4runner stalls after water fording? Ideas?

I have a curious problem... motor runs just fine all the time, however, after fording streams, puddles etc, possibly half as deep as the tires with some speed, the motor will hesitate, sometime stall. Usually after cranking the motor and a bit of fuel/revs, it clears right out and runs just fine after 5-10 seconds. Full set of skids underneath.

Any ideas as to cause? It's a bit hard to troubleshoot... Water never hits the intake.

Get a hose and start spaying stuff bit by bit to see what causes the problem.

For me it was bare wires on the O2 sensor that didn't like being wet.

I would think electrical as well. Maybe loose/corroded ground wire.....

What type of air intake do you have? It could be water getting in the intake. My Saturn with water injection acts like you describe at times

I had a real issue with water in my 4th gen, turns out one of the coil packs was loose and water got between it and the spark plug. I sucked the water out put a whole new set of plugs in and ran a fuel additive, seafoam, and she ran like new.

You have a Saturn with water injection? A Sky?

What type of air intake do you have? It could be water getting in the intake. My Saturn with water injection acts like you describe at times

It's a 2002 S series. I did it to mess around and decarbon the top end. It does seem to be worth 1-2mpg.

OEM intake... as I said though, no water is ever ingested (air box is dry, and its temporary...)

O2 sensor could be a culprit? Any other ideas? Water never gets to the top of the engine - it's all down low.
