3.4l differences?

I'm in the process of replacing the engine in my 99 4runner since it's leaking coolant internally w/ 245k on the clock,i already have the money set aside to buy a complete long block and waiting to find the time to do it.my question is about the differences on the 3.4l made since 96 to 02 if there were any major changes that would affect installation or smog requirements in the different years they were made,i'm also contemplating on buying a wreck unit older or newer than 99 with all the goodies that i might need anyways (i.e power seats) i wouldn't mind installing a used engine if mileage is low but not sure about any changes to the engine during production over the years.need your input and experience on this matter, would a tacoma 3.4l be any different than a 4runner?i have spotted a wreck unit that the price is right and could use the extra money on upgrades. Thanks in advance guys.

Any 5VZ-FE long block will work. You will have to change manifolds, and maybe Oil pan on some of these JDM engines that are available.

Major differences is the throttle bodies between early and late models.

Thanks for your input Singtoe, would it matter if the engine is from 2wd or 4wd?i know the intake and exhaust need to be swap out it just worries me if there are any major changes in the block or heads (i.e EGR?)don't know too much about the 3.4l just trying to get my stuff ironed out before i jump in and get dirty.:help:

Not much different. I do believe the oil pan is different on a 2WD. But block, heads, cams, exhaust manifolds, etc would all be the same. Just keep your throttle body and you may need a few brackets. Not a terrible swap.

Thanks again

I just found out the T4R that i was eyeballing was sold last night,i guess i will keep on looking.thanks for the heads up Gan but i can wait for something close around me.if nothing shows up by end of next month i will buy a reman unit and call it a day.

When my engine is ready for replacement, I plan to get a JDM engine. They seem to be a killer deal for the low mileage you get.
