4Runner vs Grand Cherokee

Caught my eye that member paid 6k for a 2000 4Runner in what looks to be excellent condition with 132K. I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited in excellent condition with 95k. I am the second owner, and it has been a great vehicle, reliable, great tow vehicle, nice looking. Terrible seats and beginning to rust prompted me to move on. It is valued in the 6K range (maybe a little more), and it strikes me how the Toyotas hold their value. Just got my new 2014 SR5 after 14 years of JGC's and I love it. Saved three grand from a comparable new Jeep, so off to a good start already. Expect great reliability and value and love the ride.

Hallelujah, another man cured of the Heep plague!

Just so you know your 2014 Runner is a 5th gen and this is the 3rd gen board. You are more than welcome to hang out, make friends and post here but your threads related to your 2014 will probably be moved and the 5th gen guys will offer you more help should you ever need it.

Welcome to the boards.

I don't see too many Jeep Cherokees with 200k+ miles on them. Most pick and pulls I visit have an entire row or rows dedicated just to them. That said, they aren't too bad but definitely have many more problems after 100k miles on them than any 4runner I have encountered with the same mileage. The I-6 in the Cherokee was a good engine. I am curious to see how the JGC with the Ecodiesel in it works for the long term.

Enjoy your new 5th gen 4runner.

What is this Grand Cherokee you speak of? But on a serious note, My only real experience with one was my son's mother had one a few years ago and with 120K on it it was a rattle trap. Great motor & drive train, but my 15 year old 4Runner still rides like new(almost) with very minimal rattles & noises for a truck with 210K miles on it. Can't beat a 4Runner in my book!

I own both until last wednesday night when someone ran a light and totaled the 4Runner.........

The JGC is a 2004 V8 and the 4Runner is a 1996 my SIG........

I prefer the jeep for everything but the gas milage........My wife loved her Toy we are getting another.

I keep asking her what she likes about the Toy and try and compare it to the Jeep and she just says she likes the looks and always wanted one.

What difference I notice is the ride is night and day. The Toy feels worse than my Cummins... ride wise. In any amount of snow if the Toy isnt in 4wd its arse is all over the place. The Jeep is a snowmobile with rubber tires and it isn't even the Quadra-Drive model. Of which My mother in law has a 2004 Limited with the QD drive line and its.... well its awsome.....(no words come to mind) I care more about snow with the toy or the WJ than off roading. I spend enough time off roading my cummins getting firewood. (its spent more time in Low range crawling over rocks with a full bed of Oak than I care to think about)

The Toyota Powertrain, Both engine and trans, is proven to me..... we bought our 4Runner with 255,000 miles on it because it was the better option over a 180,000 miles 2000 Grand Cherokee V8 with QD. All though the Jeep had zero rust under neath, and on the toy I spent two 5 day off stretches sandblasting and painting the frame and real axle and repairing a rust hole in the frame at the trans cross member. (the jeep had mud color coolant and a noise turning sharp in the front axle and seller would not budge on their price so I picked the toy knowing it needed shocks all around and tires and a timing belt kit)

I do know that the next 4Runner with any rust on the frame I'm poking it with a awl or ice pick........

The only two things my wife use to complain about on the 4Runner was getting in and out of it and the harsh ride...The factory radio sucks compared to the jeep too. The radio is an easy fix.(though the jeeps steering wheel controls are very nice)

In my area the 1999-2004 model grand cherokees are scarse to not there at all in the pick n pulls.......and the 3rd gen 4Runners are just as scarse......the 4Runners of the 3rd gen all had or have over 250k miles on them and frame rust is why they ended up in the bone yard in the first place. (I took the instrument clusters out of two of them, sunroof, bla bla bla)

exactly, same here. If you do see one with a ton of miles, it's more than likely on it's 2nd or 3rd trans and possibly the same for the motor, unless it's a 4.0L I6, those are tanks.

that has to be a difference in tires. There is no reason why the 4runner would be all over the place and the part time grand cherokee would be more stable.

Like that you can appreciate both of these great machines. Jeep wouldn't have the cache it does without great combination of American know how, and passion for them. Again, happy I made the switch, though. What the hell is a "pick and pull"?

Welcome to the fold!

I had a friend on the coast who had a JGC, and yes it was nice and comfy to ride in but he had it in the shop a fair bit. The V8 was hard on gas... not as bad as my Suburban though.....
We have JGC up here, in some numbers, but there are way more 4Runners, Pathfinders, and Santa Fe's.... on the used market the 4Runners command the highest prices. As these trucks aren't impervious to rust, out East is particularly hard on them. As most 2nd gens, even here, are generally rust buckets (along with most Pathfinders), it's probably next to impossible to find one out East in decent shape.

Here in British Columbia-- Vancouver, Kelowna, Kamloops, I've only been able to find 1 3rd Gen 4Runner at the pick and pull in 2.5 yrs!! "Pick and Pull" is a wrecking yard that allows customers to "pull" there own parts and usually has a ridiculously low price on them! (ie. $125 tranny, $175 engine, I pulled front struts for my sons Mazda for $80 both including some TB housing and an alternator..)
I've talked to a few wreckers and they tell me the 4runner writeoffs go straight to Insurance recovery due to the high value of these trucks. To buy a 3rd gen, at the moment, they'll go for $5k(96) to $10k(2002), in decent shape. In excellent shape -- what someone is willing to pay! Luckily, rust isn't the biggest problem here, but East of the Rockies, its probably the biggest issue(according to the posts here!) As you can tell, I'm pretty much stuck on Toyotas....My Corolla is rolling over 250K....my 4Runner 230K....

You'll have to let us know how you get on with your new 4Runner, as I've never been in one but I hear they're pretty darn nice!

some are... like even the 3rd gens had the multi-mode Tcase... basically an AWD + 4hi/lo -the best of both worlds

Yep, the 247 XFR case in the GC isn't really a AWD case. It's RWD until a difference in speed between the front and rear driveshafts happens. There is a hydraulic pump connected between the two drive shafts. Any difference in speed between the two it starts creating hydraulic pressure and when it happens it front driveshaft is couples to the rear.

The 242 case in the GC's is similar in operation to the Toyota multi mode case.

I'd dare to say that the GC my sister had was better in the snow than my 4runner. It handled well with little rust underneath when she sold it.

But the amount of stuff that had to be replaced on it, with repairs coming frequently after 100k miles, wore a hole in her wallet for parts and put blisters on my knuckles.

IMG_1616 (1024x768).jpg The GC is the wife's ( her folks gave it to her before we were married, so what can you do ? ) LittleCaesar I completely agree with you. With both in 4 wheel drive the GC handles in snow and ice better but once it got around 100K it started falling apart. It's too bad because it's a good design. Solid front axle, strait 6 or V8 engine, good overall size, limited slip front & rear axles, usable cup holders. All with poor build quality.
