3UZ into V8 4runner?

Thinking out loud here so hear me out for a second :popcorn::popcorn:

Has anyone considered doing this motor swap? The 3UZ is a Lexus V8 with an aluminum block, similar to the 1UZ which has a big following but the later models had 306hp, 325tq at the exact same RPM as the 2UZ (260hp, 305tq). I'd think as long as you have a VVTI 2UZ V8 in your 4runner, a swap over to a 3UZ (also VVTI) should be extremely easy as long as the 4runner transmission will bolt to the 3UZ. And since the engines look so similar, it might even be able to pass through CA smog assuming all the sensors work the same as a 2UZ and they should. Use 4runner exhaust manifolds and no one would be able to tell its an aluminum block BEAST under the hood. I'd also be willing to bet that any 3UZ/2UZ parts are interchangeable too so if the 3UZ parts for some reason didn't bolt up, you could pull the 2UZ part off and install it on the 3UZ.

Who wants to be a guinea pig? :D

Most people are mislead when seeing HP ratings, which manufacturers don't state how the higher HP ratings are gained, both the 2UZ and 3UZ are actually very close to the same HP when you really look at the ratings, the 2UZ HP is rated at 4800 RPMS and the 3UZ HP is rated at 5600 RPMS, so if you rated the 2UZ at the same RPMS as the 3UZ they both rate about the same, the only real difference is the weight, i.e. cast iron vs aluminum blocks!

So the 3UZ puts out more top end power which would make sense since they were installed in GS430s, SC430s and LS430s. I think they both get max torque around 3400 though, right?

Yes torque is almost the same at 3400 RPMs only 10+ lbs difference, but if you push the 2UZ up to the 5600 RPMs the 3UZ HP is rated at the 2UZ would also put out more HP then the ratings show.

I'm just saying that manufacturers tend to mislead the public when stating HP output because they don't tell you that the ratings are measured at different RPMs
 
So the 2uz produces some where around 80% of the tq by 1800rpm due to the longer stroke and a cam profile more geared through making tq low in the rev range. You can definitely tell that's it runs at steam at 4600rpm! The 3uz has more aggressive cams and higher compression (requires 91 octane) so it can make more peak hp with less cubic inches. I think set of aggressive cams along with headers would really make a big difference on the top end power of the 2uz! Technically you could swap the heads from the 1uz/3uz on top of the 2uz but theirs not much info on the power output.

I think the starter on the 4Runner engine was moved to the top to clear room for the exhaust to fit in the frame rails. So the the engine is taller than the ones in the sedans.

The starter under the intake manifold is a feature of all the UZ series of engines!
 
The 2UZ-FE has 271 hp @ 4,800 RPM & 315tq @ 3400 rpm (starting in 2005 for the 4Runner)

The 2UZ-FE was a 4.7 L (4,663 cc or 284.6 cu in) version built in Tahara, Aichi, Japan and at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama.

Unlike its other UZ counterparts, this version uses a cast iron block to increase durability, as it was designed for low-revving, high-torque pickup and SUV applications.

Its bore is 94 mm (3.7 in) and stroke is 84 mm (3.3 in). Output varies by implementation, but one VVT-i variant produces 202 kW (271 hp) at 4800 rpm with 427 N·m (315 lbf·ft) of torque at 3400 rpm.

JDM versions produce 173 kW (232 hp) at 4800 rpm and 422 N⋅m (311 lbf⋅ft) at 3600 rpm, while Australian models produce 170 kW (230 hp) at 4800 rpm and 410 N⋅m (300 lbf⋅ft) at 3600 rpm.

Like the 1UZ-FE it has aluminum DOHC cylinder heads, MFI fuel injection, 4 valves per cylinder with bucket tappets, one-piece cast camshafts, and a cast aluminum intake manifold. For 2010, it was replaced by the 1UR-FE or 3UR-FE, depending on the country.

He means improved performance. For example. You can add a supercharger, new cams, new heads, new exhaust, new intake, etc...

He is saying it would be easier to build out a 4.7 than to donaswap. I think I agree.
 
Whenever these motor swap threads pop up I always say:

Just supercharge the 4.7, easier, cheaper, more hp.

I posted in a guys thread on another forum who's had a bit more experience with these motors than I have. Here's what he had to say...

