4.10 gears and e locker

Hi there fellow 4th gen owners,

I've owned my 4th gen for about two weeks now and just got finished with a swap that some people might be interested in. My 07 V6 received 255-75-17 tires and from previous experience I knew I wanted slightly lower gearing to make up for the increased tire size. After having done so, I'm very happy with the combo.

I ended up just slightly lower geared than stock; with 265-65-17's and stock gears I was turning about 1750 rpm at 60mph, and with the 255-75-17/4.10 combo I am at about 1950 rpm at the same 60mph (indicated). I haven't yet used a gps to see if my speedo is accurate. The 4.10 gearing seems to be a good fit for the tire size, and in my case were done very cheaply utilizing a second gen tacoma front diff (4cyl, 5 speed) and a first gen trd tacoma rear third member (4.10 gears and an e locker). The housing needed to be modified but that's not terribly hard (and well documented elsewhere).

The only tricky part for me was that the first gen tacoma 3rd member utilizes a smaller drive shaft flange bolt pattern than my 4th gen 4runner did. I happened to have a yoke off of an 80 series land cruiser front driveshaft that has the same bolt pattern and accepted a stock replacement u joint, so I was able to swap this yoke onto the rear of my driveshaft and still have all commonly available, and OE toyota parts. I would imagine the small pattern driveshaft yoke is fairly common among other toyota models, but I don't know for sure yet.

Just wanted to share some info in case other folks were looking to do a similar swap.

That's pretty cool, I love big changes that happen to use OEM parts. And since you've already swapped in a Tacoma front diff, you're halfway to an FJ transfer case swap!

Got any pictures showing the size differences of the yoke between the 3 trucks? parts numbers? and what source did you use for modifying your diff housing to accept the 3rd member.
All things im looking to do in the future, so id like to see where a recent successful modification got there info.

The tacoma front diff uses the same actuator as my stock 4runner did, plug and play swap, so I'm not sure how it would work with the FJ t case swap. Admittedly, I'm ignorant to the FJ t case swap, is it done just to gain a manual shifted unit?

Sorry, no pics at the moment. I'll take one that shows the difference in flanges and get it uploaded. I am going to look into buying a triple drilled flange from an aftermarket source and see if i can find one that's drilled for the 4th gen 4runner bolt pattern, but will fit a first gen tacoma e locker third. If such a thing exists, there would be no swapping of the driveshaft flange, which would be even easier.

If you source a 1st gen tacoma/3rd gen 4runner rear third, it's fairly obvious. I also don't have a PN, as it was a part I have a few of laying around, though with some digging through parts break downs, it shouldn't be that hard to find a PN.

As far as modifying the diff, there wasn't one single source I used other than what was right in front of me. I purchased a gasket for the tacoma 3rd member and once you place it on your rear axle housing, its clear where you need to drill/tap holes and modify the housing to clear the shift fork.

Retrofit Electric Locker

Some quick googling produced this, I didn't read through it all, but it has some pictures that might help you visualize what's needed. Its worth noting that my rear axle housing didn't require and welding to build up low spots.

Yeah, I guess on a V6 that's all it would gain, and I suppose it should be obvious that the diff would have the same actuator...I was thinking about what's needed when swapping it into a V8, where you need the front diff with an actuator, and you get the awesome benefit of not only manual shift but also 2wd fun.
