In the new Consumers Reports magazine they list the 4runner as the second most reliable midsize SUV. Only the Kia Sorento beat it. The Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge journey and Nissan Pathfinder are at the bottom. Consumers Reports still does not recommend the 4runner as in the past.

I saw that last night when mine came in the mailbox. I'm guessing it's not recommended due to the fact it rides and handles like a truck (most others in the catagory are unibody) and the others probably get better gas mileage. They also do a road test (not off-road test lol) so I assume the nose dive and body roll also fall into items they see other vehicles not doing.

I've read CR for years, and I based my purchase off of the reliability ratings, maintenance and repair records (it's a Toyota). I want 4 wheel drive and I want it to drive like a truck.

I think this just reinforces what we already know. (Well most of us anyway, where was that guy claiming Jeep quality is good now?)

As to why they don't recommend it, well I'm sure folks have more than the BOF theories based on past comments.

Jeep quality has gotten better since my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It went from REALLY SH*TY to just SH*TY. Huge improvement :) I was NOT the guy in question BTW.

I use CR for things that can be objectively tested, like batteries, or dishwashers, with measurable (data) results.

What I do not use CR for are reviews that are subjectively reviewed. Those commies would have us all driving a Prius.
 
I wouldn't even recommend CR to anyone shopping for a new car. Look at what they did to Suzuki and Isuzu. Same with the 3rd gen Montero. Their 5th gen review finished it off.

The worst vehicle I have ever owned, and I once drove a Chevy Vega, was a Jeep. A 1995 Jeep GC, what a piece of crap, no need to stir your morning coffee, just start the Jeep, put the cup in the holder. That 4.0 vibrated like a concrete mixer. Had the engine changed at 17,000 under warranty.

Toyota reliability is legendary, cannot beat it, the testers don't like it for the reason we do, truck frame, body on frame, 4WD and because it is built like a tank, it can feel like that to the Gucci shoe wearing testers.

Lastly, I would never trust CR, never.

I'm from the thought that all so called independent reporters.
I.e.
Consumer reports
JD power..
The list Goes on and on .......

Give awards and accolades to the highest bidder.
For example the latest batch of Chevy commercials..
GM has gone to complete shit! But Jd gives there cars all kinds of praises.
The new Malibu is a fleet car at my work, and it's a complete pile of shit.
