4runner, stopped moving while driving. SOS!

I have a 2002 4runner and while driving it the other day I slowed down to let someone over and when I tried to keep driving the car wouldn't move. Not even in reverse. After a while I managed to get it into a car repair place that was right next to the road. The guy said it was most likely the transmission and then offered to buy it off of me for his 15 year old son. After it sits for a while it will move a little in reverse but thats about it. I guess I am hoping to find some magic fix or advice even though I'm almost certain it doesn't exist haha. SOS!

I can't offer mechanical advice, but I would argue that if the mechanic offered to buy it for his son, he's thinking it's a cheap fix and will flip the car for a profit.

But then again, I could be wrong. I'd get a second opinion.

Make sure all fluids are properly maintained and regularly checked.

Yet another unprofessional mechanic. When will it ever end.

1st thing I would do is have it towed out of his shop. But before that have a look at the transmission fluid (before starting Look at the transmission fluid for the "pink Milkshake" Then start it and warm it up and check the fluid level. Might just be low on fluid.

Like the others have already stated, get it the hell out of that shop. The dude is hoping you are uninformed and will sell it for cheap because he's saying it needs a transmission and it will be expensive.

Do an internet search and find a shop that gets good reviews and tow it to them to get an opinion of what needs to be done.

Could be pink milkshake, others have stated similar issues.

Could just be low on trans fluid, or it could be shredded. But I agree that the guy who offered to buy it shouldn't be trusted at this point. If you don't have your own mechanic you can trust, ask friends and family who they go to. Have the truck towed there.
