Limiteds. No matter the trim level, if its a 4wd V8 the powertrain is identical.
If you want 4wd with selectable 2wd then you have to get a V6. But who want one of those
I love the idea of being able to leave black marks all over town but then tires would get expensive so I've come to realize that the V8 with Fulltime 4wd is best the way it is.
EDIT: And yes it's definately more involved that just relays LOL. You would need a new transfer case, 4wd ECU etc.
Going to be a different center differential, different switch, wiring harness, fuses, possibly drive shafts and possibly engine ECU. Look for the factory service manual download links in this forum and you could probably figure out the parts.
That's some expensive work just to be able to back it off into part-time 4WD -- I bet parts/labor end up running close to $10k assuming it can be done.

Don't get me wrong, if I had the option I would rather be able to select 2wd. But since my time machine isn't ready yet, I can't go back in time and tell the Toyota engineers to add that option. So I'm stuck choosing V8 OR selectable 2wd. Not a hard decision for me.
