IDK if it's a direct bolt-in, it's 2" wider and IIRC the coil mounts are spaced differently.

You can easily make the 3rd fit in your existing housing. Takes a little work with a cut off wheel but not too bad.

Make sure to test the motor and it's the same gear ratio as your front diff

I'm I correct in saying that the axle splines are different? 1st-2nd gen have 27 splines and 86 and up are 30?

as mentioned earlier the swap into a non elocker housing isn't hard

several people have reported getting by with just griding the notch and not tapping the two holes there, just applying enough RTV to keep it from leaking

wasn't aware of any differences. I put 94 axle shafts into an 81 third..
pretty sure you are thinking of the spline count on locking hubs from a straight axle being different from IFS hubs

So the axels from ALL the Years are 30? I was reading it as the 95 and under were 27 spine axels and pinion. but they are acually 30 axle and 27 spline pinion?

ok found it. only the pinions are different. axels are all the same "30" spline.

Looks like I'll go ahead and modify my 2nd gen housing for the elocker.

As far as the wiring I haven't decided yet on which mfg to use. The ORS harness looks like a winner with the option of the OE switch. I hope to drill and grind this weekend. I dont want to screw up the drilling and taping as its one and done. Tight tolerances on the 2 long studs.

Finished the drilling,tapping and grinding the housing. Now its time to finish building the diff. So far so good.

So it'd be better to modify the 2nd gen axle, vs putting in the entire 3rd gen axle in the rear?

From what I've read the 3rd gen axle housing is slightly wider. I don't know of any other differences and haven't compared the two side by side. It would have been much easier to simply swap the complete axle housing so I'm assuming there must be additional differences.

Finally finished the elocker mod. I missed the info on the ABS speed sensor and the rear sway bar. The mechanical and electrical went really well and it works perfect. Now its time to address the rear ABS light and the sway bar.

No go on the sway bar. Running without one. I cant run the abs speed sensor either so I took the easy way out and removed the bulb. So far driveability and has been fine.
