I’m really curious about how many Surfs were actually produced. I can’t imagine Japan being as large of a market as North America yet the amount of Hilux Surfs being imported out of that country is quite amazing. There’s countries in Asia where they are literally lined up on streets since they are such a common import.

Here in Mozambique they are very very common, obviously known as the Hilux Surf.
On any given day when I go to town to shop at least one in six vehicles I see is a Hilux Surf.
Very easy to buy and import from Japan.

They were also assembled in Argentina from Japanese parts and sold all over South America. I own a 1997 HiLux SW4 I purchased in Brazil. (The ex- has custody but I have visitation rights.) There may be other assembly sites.

When going through Joburg to Durbin SA I would say I saw those same numbers or near. Puzzling how Toyota decided what models go where.

Seen one in person actually. Very cool because they don't have all that Surf stick-on crap so it's as close to what a US spec 4Runner with a diesel would've been. Actually, the UN seems to have bought a alot of these during the Kosovo conflict, and as a result the country has these badged as 4Runners with the 1KZ turbodiesel. They are very plain jane versions.
