3rd Gen Prices

Hey guys I've been looking at getting another 4Runner since I can't seem to live without one. Lately I've noticed that prices for 3rd gens seemed to have gone up since the last time I purchased one. I know tacomas have always had high prices but 4runners never seemed to be just as expensive. There have been a couple in the classified threads that I would think would be selling for 6-8k but their asking prices are 10k+. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just having bad luck in my search for another 3rd gen?

They're appreciating slightly. A good one can still be had for $8k stock. But if you want a modified one, the seller will list it above $10k for sure.

It seems that most out there are over 200k or 2wd nowadays and it's hard to find a good lower mileage 4wd, especially 99-02. You can find them cheap, but they go quick.

You can get a pretty decent 3rd gen for $3k

They seem to be going down for whatever reason. I picked mine up for $2650, limited, 4x4, e-locker, etc.

I looked for 9 months for "the one." I've never seen a $3k 3rd gen in AZ.

OP: Are you trying to find another sweet '99 SR5 highlander 5-speed? Good luck. I ended up paying the piper and driving 1300+ miles in order to bring mine home - but then you already know that story

Some people just get lucky and pay 3k for a 3rd gen with elocker and manual. I have been looking on and off for years and never came across a deal that good in the pnw. I picked mine up for 5k 99 auto open with 230k. All others were 6-7k for same mileage. I passed up a black 99 highlander a year ago still kicking myself for it.

And yes nice low mileage ones are going for 9-10k around here too. I just keep scrolling....

With how many 3rd gens are sitting in junkyards around me there's no way in hell I'd hold out and pay 9K for "the right one", I'd buy one with decent bodywork and a solid drivetrain and fix it up.

A dealership near me had a 01 limited on their lot for 11.300. Mileage I don't know. Never stopped to look. Got my 97 limited last fall for 4500 with 120,000 miles. Needed / needs some work yet.

Haha I'm going to try this time. The reason I posted about pricing is because they seem high to what I have paid in the past. I paid $8000 for 99 5 spd elocked with 129k miles, 6350 for a 99 limited elocked with 159k miles, and 3900 for a 99 with 150k miles. I guess I have been lucky finding the ones I did.

In Florida there arent many 4WD for sale, probably 80% are RWD.

Best one within 300 miles is a black/black 2000 SR5 4wd 5speed with 155,000 miles listed at $9400

I agree with you on that, I got my 2WD for what a thought was a good price in Tampa. Now I occasionally check CL and find 4WDs in pretty good shape for 4-6k in Orlando and around. If I could do it again, I would've keep looking and jumped on a 4WD. They're around, but certainly going up.

They are more since Toyota has crushed a majority of the ones produced because of rust issues.

Unreal. I could buy mine when I bought it with 102k twice.

The price for 3rd gens is ridiculous. I struggled to find one for under $5000 and spent months looking for one. Finally found one and it needed new tires, new struts, and had a leaking heater core (unbeknownst to me at the time). All I was looking for was a 4wd auto. I ended up getting mine for $3700 and it had 218k miles on it one owner. Others I was finding with similar miles were $4500+. I could probably give mine a bath, finish the front end rebuild, and sell it for $5-6000 with the work I've done to it.

Ha ha. Haven't looked at 405 Motors for a while. They've always been higher than everyone else, and sometimes they pick up Runners at eastern auctions.

Asking prices are higher than two years ago, at least for the 5 speeds I've been looking at, and they don't seem to be sitting around very long either.

I got a '99 Highlander model with 240k for $6K. It had higher miles but was exactly what I wanted. I watched the listing for awhile, it was $7500 on craigslist but got no takers.

I don't know about you, but the 4th gen is ugly to me and I wouldn't buy one, 5th gen is good looking (the predator face has grown on me as well)

4thGen does have that factory V8 thing going for it though....
