3rd Row Seating Questions/Issue

Hey Guys,

Another questions here, this time is had to do with the optional 3rd row seating. A few months ago I went camping with some friends and wanted to sleep in the back of my 4runner. To my suprise, I realised my "middle" seats do not fold flat.

A friend of mine has a 4th gen 4runner and his seats fold flat, however he does not have the 3rd row option.

My problem is that I am 6'3" and it was a very unfomfortable night. If I was able to just get my seats to lay flat I would have got about 4-6" more room in the back:wow2:

I am just wonder why the designs were different and if anybody with 3rd row seating has been able to figure out how to sleep in the back.

Thanks!

You can use the driver's seat/passenger's seat as beds if you would like.

All you will need to do is...

-Take off the head rests from both seats
-Pull the seats forward toward the dashboard
-Push the backside of the seats toward the middle row (literally pushing it down to make it flat) until it makes contact with middle row seat) you may have to pull your seats forward in order to do this since you're a tall dude
-Go to the middle row seats, and push the backside of both seats toward the 3rd row seating.

I'm not even sure putting down the seats transform into beds. If any, they feel like recliners like you see on planes (I couldn't even sleep on a flat surface, there was a slight bump where the open space between the front and the middle were). However, I think it could have been due to my seat height but nonetheless it definitely did not feel like a bed I was sleeping on. I haven't tried pushing the middle row seats all the way down with the 3rd row seating attached to the hook bar. I will need to try that next time I sleep in there.

Going down this road will definitely give you enough space to sleep in, however you will want privacy if that is the case. I have limo tint all around, and I am going to invest in buying something to cover the windshield whenever I sleep in my 4R. I've slept in my 4R 7 times now, and needless to say but I was somehow able to fall asleep every time!

I know exactly what you are saying… as I looked at that very closely when looking for my 4th gen 4Runner, as I also use it to sleep in it on some of my hunting trips.

Folding design of the 2-nd row on 4Runner with 3-rd row seating is allowing you to have a “path” to 3-rd row once 2-nd row is folded. If you would have the same folding design as 4Runner with flat folding seats ( no 3rd row) it would be a lot harder to get to 3-rd row seating… you would basically have to climb over the back of the folded 2nd row seat.

Learned something new. I have the 3rd row seats and I had no idea the non 3rd row runners second row folds flat. That would be nice to have.

my sport edition folds flat since i dont have the third row seats, and i have the cargo shelf in place of it ...

What I am trying to find out if its the seats or the way the seats are mounted. If it is just the seats then couldnt you just swap out the middle seats with a non-3rd row seat model? Just curious, alternatively I am going to see what it takes to remove the seats.:D

if u swapped them with non third row seats, then how would u get into the third row ??

2nd row swap available - 4th gen only

I have non 3rd row and would be willing to swap middle row with someone who wants the fold flat. Also, anyone wanting to sell third row and convert to non third row back end let me know I have all the non third row parts. This offers more cargo room and options if you don't use third row.
Sorry if this is wrong thread - new to forums

I am also 6'3" and one overnight camping trip I slept in the backw/my wife. Far to cramped for someone as tall as me(and I dont even have the 3rd row). I was actually thinking of ways to make it better, like putting quick release pins on the lower seats to free up a few inchs.
