4Hi not working.

Difflock

New member
Im stumped with this, and need some guidance, heres the issue explained.

96 SR5 3.4 5speed elocker with j shift

4low works great, diff lock works great. 4wd dash indicator light comes on

4hi doesn’t work, light comes on.

I have researched this extensively.

I assume because the indicator light comes on in both positions that my tcase position sensors work fine, add works fine and vsv works because 4low works

So my question is; what could cause 4hi not to engage, but the light does. Keep in mind that 4low works perfectly fine.

Any info is greatly appreciated

What do you mean by 4Low works? It is a mechanical shift for the gearing portion of the transfer case - if the lever moves to the right position, it WILL be in Low Range. Do you get binding in corners like it is 4WD in Low?

Have you gotten under the truck to make sure the front driveshaft is there? What other things have you looked at/checked?

Why do you think your 4wd isn't working?

Its electronically controlled with the vsv. 4 low works fine yes

I shift into 4hi and my front drive shaft doesnt spin, only in 4L.

Have you tried turning the driveshaft by hand when in 4HI and 4LO? Like Phattyduck said the vsv/add controls the front differential engaging. Being in high or low doesn't change that.

You aren't really answering the questions we are asking...

First, we know that the gearing will change when you are in 4Lo. Does the drivetrain bind 'correctly' like it is 4WD in Low Range?

Do you hear the ADD VSV click on and off when moving the TC shifter between 2WD and 4WD? (in the passenger footwell)

There is no change in the 2WD/4WD shift rail once you move the shift lever to the 'right' - from there it is actuating the Hi/Lo shift rail. If the front prop shaft isn't locked to the transfer case in 4Hi, it shouldn't change when you shift to 4Lo.

AH, something is wrong with my T case. My shifter wont stay in the 4 hi position. It seems to act as neutral, the only two positions I can have my t case shifter in is 2H and 4Low, what would case this? Broken linkage?

I would get all 4 tires off the ground and see whats actully happening. you may be shifting into 4L and 4H but the front end isnt acuating and locking the front axle.

That would be a vacume issue on the 96 I think.

Theres only one Vsv though, that controls both 4l and 4hi, so if 4low works shouldnt 4hi? Is my undersranding

VSV only controls the front differential engagement. If the front differential is engaged in 4LO then your front differential is functioning as it should. Your problem is likely in the transfer case itself with your 2wd/4wd shift fork

It appears like my Tcase "Physically has no 4Hi position" When I pull down from 2H to where 4Hi should be, my lever doesnt hold there and falls to the right, underneath neutral. Just learned this from getting buddy to send me a picture of his j case in 4H

It sounds like there is something wrong with the shifter "linkage" within the transfer case. You could try removing the little leather boot and cover to see if there is something obvious that is keeping it from going into 4H.

If it's something inside the transfer case, you'll need to pull it and see if you can find a manual on how to tear it down and inspect it. Thankfully, these transfer cases are pretty common and cheap to come by if you need one (or at least they are here in the states).

This is my t case linkage, nothing looks off to me?

Whats this springy thing? Its bent though

So I removed that bent spring thing, reinstalled my knob and now my front driveshaft is locked when my tcase is in the 4hi position! However my dash light doesnt come on.

What is this spring thing? And do I need it? When I pulled the boot, it was just sitting in there....

That spring tensions the shifter towards the '2WD/4WD' side of the shift pattern. It should be in there. The shift lever rides up and down on the flat section of spring in the middle. Look at the orientation in the pic below.

Generally, you don't want to remove the cover for the shift lever. The 'correct' way to remove the shift lever is to pull the c-clip and leave the housing in place.

Of course, since you are looking to fix whatever is messed up below, you needed to remove that cap - but getting the lever in correctly is easier once the cap is in place. Also consider getting a new shift seat for the 4WD shifter, it is probably disintegrated (it is gone in the picture above, about to get replaced).

Id assume to stop from bumping the shifter out of 4hi and into neutral accidentally? In the picture mine is pretty bent, would you suggest just leaving it out for the time being while a get a new one? I looked online for quite a while, I could not find a part number on that spring anywhere, you wouldn’t have a part number would you?
