Hi All,

Looking to get rid of the trash JVC I have in my runner. I can get a reasonably good deal on a 4400NEX - but the Crutchfield website says it doesn't fit, however, the lower model 2400NEX does. Isn't a double DIN a double DIN? Anyone have any experience with this?

I can comment that the 4100NEX fits with no problem. No expert on such things, but I imagine you should be fine...

No, there's not just one size double-DIN; there's 2 (or more?).

I may be off on the sizes slightly, but I think there's a 6" and a 7" double DIN, and the 3rd Gen has the 6". So without trimming the bezel, only a 6" stereo will fit. On the 4th Gen, as well as most (all?) Toyotas designed after 2000, the stock size is a 7".

You can install a 6" stereo in a newer 7" slot and then get 'wings' like these to fill the gap:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011QPWMHG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That 4400NEX says that it's 7", so that'd be too big for the 3rd Gen unless you want to cut up your bezel a little.

I have a Pioneer AVIC-8200NEX that claims to have a 7" screen and it fit with no trimming. Depth is something to consider too. The newer version of that model would not have fit because it was deeper than the 8200.

OK, see that's my confusion with the sizes, hence my hesitation to say them exactly.

I know for a fact that the 1st Gen Sequoia and 2nd Gen Rav4 stereos are too large to fit the 3rd Gen 4Runner, and that there's an 'ear bracket kit' to fit smaller double-DINS (like the 3rd Gen 4Runner's) in those cars. I believe the 4th Gen 4Runner takes the exact same larger stereo.
But I've seen some aftermarket stereos fit flush in those too, so there's obviously a wider standard size available.

I guess the main confusion is that aftermarket stereos apparently often aren't completely accurate in their size listings, most especially when you get a Chinese 'eBay special'.
May or may not fit, just buy what you like and hope they have a good return policy if it doesn't fit.

Thanks dudes.

I went with the 1500NEX instead. I guess I'll have to live with less than state-of-the-art in my 21 year old Toyota. Oh NO.

Anyway, appreciate the education.

Should have gone with the 8200. Has just about everything!
