4Runner in snow

Drove the 4runner for the first time I the deep stuff yesterday. About 10" and it was very impressive. Noticeably better than my 2012 X5.
Also had a first chance to test out 4lo and diff lock. I had thought that the hype surrounding diff lock was just that, hype, but it really made a big difference. It was the only way I could climb up onto my lawn over the curb in about 8" of snow.
It's my wife's dd and as much as I want to get her something more modern I really do like this truck.

You gotta realize you'll get comments like that. Of course your BMW sucks in the snow.

The lockers biggest benefit is when you are three wheeling it. Instead of the tire off the ground spinning it'll still pull you out. It does work in snow though when one tire is on ice.

They are awesome in the snow! Word of caution though, these trucks can get squirrel-y pretty easily if the road is slick (I think it's because of the narrow, long wheel base)... just FYI since it's your first time in the rig with wintery conditions. Have fun!!!

Also, the X5 is no 4Runner, but they are sweet vehicles. Just different end-goals

I'm in northern Bergen county so unfortunately the harshest conditions it sees is a few inches of snow although I just put some new A/T tires on so it handles it with ease.
I'm considering a more modern car primarily for safety reasons. With my wife carting around 2 kids it would be nice to have something unibody with stability control, curtain airbags, high strength steel and the like.

Not to say that those aren't all very good upgrades as far as safety concerns, but if you look into it you might be surprised how well 4runners can handle a hit and keep passengers safe. Being a 20 year old guy I didn't even think about safety when I bought it but a lot of threads have popped up where people total their truck yet walk away. Even multiple rollovers. Just food for thought, I know it shocked me how safe they really are despite lacking the things in your afore mentioned post.

I just had some fun a couple of days ago too. Even though my drive terrain and suspension is stock, they can go through quite a bit. I would absolutely love locking diffs, and maybe a lift.

I have a vacation home in the Pocono Mts of PA. Earlier this week 2 of my buddies and I decided to run up on Friday night, go out and have a few beers and then get in some skiing on Saturday morning. As the week progressed we heard rumors of the Friday into Saturday snowstorm and decided to go anyway. I really wanted to try out my 4 Runner in some deeper snow but also, why not ski on fresh snow?

We drove up Friday night after work. It wasn't snowing when we left but as soon as we went through the Lehigh Valley Tunnel we hit snow. I drove up to my house via the back way which is basically using back mountain roads to wind my way up the mountain to my house, and my 4 Runner was fantastic.

After we got to the house and unpacked we decided to head out for a few cold ones. It was snowing pretty hard by then and again my 4 Runner was awesome. Much better in the snow than my old 94 Wrangler, plus it's about 1000 times more comfortable.

Saturday morning we were up early to get breakfast and then hit the slopes and again no issues at all. We had about 10-12" of snow in the Pocono's and the 4 Runner never had a problem. What a fantastic truck. My buddy liked it so much he's now talking about getting rid of his F-150 and getting a 4 Runner.

My 02 4 Runner Sport only has 85,000 miles and knowing that these truck are good for 300K, I'm imagining I will drive it until the wheels fall off.
