400,000 mile '98 4Runner Tune-Up

Hello all. I have a 1998 Toyota 4Runner 4cyl 5 speed. The car has 401,000 miles on it, and still has the original clutch. I'm about to do a clutch job on it, and I was wondering what else I should replace while I have it all apart. It has some oil leakage, and I was looking for some suggestions on seals to replace. Just a little service history: the oil and filter have been changed very regularly the whole life of the car, it's gotten a new radiator because of a wreck, new alternator, and an AC compressor and condenser. Other than that, hardly anything has been replaced/ serviced other than belts and what not. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Rear main seal, clutch slave cylinder, oil in the diffs, transmission and tcase, grease everything underneath that you can, shifter seat and bushing since the shifter's already gonna be out, possibly the starter if you're having any troubles with it since it'll be out already. That's about it that's related to the underside of the truck.

Haha you're well beyond any service schedule at this point. I'm not sure if many can give tips on what starts to fail at 401k miles!

Yea your looking good buddy. At this point I would just fix things as they come. replace the seals that are leaking if you want but no need to fix something thats still working.

I see the 4cyl has a timing chain, not sure how long they are supposed to last?

I hope i can get that far!!

There's no interval for replacement on the timing chain, highest I've heard reported is 660K+ on the original

Do a compression test just as a checkup to see how well that engine is doing after 400k. Otherwise, I would chase down that oil leak and do a thorough tune-up including oxygen sensors. How is the exterior of the vehicle?

why so he can be worried about his low numbers. No reason. Just keep her going and dont worry till its time to worry. LOL

Keep doing what you're doing? :shrug: To be on the original clutch must be nearly 100% highway miles.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I just want to keep her running for as long as I can. Lots of sentimental value. It has been driven mostly highway for most of its life so that definitely helps. The exterior is in pretty good shape. Still the original paint and it still looks pretty good. I've been in two wrecks with her though, so the front end looks pretty rough. Just didn't have the cash to fix it back to where it was. Good enough though. Still runs great.

To be the old ball joint broken record, I see no mention of their having been done....that may fall under your what-not category.

I'm 120,000 behind you and the main fluid maintenance (difs, brake, ps, tranny, t-case, clutch hydraulics, coolant, fuel filter, grease), rubber bits from cv boots to hood cushions to all sorts of bushings including front lower and both rear control arms, rack and pinion and o-rings like the little one on the dipstick tube plus all of the typical wearable suspension and steering components have been replaced to avoid failure based on miles and wear and damage that would happen if they did fail (like ball joints ).

Again, that stuff might hit your what-not group. Hope I'm in your boat someday.

I'm actually forgot about the ball joints. How could I forget that? I had one fail on me while I was driving. Luckily I was going over a speed bump... Replaced both of them after that. My parents, the previous owners, weren't big on preventative maintenance, so I'm trying to catch up. haha
