3rd Gen 4Runner JDM swap WOES

Awesome! Great news, good info, and congrats! Any chance you could post a link to the YouTube vid regarding cleaning the injectors?

what is this meet up? what activities go on? could be fun! i can bring this 01 ive been working and my lady can bring her 98 "urban derby" car.

These things happen from time to time. There was just one on Fiesta Island. I don't know how that went. I'd like to have one later this month or perhaps an Anza-Borrego trail run in October.

Check the SoCal section from time to time.

first 20 miles clocked without issue. not so much as a drip of any fluid out of place.

cross my fingers it stays that way. :couch2:

i'll scope out the So Cal section and see when local meet ups happen. If im goin to Anza Borrego though, I'm bringing my wheeler

Well....

minor issue last night turned into a little bigger one. one of the hoses that runs from the motors coolant output at the back of the intake manifold to the throttle body split and began leaking coolant. no biggie.

called a buddy to come help me out, but got impatient and began removing things before he got there. needed to remove the intake hoses to access the leaky hose. ended up ripping the boot that attaches to the throttle body in half.

headed to the chula juana yunk yards this morning hoping i can find that piece. wish me luck.

Junk yard came through. Guy happened to know exactly what i was looking for and dug it out of a destroyed '97 that was full of intakes, throttle bodies, and plenums. in and out in 5min

Got in the 'zone on the way home and got the small hose i needed. all back together and back on the road.

motor threw the CEL and also the two traction control related lights when i fired it after the repair. drove to the gas station, filled it up. fired it back up and all lights were off.

my '01 on the left and my Lady's '98 on the right

just clocked 250miles since completing the swap.

things ive noticed:

this motor has lots more bottom end torque than the other motor or the motor in my '98 (290K). the transmission is quick to shift to overdrive and stay there. will pull final gear up hills without having to downshift. im impressed

the temp has held steady even with the excessive heat here in Sandy Eggo right now and a few extended periods of sitting waiting in the college parking lot for a space with the A/C on full blast.

also realized how low i was on transmission fluid. ive got it up to par now, but ive definitely added much more than i lost when i disconnected the trans cooler. shifts much more easily and smoother then before (go figure, dumbass)

MPG. im about 175 miles into this tank and i should have just under 1/2 tank left, but ive got 1/4. i'll attribute this loss in MPG to the aforementioned extended wait periods with AC on (30+min) and the first few miles of the tank where the computer was still learning the new motor.

things i still need to do:

new radiator. im seeing spider web cracking in the plastic one thats in there. one of the guys at the toyota parts counter said Denso makes a nice unit. any thoughts from the experts?

air filter. one of the things i should have changed but didnt. are the K&N units the way to go? ive got no performance upgrades whatsoever, so id just be looking for increased mileage.

front wheel bearings. i can hear them and theyre not going to get any better. is there a thread on here that breaks down how the front wheel bearings come out. im sure its a press fit, and thats not an issue, just cant find any info on it readily available.

adjust rear brakes. re did the drivers rear axle seal and bearing a couple months ago and since then the e brake lever is still too far out for my liking and the cables make a little noise as if theyre loose and rattling around in the down position. also, im not sure the front brakes are getting the amount of assistance from the rears as they should.

once it cools down... i'll get back to it.

quick question... is there a way to change the title of this thread?

Nice! We also have a his and hers 4runner deal going on with the wife and I :)

- Denso makes a nice replacement. Have to really check when you receive it as they are packaged like crap

- I have used k&n filters in all of my cars. No issues, I just clean them every 30K or so. I think I would be just as happy with a good paper filter

- I have photos and info on the above and wheel bearing change on my restore and rework thread in my sig

I used denso, they are great, packaging depends on shipper

I use paper, did have a K&N on my 65 mustang once, dyno showed it took 6hp from my 94hp i6 3.0L which is alot for that little engine, paper gives better breathing in my experience

nope

Just checking in

1,500mile update.

Hasnt skipped a beat. fires right up cold or hot, doesnt do anything funny, doesnt leak, no funny noises. i'm more than pleased

figured id toss up a couple pics of what i found in th oil pan of the US motor with 208K when i pulled it

mmmm rod bushings. yummy. these took out the piston skirts on cylinders 3 & 4

one of the parts orders when it came in

I pulled the heads off to investigate the condition of the valves. valves looked fine. one cam had worn a groove in the front journal, other than that cams were good

after 208K you can STILL see the factory cross hatching in the cylinders. I'm genuinely impressed

10,000+ mile update

I had clocked just over 10K on this motor before deciding to take my rig on a 2300mi road trip to Aspen, Co from San Diego.

from sea level all the way up to 8K feet this lil motor performed flawlessly, though it was admittedly weaker at higher altitudes

Trecked through vegas and up the 15 through and across Utah to Aspen on the way there, and down the 89 in Utah to Zion national park and Coral Pink Sand Dunes on the way back before heading south through Sedona and Phoenix.

Just wanted to check in. I know this post is old. 293k and this JDM motor is still smooth

Ordered a "new" engine from yota1 but the lead time is crazy and the price is about double the JDM route. I'd be more inclined to do it with someone that had experience. Bummer I no longer live in Tierrasanta! Glad everything is working still!