You hit on my idea of the best combination. The A750f bolts right up, and in the case of an engine swap there in no need for modifying the output shaft. Plus it has the lowest gears.

The problem is the 3UZ ecu won't run the a750, the earlier version has the a650 which although 5 speed has different solenoids (I did extensive research on that one) or the later versions the a760 which has to be modified to work with 4x4

I have thought about using the 2UZ ecu to run a 3UZ, but I doubt there would be much benefit other than lighter weight. Maybe if your engine wears out throw in a JDM 3UZ and see what happens?

My only thought behind this swap is a 3UZ can be found under $1000, and if everything was interchangeable, the swap might not cost anything after selling the 4runner engine. But now I'm learning its more complicated than that due to the ECU/transmission compatibility issues :D

What can I say though? I like significant performance mods for the least amount of money. When you start getting into full engine builds you're into it for many thousands on top of many thousands for a supercharger. I guess if you have deep pockets thats cool but not all of us do.

Sometimes Toyota makes things easy, like converting my 2001 Tacoma Prerunner into a 4wd with no fabrication work needed, literally bolted a 4wd tranmission/t-case on and bolted in a front diff.
 
I hear you man. But look at it like a persons heart. Is it better to cut out your hear and insert the heart of a 21 year old or to put down the cheeseburgers and lace up those sneakers? Maybe not an apples to apples comparison. But I think you get the idea.

I had the same idea a while ago, dropping that 4.6 v8 into a taco. Still plausible

$6k which isn't a whole lot considering the gains you get and it's really the only kit on the market.

Any motor swap in these yotas will require a ton of wiring/rewiring if you don't want every single dash light on and you want it to run like it's factory.

At the very least, if you factor in your time and all the random small parts, you're looking at $4k is my guess at the very least. When you can get the supercharger for $6k and get some actual power.

People that do these type of swaps, they lift the body completely off the frame to get enough room to work, and it takes months with tons of prior planning.

It doesn't work like that. The 3UZ would be making more torque at 5600 rpm. The ratings are already its peak HP. I don't have my truck in front of me but if it did rev to 5600rpm the torque would be dropping off due to inefficiency which is why it's peak HP isn't there.

The 3UZ has a smaller bore and stroke. It's designed to rev higher. The horsepower would probably be in the cams and the other parts that go into the package. Does the 3UZ have variable cams on the intake and exhaust? I'm pretty sure the 2UZ only has it on the intake.

HP is torque*rpm/5252
 
My question would be "Whats the overall goal here"? You keep referring to the higher rev range numbers. Are you looking for top end? If so, I think you should reassess your platform. The 2UZ is built for low end power, almost immediately giving all available power made by the engine within the first 2000 RPMs. Personally, I'll take the 2UZ's cast iron block for the durability alone over that 3UZ's aluminum block... this was designed for the pavement.
 
I literally was thinking "shoot, the 3UZ makes more power, its a Toyota V8 similar to the 2UZ, why wouldn't it work?" I actually priced out a good running 3UZ from a wrecked SC430 at one point for my Tacoma and the dude wanted $800. IF (and thats a big if) one could swap the 2UZ out for a 3UZ and get more power out of it, for not much out of pocket, why not? I understand the 3UZ would have more top end power but I'm sure its no dog at lower RPM, the A750 is geared lower than the A650 that normally bolts to the 3UZ so how much would really be lost? A weekend to swap a motor in with more top end power and close to the same bottom end and its lighter than the 2UZ to boot? I would certainly entertain it as an option.

I merely presented the question to spark a discussion is all :shrug: All the information given has been very helpful! I don't plan to do this swap after learning its more in depth than a straight motor swap but maybe, just maybe, someone might read the thread and think "Yeah, I can do that and I will do that." And who knows? At some point a 3UZ swap could be the popular mod anyone can do in a weekend after blowing up their 2UZ? We never know but the possibility is there if the right person is doing the work.

It could be as popular as the solid axle swap "you want to cut out perfectly good independent suspension and replace it with an old straight axle? Thats a lot of work, you're crazy." Maybe someday :clap2:

Is that URD supercharger CARB compliant? Highly doubt it. Whilst living in Commiefornia one must obey silly CA Smog laws :sad: Guarantee if I lived outside of CA, my Tacoma would get an LS1, I wouldn't even skip a beat :dance:

This is the route I plan on going. Just hope URD will still have it available when I do go through with it.
