2wd with locker

2wd with E-locker

I was at the salvage yard today to get oh **** handles, and noticed they had wrecked 4x4 with rear locker, so here are the 2 questions.

1- would it be worth it to add a locker to a 2wd that won't see much offroad?

2- What is involved in swapping it, I would think it would be easier to by the whole axle, push button for the dash? What else? What price range should this be in?

I didn't even talk price with them as my usual contact was out on vacation.

The TRD Prerunner Tacoma's come a rear locker and they are 2wd. Would it be worth it. I'd say ya it would help out some and it make it slightly more capable.

Is the rear axle from a tacoma or a 4runner? If it's from a Tacoma more work would be involved to swap axles. Could possible swap 3rd members but you'd have to rework your axle to make it fit.

Also, you'd need to make sure that gear ratios match with what you already have.

Saw your post over on Yotatech as well.

You would be looking at $500 plus for the axle assembly and probably 6-7 hours to do the swap. Switching out your ring and pinion to maintain your current ratio will add more time.
IMHO, it's not worth it if you don't offroad.

Why would I need to change the ring and pinion, I don't have to match the front. I plan to upgrade tires so the stock ratio will be off anyways.

You don't have to change them, I was just mentioning it because you may want to. Depending on what engine you have, your current diff ratio is either 3.727 or 3.909. Axle assemblies with a locker are 4.3. That is a very noticeable difference and you may not like the new ratio if you don't swap the r&p.
Since you have now mentioned that you might up the tire size, depending on what size you go for, the 4.3 could help even things out.

valid points, my 98 is 4cyl auto, I am looking at going with tires in the 32" range. Hwy mpgs would be priority #1.

If I have looked at the calculator correctly 4.30 would actually get me back close to stock with 32s
