I looked at other crash tests and believe me the 3rd gen seems to be very solid (even the drivers door can be open from outside!). Even full size pickups have severe damages (F150, RAM, Tundra and Silverado https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BcYtskkzFo)

I'm pretty sure the overlap of the two videos are different. The newer video is the small overlap - much harder than the moderate overlap of the 3rd gen video.

Gotta cut corners somewhere. In the race to improve fuel economy they cut a little metal here, lighten the frame there, substitute steel with aluminum. Whereas the older 4Runners are sturdy, compact frames that are heavy but strong. They build cars and trucks with "impact zones" now instead.

I've been hit by a 4Runner at 50 MPH head on. My car was blasted all over the intersection, complete total. The 4Runner? It bent the bumper and fender even after rolling on it's side. Didn't even blow all the windows.
